Disgusted at 4wd store (but sometimes it's just the staff)
« on: November 16, 2011, 09:28:03 PM »
Once again it christmas time and i get the question what do you want for a present.

Being into camping and 4x4ing like most of us we ask our wives for gifts of this nature.

This years a winch was on the cards and also some recovery hooks for my xrox bar so off to Opposite lock in Brookvale she goes.
The winch was the VRS http://www.oppositelock.com.au/index.php?action=prodcatalogue&form_name=view_product&category_id=1232&product_id=9475&pageID=10079&sectionID=10062 with an RRP on their website of $1045.00 But the best price they give her a quote for was $1050.00 WTF ??? apparently the RRP was $1195.00

Then the recover hooks
http://www.oppositelock.com.au/index.php?action=prodcatalogue&form_name=view_product&category_id=86&product_id=2871&pageID=10079&sectionID=10062 advertised for $14.90 she bought these and paid $48.00 for 2 of them WTF  ???again these will be going back >:D >:D

This makes me so angry as this is not the first time this has occurred a few years ago it was ARB at artarmon that sold her a Hand winch that she order in and when collecting it didn't come with a box or instruction so she decided to change stores this year.

It makes it impossible for our loved ones to buy gifts for us without being ripped off

A little off topic but being an ex retail manager always have printouts from the Internet.

A lot of stores do not know what is on special them selves due to the large amount of advertising. As we all use the internet to source prices retailers are slow to counter act their competition.

An example: I bought an iPad2 just recently from the Good Guys at $538.00 being told that this is the lowest they can go. 2 days later Wow had them for $499.00. I went back and showed the Good Guys the catalogue and they were stunned saying that is too low etc... They matched the price and refunded the difference due to their price guarantee.

Sorry back to the topic.

I have used Mannell in the past they did my lift on my old patrol and yes I was happy

only issue I have and this is not really a bad thing but they only stock the best gear and for some gear I just want medioca like a winch I just can't justify the cost of a warn when I have a hand winch as backup

G'day Oldblade,

Yep this sucks alright and i know how you feel......... a few years back now we were living in Charters Towers...... we had been into Townsville for a days shopping, and while were in there I priced a set of tyres for my old Hilux (our only family car at the time)..... anyway the tyres i priced were BFG AT's...... i didn't have the money at the time, so took the blokes business card, with the tyre type and price written on it............. anyway a few weeks later the Mrs was back in T'ville, and knowing i wanted the tyres thought she would suprise me by getting them......... The Mrs went back to the store with the card he'd given us, said she wanted these tyres etc........ and the bloke told her, he didn't have that exact tyre, but had another brand in identical tread etc, the wife understandibly didn't know what type of tyre i wanted, and ended up paying for this pr*ck to fit a set of 4 Kumho Road Tourers and extra for new Sunraysia Rims......... the Mrs drove around in T'ville for the day on the new tyres then drove 120klms home, to give me the suprise........ I honestly didn't know what to feel, pissed off at this pr*ck for ripping us off, sorry for my Mrs for being taken advantage of while trying to do the right thing....... or just generally dismayed at how low some bastards can be............

Another vote for Mannell Motors, they have done work on the Prado, was in there this week and picked up a couple of ARB camping chairs (a bit more expensive than most... but really comfortable), and at a price better than anywhere in Sydney....

Hi oldblade,
That does reaaly sux.
I can't believe a mob like ARB would pull a stunt like that.
I'll tell ya, some businesses customer service is crap at times.

I use to work in Hardware, Trade sales. The mob put out their catalogs once a month as usual.
A lady that was renovating her place that had been in many times, questioned me on the price of the Porta Mouldings in the catalog.
2.4 meters of decorative Tassie Oak trim.
Yep it stated $1.50 Each.
She crabbed nearly $2500.00 worth for about $180.
She knew her rights and I knew she was right.
My manager tried to ripped me a new one over it.
The proof reader had stuffed up, yet it was MY fault for the sale.

As mentioned, if you can print out or have a copy of the advertised price. you then have a leg to stand on.
Word of mouth is a very powerful tool.

Cheers for sharing.

Isn't that the online store price not the retail store price which is cheaper as they come straight from the factory?

That's why most catalogues have E&OA, errors and omissions apply, get out of jail clause.

I dont buy the argument that the staff dont know what the bosses are planning as a way to justify ripping people off (price disparity) the specials I have listed were placed on the board for staff to read, ok I am a small business compared to a chain of stores but the principal is the same, if you choose to list something at a price different to normal you ensure that that price is displayed in the staff room so all your staff read it.  If they choose not to then you need to retrain them so they do.

Often though they will give you the online price if you bring in a printout from their website.

You do know that you still don't have to sell the goods to them if there is a misprint, even if E&EO is not on the catalogue.

Hi oldblade,
Most retailers that have a online store will have "cheaper" advertised prices than that which they have in actual stores....if they have one that is! There are a number of things to remember; the store/shop front is costly, the staff wages are more costly than warehouse staff and freight to the store is included in the store price. Buying online is not always cheaper and the case quoted here and as someone has pointed out freight has to be added to that online price. So the price quoted and given by the store in my opinion was very fair and reasonable.
Remember if we don't support the small businesses (store fronts) then it won't be long till we looking around and there won't be any........ sorry but I'm a small business operator (not 4x4 gear though) and I KNOW how tough to make a liven it is out there!! And the online stores are certainly making it even harder!

I think most people get ripped off because they are a soft touch.  If they were to offer me a different product at a different price to what I actually required, I say "No thanks.  Bye", I don't say, "okay" and fork over the money.

I know what I want and how much I'm prepared to pay.  If I don't, then I research it so that I do.  Even though I have boobs, I am prepared to use the Big Words to show that I might actually know a thing or two about what I want and I'm not such a push over (I used to work in the hardware and timber industry and can translate thingamabob into product ... left handed hammer my buns!!)

My grandmother had a saying that applies today:  A fool and his money are soon parted.

Best way to get back at them is to shop elsewhere and tell everyone about it..........
Gotta love this site for that.

In another post 'lost' asked about an ebay seller.
Loads of people vouched for them and I reckon they made a few sales out of it.
I know I was one of them.
Good news travels. Not as fast as bad, but if someone gives you good service let them know and tell people.

I run a business purely off word of mouth. No advertising, website or anything but still have plenty of work.
Good customers are invaluable..

Shop elsewhere and when you find someone good, tell everyone.

Cheers

P.S. I use foursport in Dural for servicing and ARB Artarmon for gear and have had great service from both for over 10 years.
