Tough New GX Land Cruiser 200 Released
« on: November 11, 2011, 03:35:44 PM »
Saw this on Caravan and Camping Sales today:

http://www.caravancampingsales.com.au/news/2011/toyota/tough-gx-landcruiser-released-27540

It starts with: Toyota has released a cut-price, bush-ready version of its iconic 4WD aimed at those who work or play on the land.

Should be $50K not $80K, you're still paying luxury car tax on it

I'm pretty sure it is cloth seats and vinyl floor. It wouldn't cost that much for a trimmer to fit carpet. A cheaper option if you need more towing capacity for a big van.

Personally I too think $77k is waaaaaay to high.

But compared to paying $67k for a 76 series 4 door it's probably good value seeing that the majority of the 76 is from parts first designed for release in the 80s.

I reckon that out of all teh Toyota range they would make the most profit off the 70 series

All Toyota's are over priced, and people seem to pay it.

"prestige" or something.

They are primarily for the mining and govt sector.

And they will sell by the bucket load.

The mines fleet managers have been travelling oz picking up second hand base 100 series landcruisers but these are now very thin on the ground.

I went to bid on a low mileage ex raaf one in hobart and it was sold for way more than it was worth imo and the auctioneer said thats where they go.

Toyotas, until recently at least, are better built and more reliable than other similar brands because they have the money to sink into R and D.  Money that nissan doesnt have hence the fall in quality and use of inappropriate 'global' engines being fitted.  I know that will start a war but get over it.  If you want quality you pay.

Yes.  8)

It doesn't take long these days for threads to run off topic.

Evidence of that Dazzler? and not he said she said. And yes I have owned a few Toyotas but I bought new when I bought the GU and I couldn't justify the extra 20k for another Toyota.  8)

If you're buying at fleet price then the Toyota isn't that much more expensive.

I'll wade in.....

yep seems over priced, but if you want cubic inches, and aus wide availabily parts what are your other options? They kind of have a monopoly.  Having said that, next upgrade will be early next year for me, and I cant go past the patrol...

Looks like the 80 series gxl 1996 will be with me for a while yet.

Must be getting old if I think $77k + on road is expensive?

Yes.  8)

Been a diesel mechanic since 84 and around fleet since then, including a stint with the government motor garage outback fleet.

Compared to other makes Toyota rarely have issues.  Sure you will get the odd one but nothing consistent.

Why do you think the mines in the main run Landcruisers and Hilux?  Reliable, solid and resale beyond most other brands.

I couldnt justify an extra 20k just like you.  So I only ever buy second hand Toyota.  Its not an emotive thing, simply based on facts and experience.

Why do you think Toyota sell for a premium.  There is a silly argument that its based on perception not reality.  Once again mines and fleet buyers only give a rats about the bottom line.  Theres the evidence.

In 30yrs around fleet i have only ever heard one person say they wont buy Toyota again.

In no way am I bagging out any other brand which is what you are accused of whenever you raise this.  Toyota spend the $$ on R and D.  Nissan dont because they cant afford it and the 3.0l engine was a classic example.  The 4.2td wouldnt meet euro 3 emissions.  They couldnt afford to build a new one so they dropped the 3l in it.  I bet they would have loved to have the $$ to build a new one but they dont.

Hop in a 200series and then a Patrol.  Chalk and cheese.  The 200 really is worth the extra $$ just by how much better it is.  Now they have a stripped out version for the mines they will dominate the market again.

Maybe your experience has been different.

cheers

I'll tell you about my hilux, It was a 20c part that stopped me dead twice....One christmas eve, the other at easter fully loaded heading into the High Country, Both tow truck jobs. It was an 01 Hilux and it was serviced to the km.

I have driven 200 series Cruisers. One with a 24ft van swinging off the back for a leisurely 500km day trip down the Great Ocean Rd and back taking the most hilly and winding ways possible. I'd have one. Just not for the price tag.

When I bought my GU, 4.2's were obselete and they were 8k more than what I drove my 3.0l out of the showroom for and I had more accessoeries bolted on too. I had a choice of 4 4.2's that day and all had over over 90,000km on them.

I'm happy with mine its sitting in the driveway with just under 170k on the clock.

My best mate works in the Pilbara I'm sure he could tell how good the front ends of the Hilux go over there.

Cheers
Rich

I think I want change from my GX prado 150 now after seeing this new toy. My mate put a bet of $250 that I would not keep my prado for more than five years. If a second hand gx 200 series in dark grey colour comes my way it's mine. Don't get me wrong. I love the prado to bits but the 200 series is just that little bit better. I'll be an extra $250 out of pocket on top of the rest though.  ???

Im sure they will do unreal with the fleet side. I think they are ulgy compared to the GXL but a few grands price difference. Toyota has my vote, will be a 200 series owner in 2 years - cant wait!

The 200 Series GX "Poverty Pak" would be at the top of my list if I was looking to change 4bys at the moment.  It's a good size vehicle and has a nice powerful large capacity diesel to push it along.  The down side would be the purchase price and the independent front suspension (not a big issue).

I was hoping it would have arrived a little lower on the price list, but as someone said pulling the carpet out doesn't reduce the build costs that much.

Now that all the banter has settled down, what exactly does the "Poverty Pak" Cruiser miss out on that the up spec model has fitted?

Anyone got any real details, and probably a confirmation on that price.

Good to see that Toyota is finally including Airconditioning as standard.  They bloody well would want to on a 77k vehicle + onroads.  Could never fathom why they would not for so many years.  Just seemed like a major money grab and a slap in the face to the purchaser having to pay for the privilige of cold air whilst every other manufacturer ofered it standard.

So with e 77 K price tage what is it going to cost to put a BASE model cruiser onto the road after it is all said and done 90 K?

Cheers, Chris
