Beware another scam
« on: December 11, 2011, 01:53:32 PM »
Hi Folks
I am selling a camper trailer via this site, I received this email (below) from a guy called Grant Johnson who uses the email address of grantjohn2001@yahoo.com it rings of a scam to me. What are your views folks. Has anyone had dealings with this bloke before.

The below email was after a couple of innocent emails asking if I still had it, and how much it is,

Best regards
Banglabill
Hi,
I will be needing your email with PayPal for the payment, once payment has been completed,i will have it picked up by an international shipping company as i am having it shipped abroad and they have liaisons with local AU companies in every suburb so getting to you shouldn't be a problem
Regards
Grant..

Sounds like a scam.  You could tell him what method of payment you will accept (perhaps bank chq cleared before pick up of trailer or cash on pick up) just incase it isn't a scam.
Please keep in mind - I'm just some guy.  I don't know nothin about nothin!

i don't even do that, i've found if someone is genuinely interested, then they ring you first and don't bother with a text message at all. every text message i got when selling my caravan was from a scammer (never a question asked, just wanting to buy it without seeing it).

I can't see a problem with sending him your email address.  Do you have a PayPal account?  It is a pretty secure way of buying and selling things, and is a requirement on eBay these days.

Remind him that you want him to pay the seller fee if he pays via PayPal.

Just the line - "I will be having it picked up by an international shipping company" tells you that it is a scam.

He may tell you that he has deposited the funds into your account - but wait he accidentally put in too much so you need to refund him the difference.

Or - I have sent through the money and included in that is the shipping fee, which you will then need to pay the shipping company and here are their details...

Ignore the e-mail or ask him his phone number to have a further chat about it - I bet he won't reply - he's probably on an offshore oil rig somewhere that doesn't have reception!!

Just email him back saying you will only take direct deposit or cash in hand, bet you'll never hear from him again.
Same thing happened when Hubby advertised our trailer, it was only after he set up a paypal account and gave him details that he said he was on an oil rig or something, that was when I told Hubby to forget it, tell him direct deposit or cash on delivery only (he did stipulate in the ad that he could deliver to Perth) so yeah. God I hate the scammers, they can start out sounding rather genuine these days too...asking for more photos first!

Exactly Lost & D4D.
THIS type of scam - or so close, it's not funny - has been reported & talked about in so many different places & media now, that ppl shouldn't still be scratching their head wondering if it's legit or not!
The fact that the a-holes are still trying it on tells me that ppl are still falling for it, the exact reason I never feel sorry for ppl who get ripped off...they deserve it!
A fool & his money...is a saying for a reason!

As for paypal...ebay owns it...secure be buggered.
Personally know ppl who've been bitten - hard - via paypal. Wasn't there a topic on here not long ago as well?

I'm not sure how the scam works.   Do they ask you to release the goods before the money is cleared?   Why would anyone do that?

one way is they attempt to get you to pay for stuff first and add ti to the cost of the car
google gets you trillions of hits on this one these days... baffled how anyone falls for it anymore

"What happened was after I sent him my pay pal details he then says "ohh, really sorry, can you please pay the transport const of the car through Western Union Money Transfers because I am still at sea and I can't pay it, but I will add it to the purchase price of the car...

After this, I then asked him for the details of the Transport Company, he responded, and said the company was "123 People" which for those who are quick on google know that this is another search engine, similar to the yellow pages. The address he gave me was the address for a hotel in england. Not hard to work out it was a scam..."

We had the same deal when selling our caravan on ebay. he was buying it for his father and was getting shipping company to pick it up. Even offered $400 dollars more to get it straight away! but also said he wanted our ebay account details to deposit money. Wife had already heard of the scam where they get people excited and they give to much paypal info and then they deposit the money, take the item then retrieve there money back. Makes you wonder how many people think there doing the right thing then bam, they get shafted.

Just mention you have a mate who works for the Australian Federal Police helping you with the sale/purchase. Usually works for me in sorting genuine and scammers.
