Camping with others etiquette
« on: November 15, 2011, 10:09:02 AM »
This may seem a silly question, but I thought I'd put it out there anyway.

This weekend, we're going camping with some friends. We've been camping lots but usually on our own and if with others, has always been on the bikes where we organise who's taking what to cut down on loads on the bikes. This is the first time where it feels like we can take the whole house and have lots of room! Is there anything you would expect of others you are going away with?
They don't have a CT, though are very experienced campers. We are all very considerate people, so I know that common sense things are a no brainer ;)

I'm a good packer, so I'm not concerned about how much we take, though this is our first camp with both kids (2 under 2 will make for a lot of washing when we get home methinks ;) ). I expect pretty much everything to be in the trailer as the Jack will be full of us + dog. The question is more about things to do/not do (if any).

Setup camp and enjoy yourself.. you can ask 'do you need help takin anything'.... wont hurt..

Nothing is different to before, you have a trailer instead of a tent.

I would have thought that the etiquette would be to look after yourself and if anything is needed then it would be politely asked for.  If they don't contact you prior to the trip just take what you normally would for yourselves.

Being experienced campers I am sure they know what to take and what to leave at home.

I'd discuss mealtime planning with them, if you are all going to cook together then no point having two gas stoves, two gas bottles, etc.

Something I've always found when going away with other families is that they may need something (extra tarp in wet weather, a can opener) but you might too. So having that discussion beforehand is always worthwhile.

And speaking of the extra tarp, I alway have additional tarp/s, ropes, pegs and poles, you never know whether you are going to need to jury rig a sun/wind/rain shelter, or just set something up for some additional privacy.

Taking lots of firewood and alcohol will ensure that if you do need to lean on your friends they will be happy to help out in return for some of your hospitality :)

This is what I do though if you plan to cook and eat together it won't hurt to plan meals and requirements. Only exception is one mate who brings pretty much everything he owns with him so if he's travelling with me, especially when I take the CT, I tell him to leave all of his cutlery and cooking gear at home and he can leave his tent as well if he wants to sleep under the trailer canvas. Cuts him down to only about 6 bags of stuff for a weekend.

When we go away with our friends we always take our own food and cook and eat at our own site.  We will have one dinner together and that is always worked out before we go who is taking what (usually a baked dinner). With kids its better that they only eat from your supply, if you are forever sharing food you are forever at the shops stocking up!!!!  Other than that go with the flow and you will have a great time....   :angel:

A big thing i reckon is if you can't control your dog, tie it up or dont take it camping. I had a bad experience recently with someone elses dog whilst camping with them. Things like biting, going into other camps and taking food and barking at everyone who walks past, its rude especially when there are kids around. Its a no brainer really but some people it seems just dont care.

Don't walk around naked in front of the other campers without gaining permission first.  And if you do get permission, take a towel around with you, as some people get rather weird when you sit your naked R's on their chair.  Don't know why though.

Don't drink all their beer without offering up some of yours.

Don't wake me up at sparrow fart unless it's a very beautiful sparrow fart and you are bearing coffee.

If you use something, clean it before you return it and ensure you do actually return it.

Don't play the Doof Doof ... leave it at home.

Probably a good idea to leave the dog at home, whilst we may love our own dogs they can cause a lot of angst around the camp.

When we go camping, we generally have happy hour together.  Around 5pm.  We may start each of our cooking during that time and try to have each of our meals finishing around the same time.  Sometimes we may eat at the same table and then most times we may eat at our own tables.  Then generally after meals, showers we would come together around the campfire and have a few nightcaps together and then go to bed.

We have at times shared one BBQ for breakfast if both cooking bacon and eggs etc.

I reckon camping rituals with groups evolve.  With each trip with other people you start to build traditions, and work these things out as you go.  We all have different ideas of camping and how we like to relax, if yours doesnt blend with theirs, you both soon work it out and you don't tend to camp together again.
A couple of points of etiquitte for me would be;
Respect other peoples sleeping time, dont leave your rubbish around the fire,

When camping with friends on weekend trips we've generally allocated a meal for each family to purchase.  This could be a campoven wet dish one night, roast another and there has to be the mandatory breakfast fry up at least once.  Lunches look after yourself.  All BYO drinks.

Our camping friends mostly have kids of the same age so are sympathetic to kids getting up early and a midnight baby feed.  The couple that don't have kids park the camper further away, so they can sleep in a little .... I think they're practicing  ;D

Other camping items ; Our group seems to have a good spread of equipment so where one of our group has a generator, another a BBQ hotplate, another will load the camper up with water so all the kids can go through the sheep dip.  We normally have a pre camping catchup to discuss what's needed fro the trip ... as this is a good excuse for the blokes to have a beer and talk crap.

Also we have 2 rules;

1. Do what you want as long as it doesn't interfere with others

2. Throw away the rulebook.

We are the same as Leigh.  We agree on who does what meal and enjoy the communal aspect of the trip.
