Help me choose from 3 tyres.
« on: December 03, 2011, 08:36:29 PM »
I 'm getting to that stage on trading the wheels on Prado 150 gx  245/70r17, I'm looking at a/t tyres and looking at getting either BFG, Mickey's or Bridgestone. A mate of mine told me to go for Bridgestone D694 because of the price. I do love BFG all-terrain, had a good run on them on the hilux.
Think I will have to change size pattern to 265/65r17. My driving is 60% black stuff and 40% gravel with some beach. Looking at doing a drip up north of wa nxt year and have been told to stay away from original prado wheel. Any help and advice?

Want to try and push 80000km + comfortably. I find coopers and BFG to be very similar.

I'm with you Teabag. After our last set of MTZ's we are now the proud owners of a new set of ATZ 4 rib. They look great, have the most aggressive tread for an AT tyre and I'm a fan of their side wall protection system which is patented. After Three sets of Mt tyres (1 ATZ 5 ribb, 2 MTZ and not one puncture I reckon that's good stuff. The new set are 2 weeks old so time will tell.

What is the price difference in them all?? That may assist you a lot. Some can be $50-100ea tyre different.

They are just about all on par.. those with each will love them.. there are bad and good stories about every tyre.
BFG AT is 20yr old tech and pattern.
Mickeys are reasonably new and have a great following.

In my searching for a new set of offroad tyres I've seen the Coopers A/T3, next week I'm looking at Continental AT's, need something strong for my trip from down the far South/West tip, direct through the red centre up to the far North/East tip, Cape York trip in June 2012.

Up until the recent Cape York Trip (June 2011), I was running BFG A/T on a Gu Patrol.  We had just hit 70,000 km. Before we hit the Cape, I put new BFG Muddies on and put the A/T on the CT with 2 x spares, they still had plenty of tread left.  They are a great set of tyres and well worth thed money.

We usually use BFG ATs, but at times are hard to come by without a few months wait.  Are currently wearing the 694s which are fine on the black stuff and gravel, but turn to slicks in an instance on mud.  Have not had any luck with Coopers on 2 different Hiluxes with 2 different treads, and neither ever drove straight.  Have fun making the decision, and to add to the mix tyre sizing!

i have bridge d694 light trucks on my prado 90 series and love them, wearing great, handle great and good off road thus far....  done a lot of towing with them too....  researched for a long time and these seemed best, price was just a bonus  ;D   ive only had mine in the mud a couple of times but had no problems with them... although in saying that they didnt perform great on a slippery wet clay topped road, if i had gone to the effort and dropped the tyre pressure a bit i would have probably had a better time  ;D
The perfect campsite IS out there.........

I've got BFG A/t on my 120 series Prado and haven't had a problem with them. Done about 70k on them but they're not finished yet. I'm about to chuck them on the camper and get a new set for the tug. Price up here in Kununurra WA is $385 fitted.
265/70r17 (just as an aside, going from a 65 to 70 profile made my speedo read correct)
Most people around here seem to use BFG Muddies but I think I'll stick to the all terrains for travelling with.
Oh and this set have taken me on the Holland track, up the Canning Stock Route, across the Gibb River road, up to the Mitchell Plateau, all through the Gascoyne and Murchison and Pilbara with only one puncture(pallet nail). So yes I'm happy with them.

Wat he said, ive had BFG AT's and they were great 80000k plus wear, also ran 694's on my Patrol 50000k wear and plenty left, but of those 2 for an AT tyre not all that aggresive without going to a muddy.

Ive just changed to a MT 4 rib ATZ, based on being a bit more aggresive in pattern without being a muddy, plus all of the great feedback on them, IMO, i discounted the cooper tyre based on feedback, at the end of the day there is heaps to choice from and your budget will most likely be the governing factor.

Good luck with your choice.

Swanny.

I use the Micky Thompson FC II
Aggressive tread for an all terrain
Not cheap though... About $370 for a 265/70/17.

Cooper st maxx I run on the lux . I would have to say they are the most aggressive a/t tyre on the market followed by the dick cepek fc-2 . The st maxx is awesome in the mud and even better on the sand @ 23 psi on the beach there is no stopping a 2.5t lux but at $400 ea (265/70/17) there expensive but they are a bloody good tyre and produce next to no noise on the rd
in a trackabout you can track about

Plus 2 for Teabag.
MT 4 ribs in 265/70-17. 3 months old and going great so far. Low road noise for such an aggressive tread pattern but above 60kmh the noise disappears.
I got a sweater for Xmas, really wanted a moaner or screamer.

Unless you are changing your rims the GX rims will only take the 245. 70 17.
I have been looking at Yokohamas Geo10 for mine,
Micky only make a 5 rib ATZ and I am unsure of the BFG although General grabber is the same looking boot.
Coopers make one and so do a few others. Getting them is the hardest part.

Hey Crisp,
I have been told that 265/65r17 will not be an issue to fit our GX 150.
