VW Amarok broke after just 63 days in Africa
« on: November 28, 2011, 12:31:25 PM »
I dont know if I am allowed to do this, but I read a post on another forum I am a member of and thought it might make for some good reading and interesting comments from you guys.

http://www.4x4community.co.za/forum/showthread.php?t=100205

One of the 'test teams' in South Africa got their hands on the VW Amarok and after 63 days they had to replace the valves and top.

Not a good start.

It could be a one off, and if it aint their car Im sure I'd flog the arsehole out of it too!

It can happen, Robin on here had one of the first couple of 4.8 GU's in AU, and the engine exploded with <1000klms on it. cant remember what it was, crank or rods or something, but wasnt pretty.

That doesn't look like a vw service center
Good luck with the next warranty claim :)

The work car I used to have set a record of less than 50m...the transmission crapped itself as I was pulling out of the dealers driveway. Holden reliability = 0

Ask 4WD M staff how many test rentals got handed back on trailers or via panel beaters and insurance companies.

I had 7 of 10 holden colarado's go in for major warranty claims, all before 10K kms.

These vehicles were used in extremely harsh conditions. Lucky we only kept them for 12 months.

At least Holden is consistent

Sorry, my bad guys. I only now realised that the guys were writing in Afrikaans on the link I provided to the other 4x4 forum.

It goes something like this:

The Amarok's fan belt broke. Pieces of the fan belt fell into the timing belt enclosure. This then bent the valves.
VW South Africa flew an expert out (cause it happened in a small remote town) who took the part with and also to do a report on what happened.

So the guy you see in the photo is indeed a VW technician, but he is definitely not in a VW service centre (not with all the Landy's and Cruisers in the back ground)

The guy removing the head had the "VW" emblem on his overalls so may be it could be, just a bit different to what we are used to here in Aussie  ;D

All that damage because of a broken fan belt. Bugger!

Yeah.... I think that is what the whole concern is about. Small thing like that and you are left stranded wherever you are.

A bloke I know of has lost 3 power windows and the handbrake locked on and wouldn't come off. Vehicle is a few weeks old. I guess like most vehicles the early models might not be the ones to buy. Might be better off waiting for the bugs to iron out. These are 4WDs after all, not $15K mini cars!

Well said Pat , as a rule I will always buy the 2nd model . Usually the bugs have been sorted by then , if your lucky .
