Alcohol on the Trip
« on: November 01, 2011, 09:53:40 PM »
We all know that there are restrictions at the Cape but the only restricted area we will be in will be Bamaga / Seisa.

The restrictions start aprox 10 klms from the ferry. Only one case of beer per vehicle.

Also they do not sell any bottled spirits as it's all cans for both beer and mixed drinks. If you have bottled spirits keep them in camp and you will be ok as you can walk around with a beer etc in the caravan park but not outside the park.

As we will be having a cocktail night bring your favorite mix for the occasion.

And even then at Seisa you can go around the block and buy another carton of beer. The rules are. You can only carry one carton in your car at a time. There are actually no rules that say you can not buy two, you then take the chance. we asked several managers while there and go the same reply. So. Buy one and take it home and put it in the camper then go get another one if you need which we did on our way out to Vriliya Point EG. As long as you hide it you will have no issues getting out of the Cape unless you are a moron and tie them down to the roof of the 4by.

And then we are going to hear about what constitutes a bonafide traveler when carrying booze through Bloomfield. Again common sense prevails. if you stop and break out the cans you may in dead get done. No one in years has had their car confiscated for having a few bottles of grog in the car along with a few cases. Again, hide it..

The same happens up here a lot. NO GROG signs. We take it in all the time. We do not sit there and drink it in plain site of every one. Please use common sense.

I'm just adding this Mark as in the build up for this year to many were scare mongering IMO and that's just not right. Sorry if I rocked your thread. Happy to remove if required

How many bottles of spirits can you take in one car? I make my own so I was thinking about 6-8 for the whole trip or is that to many for up there?  Rod....

You can put them in my car for safe keeping  >:D , and you can camp close to yogi, McGirr and me, we'll show you how to hide large amounts of the stuff  ;D .

Seriously.....I think they consider a bottle of spirits the same as a carton of beer, if their in the camper under the camping gear you won't have any problems.

The no bottle rule and only being able to buy cans, is that because of the risk of breaking the glass or the amount of alcohol that can be consumed? Can you take your own alcohol with you in plastic soft drink bottles?

Alcohol restrictions
The maximum amount of alcohol a person can have in the NPA is:

•2 litres of wine (unfortified) and 11.25 litres (1 x 30 can carton) of any strength beer
Or

•2 litres of wine (unfortified) and 9 litres (1 x 24 can carton) of premixed spirits of up to 5.5% alcohol/volume
This amount is per person on foot, or per vehicle, boat or aircraft regardless of the number of people in it.

It is an offence to drink in a public place.

However, the Loyalty Beach Camping Ground, New Mapoon and the Seisia Camping Ground are designated wet areas. Registered guests of these camping grounds are permitted to drink alcohol.

You can carry any amount you like in any bottles or cans but once we cross the Jardine the restrictions apply and all members will decide what they wish to carry.

Pm me for any other information as I do not wish people to think I am suggesting breaking the restrictions.

When we did the Cape years ago, talking to other campers it was common for Lemonade Soft Drink bottles to be filled with Vodka and Cranberry juice bottles to contain Red Wine.

They weren’t trying to take excessive amounts of grog in, they just didn’t want buy at the exorbitant prices the local shop was selling it for. I actually bought a carton of Gold cans from Thursday Island when we visited there on our day trip as it was considerably cheaper.

As said before as long as no one goes stupid and brings attention to themselves, you should be okay.

In all the years I have done the Cape I have never been pulled over but as mentioned don't do any thing stupid and you will be ok.

At the end of the day you will buy alcohol at the Cape and it will be expensive about $60 for 24 cans but you expect that as everything is freighted up by ship. Fuel was $1.95 a liter for petrol.

OK.. Go here and read for your selves. I know Mark has posted info on this before.. At the end of the day you will have to decide. The only place where carrying limits apply was after the Jardine. And as long as you can prove you are travelling through the other areas, Lochhardt etc then you will also be fine.

Mark

That's a LOT cheaper than $37 for 6 cans at Yulara (and 6 is the limit).........or $6/can over the bar at William Creek........

Doesn't seem too bad in comparison.

I forgot to mention any advice, assistance or help will cost you a beer or 5 during the trip. It's known as Cape Currency. So allow for that in doing your numbers on how many beers you need to take.

And different areas have different restrictions so do your homework. Coppers up there don't usually go looking for jobs as there's enough to do but don't bring attention to yourself and all should be fine.
