help needed with local knowledge pls - TomGroggin/Geehi area

hey guys currently in canberra and heading off tomorrow working our way through kosciuszko NP  Im looking at stopping in around Tom groggin Camping area for a couple of night before heading to jindabyne i was hoping for any links that anyone might have or a pic of what to expect, im not sure if this is the best place for us to stop but over the couple of days camping there i was imagining visiting the mount and maybe doing a bush walk if sunny or a drive up one of the tracks. the forecast isnt that great for the next few days with some showers or storms
any suggestion would be great pls

Tom Groggin is a good camping ground, only has a eco toilet though, no showers, use the river water for a wash.

At the far end of the camp ground is the track to the river crossing (marked 4WD ONLY) if you decide to go for a drive, left out of the crossing is Davies High Plain tr, right takes you to Tom Groggin Hut (Dogsmans Hut) Mt Pinibar and Tom Groggin Tracks, be carefull if it's rainning or signs of rain though, as they can be slippery.

If you're going from Canberra down to there, you'll probably be going via Cooma and Jindabyne rather than the long way round.

As you go along the Alpine way between Jindabyne and Thredbo you will pass Thredbo Diggings and Ngarigo camping areas.  Both of these are on the river.  Depending on what you want to do, that might make things like day walks from Thredbo a bit more convenient.  You can  take the chairlift up the hill, and walk to the Kossie (or the lookout) from there.   If the weather is poor, there are cafe's in Thredbo and the kids (big or small) can try the slide thingy or the pool.  You might want to go into Perisher and cHarlottes pAss while you are in the area, for the view of the main range and just plain curiosity.  I generally walk to Kossie from this end as I find it an easier walk, but it is prettier (and busier) from Thredbo.

At any rate, you could drop in and check things out on your way past, and either stop then or continue on to Tom Groggin or Geehi.

Make sure you take the Bushman's.  The horse flys are huge down by the rivers, but it keeps them at bay very effectively.  Weather really does change quickly in the mountains and it is several degrees colder and often windy up top, so take warm clothing even if it seems unnecessary.

As suggested, likely you'll go through Jindabyne to Tom Groggin or Geehi. Both are magic spots to pull up for a few days. No showers, but the drop loos are fine.

If you were to take another route you could head from Canberra to Wee Jasper then across to Tumut, Cabramurra and then reach Geehi and Tom Groggin, but it would be a long day as the roads are steep and windy when you're towing a camper.

It doesn't take long to reach Thredbo from Jindabyne, but then once you've crossed the range the road down to those camps is steep and windy. No problem, but you would get tired of doing it daily.

There is heaps to do in that area, huts, drives, lookouts, swimming, fishing, cooking, eating, a drnk or two if you're so inclined.

If you don't need access to the drop loos, there is a track just past the Tom Groggin turn off (~20-50m) that leads down to a beautiful spot on the river that you'd likely have all to yourselves. There are many other spots just past here along the river also.

Closest shops are Thredbo or Khancoban for fuel and food supplies.

I can't recommend the area highly enough.

thanks guys for replys its a lovely day here in canberra same the forecast is for rain rain and a bit more rain over next few days the plan is to travel via tumut to a place called talbingo caravan park im assuming this will take us all morning and sum staying in a cabin to give mum a rest for a night hoping to drop into the hot springs down the road in arvo. heading towards tom groggin from here which should make for a more realistic trip was originally planning on stopping at three dam camp ground for a night but with rain around dont want to pack up daily in it so we will head futhure on and set up for a couple of days im really looking forward to chilling out by a creek its been something im searching for all trip so hopefully sun shines on me. plus its more birthday soon.

GG i had a flick through your trip report and looks great hopefully if weather holds we will get to experience a slice of this kids just love exploring.
