The Kimberly next year
« on: November 17, 2011, 09:08:42 PM »
Maybe a strange thread to start at this time of the year but it's already been the wetest Month at the Gibb River Station for many years, they say we are in for a big and long wet. I was out and about last week (but for got the camera  :'() and there was a lot of water around.

Anyway. My point and the reason for the thread is think hard about where and what you are going to do up this way next year. I will use this thread to post details and pics of the wet as I fly out to stations and communities and let you know, when I can, when roads and areas are likely to be open.

I think you should all keep an eye on this as last year due to the very late wet and the road issues lots were put out especially when the Bow river flooded and the roads out of Broom East were closed for a Month.

You the man Steve.
My bro is planning a trip next year and is just getting his stuff together for the trip. Tempted to fly in & tag along with him for a couple of weeks. Furthest I have been is to Kunnunara back in '80 in an old HQ wagon. Every morning it was a case of fixing something on the old beast.
It must be an amazing job you have. Hows it going by the way?

I will watch with interest as we are planning 6 weeks up there next year. We missed out on seeing alot of gibb river road attractions in 2010 because of late wet.

Will be most grateful for updates as I plan to leave Perth, heading north, in mid-May 2012, including the GRR.
Cheers, Tony

So far so good. Making staff changes at the moment to better service the remote locations. We get to fly into these areas with the doctors who support the communities so it's been busy as every one has some thing they want and we have a few new buildings going up along the Tananmai. Bit of a bummer though if you fly in and then there is a medical evac and they leave you behind :'(.  Got lots to do around the satellite coms stuff as there are some old setups that just won;t support the apps we need to run so it's faster this, faster that. It's been fun so far though.
Cheers

Hi Steve ,

I am one who is very interested in this , as we are planning on visiting the Kimberley in ' 12 .

We hope to get there in late June . But due to school holiday commitments , we only have 3 weeks to see it .

I can hear everyone saying " you need more than that " , and yes I know .
We always need more time !    But we'll do our best .

I was going to email you early in the New Year anyway to pick your brain . Hope that will be ok with you .

Cheers ,
Darryl.

Hi Steve,
We will be vey interested, we are planning on leaving the north coast of NSW first week in July for 13 weeks, we hope to see you and other myswaggers. Thank you so much for your posts, I read them all and I often show your photos to my year 5/6 class as I am trying to get them interested in our country. at the moment they are creating a tourist brochure for their favourite part of this country. one group of boys are planning a trip to the Kimberley in 6 years. It is a bit of a giggle listening to them but at least they are learning something

It's always great to meet swaggers and as your also from NSW (we are from the Blue Mountains - Springwood) it makes it even better.

Steve

It is a great time of year to be here so you should be right. I'll update as the year goes on so hopefully you can get an idea of what it's like during the wet. Once you have your plans in place hopefully you'll have time for a beer in Broome.

Thanks Steve.  Will really appreciate the info. We will be doing the GRR in July for 3 or 4 weeks on the first big trip for the new Flamingo.  No set itinerary and we only have a short drive from Hedland.

   We are spending some time this year up the Peninsular at out of the way spots, a bit of investigating we hope. With ours jobs we get invited to not so known places and some are invite only but were not sure which ones will be. Once we work that out I'll post up some detail for the Swaggers only so you may get to spend some time where others can't go for who ever wants - will let all know.
