Footwear suitable for hiking through water???
« on: January 06, 2012, 08:16:32 AM »
Morning everyone.
Just wondering what you all wear when hiking and have to go through water.
Looking for something that would have some slip resistance to them as well for rocky crossings.
Usually just have joggers and socks on but don't like having to wade through water in them. Looking for something maybe to slip into for the crossing and then back into the joggers or is there something out there which would cover all terrains.
That's what I need - All Terrain shoes!!!  hahaha
Have a great day guys.

You could also look for a pair of sea shoes. Made from wet suit material. Anaconda sell them in their swimming section. They are fairly inexpensive.

I got mine when I worked for the government.... and so now retired I tend to wear my "Taipan" brand boots.  They are lace up to a bit above the ankles, waterproof and have soles which withstand up to 300 degrees celcius....and have good grip.  They are also reasonably light.  If the water is deeper than my boots are high.... I have to take them off.  Carry a pair of those wetsuit type boots in your pack.
Cheers

I dont have any problem, I dont wear any boots/shoes at all when I am not at work, so bare foot works for me.

Hi,
a couple of garbags will get you across a knee deep river with dry feet, even if you put a few cuts in the bottom doing so.

cheers

Use these as socks if you don't wish to get your favourite "hiking joggers" wet.

Another vote for Keens  ;D I wear mine all the time. Once worn in they are so comfy
Not so good in sand though. But for walking through water there great. No stubbed toes on that hidden rock!

I don't hike, but I do surf. These might be good for you to try. They have sure protected my feet from being cut to shreds a few times.

I just use the oniell reactors at the bottom. They are light roll up to nothing and they are strong.

I have had my Keens for about 7 years and for walking thru rivers and over rocks etc they are the best. I also have some Crocs that i love and are fantastic for general camping etc with the back strap flipped up, with the heal strap down still very good in water etc. Both are great. Based on price tho the $50 Crocs are hard to beat.

Any hiking boot or trail runner that is Goretex lined should keep the feet dry. I've got a pair of North Face trail runners which are Goretex lined -they keep my feet dry & have great soles
cheers

Yep! Dunlop Volleys are the go. Canvas top that dries out real quick and a sole that will grip to almost anything. Have used these successfully myself on many occassions. Big-W has them on special at the moment for around $18
Also, Don't use those "Crocs" they are very slippery when wet, i know because i had a very nasty incident while wearing a pair on a wet surface.

Cheers

Those look something like Hi-tech Ninja shoes (tabi) that I saw the guys who fought Shintaro the Samurai wearing in the 60's on the afternoon TV series when I came home from school.

They look so amazing that I want a pair. But ....what are they actually designed to do?

A good pair of scuba diving boots.
the ones you use when using slide in fins. They cover up to your ankles as well for more protection. Slide on and zip up.
They are made of wet suit material and have a hard sole.
Any pro-dive/scuba diving shop sells them.
