Cape York Trailers Closed down???
« on: January 13, 2012, 02:15:15 PM »
G'day all
Has anyone heard if Cape York Trailers has closed down?Called into Reddan St
in Cairns where their workshop is and it's cleared out.Nil stock in yard and no one
answering phones. They had a great product.

I tried looking for their web site a few days ago and couldn't find anything.
I've looked at it previously, so I know they had one.

Hope they've just moved. I like the look of their campers (but only ever seen pics).

They did make great campers but my dealings with them when looking to buy a camper a while ago was not pleasant.

Bloody Chinese products !!! I am only joking

I think your right  :'( , I've been looking for their web site for a while now but both Ahern Metal Industries and Cape York Campers are gone from the net ( they are one in the same ). I have one of their campers and have to say their one of the best/strongest built and well thought out campers you can buy, but have heard a number of issues with dealing with the owners. Very sad if their gone, ...........another one bites the dust I guess.

Maybe my camper just went up in value  ;D ,

We now own classics mate   :cup:  , just like you and me. Kulkyne may still have some stock but once their gone we had better chain ours up for safe keeping. Looks like another ''China Victim'', sad days  :'(  and I bet they won't be the last.

It is sad to see another camper manufacture leave the industry.
But around $40,000 for a camper trailer is a lot money. You could buy a brand new sv6 commodore for that money and you get a motor, gear box, air conditioning etc and Australian made.
I think the problem is that their is more competition around and people can't justify spending that kind of money on a camper. ( this is only my view) .
I am not knocking their product but I think this is the problem

$40K might sound like a lot for a hard floor camper, but when you see a number of soft floor campers up around the $25-$30K mark then they are pretty good value. It all depends on how you use it and how long you want to keep it for. I wouldn't pull any of the cheap ones down the canning, up the cape or across the anne beadall, yeah they may make it one way but how can we be sure it will make it back home, atleast with a good quality camper you can have that assurance. But if you don't want to do these types of trips then the cheap ones will be ok and I suppose thats what most will do, but when I sell our cape york camper, I know I will be passing on a camper that will still do the bigger trips and come back home and continue to do them for quite a while.

If you go to the big caravan/camping shows there are people lined up to buy the AORC's and KK's and they are around the $50k mark, so there is still plenty of money floating around out there. Just out of curiosity I just did an online quote on KK's site and a camper that is comparable to ours is approx $45K. After looking at these couple of sites I reckon my missus and I need to have a good chat about taking our camper off the market, do a few more mods to it to make it easier for me (I am in a wheelchair) and keep it for a while longer.

Cheers

Greg

Your spot on with the pricing comparisons Greg, before the Cape York site disappeared the replacement cost of our camper was about $47000, given that we paid $29000 in 05 for ours brand new I can't see us ever selling it, ( well not until the two sons start pinching it for their own use )  ;D   I think this year may be a tough year for a number of camper manufacturers, time will tell.

jk, mate I just don't see myself paying that sort of money to replace what we have now, considering the mods I have done to it over the past few years....Looks like I might have just made my decision about pulling it off the market, just have to wait to have a chat with the missus tonight!!

Yeah I think you might be right about some of them struggling. There are just too many manufacturers out there for them all to be making money. There is still money floating around for the bigger players but the little guys who can't offer some decent deals will probably fall. Lets hope not because it is good for the consumer to be able to pick and chose...

jk,

Mate I just pulled the camper from the market. We are going to do some more mods to it and keep it for a while and see what happens later on. I have ordered some spare bits from Cape York that may be needed in the future that they only make, so I will stick them in the shed for now. Now just have to plan on using the camper a bit more.

I think its a bit like the woolies/coles issue in that they are selling these things at bargain basement prices to knock out the competition and when they do they will just jack up their prices. But to get these cheap prices either they have to cut corners with quality or the suppliers of their components are getting screwed.

Just got the gossip on Cape York.

Ted is downsizing due to (I suppose) the Chinese invasion.
He has moved the canvas work to the Tablelands, and is moving into a smaller shed.

Sooo, he is still in business, Yippee for when I sell my re-engineered Chinese project and opt for a hard floor  ;D

That's good news, glad to hear that he's still fighting the good fight and hanging in there. It would be a shame to see one of Australia's most robust campers disappear for ever. Have they down sized Ahern Metal Industries or Cape York Campers or both  ??? , met Ted in 09 when we did the Myswag Cape Trip and grabbed a couple of spares, was only too keen to supply us with the bits we needed and gave us the info on the new model.

Here's hoping he can continue to produce the high quality product we all know and love.  :cup:

I hope he has just down sized and not closed down
We brought a cape york extreme from the factory September last year
Ted was great to deal with in person and nothing was to much trouble
He seemed to have a few on order and a new one was approx three month delivery
I agree they are a great bit of equipment and should last quite a while if looked after
