Birdsville Races 2012
« on: October 31, 2011, 08:29:39 PM »
Yeah, I know it's a little way off yet (31 August/1 September 2012), but are any My Swaggers vaguely thinking about going to the Birdsville Races next year? Hoping to drop over from WA.
Not suggesting a "meet" or anything formal, but it would be nice to put faces to forum names.
Cheers, Tony

Trying to get a group of mates together at the moment.

Interested to hear from anyone who has done this trip.

Have they towed the camper in or do they just tent or swag it??

Thanks for the reply Gunna.

I was more concerned about the amount of room required to set up the camper, I have read how busy it gets up there and was worried about finding a patch of dirt.

Its always busy, busy, busy race week when campared to the other 51 weeks of the year.

There is heaps of room, just depends on how far you can walk back to your camp pissed

It is nothing like the crowds you get at any free campsite within 2 hours or so of a major city on a long weekend.

Besides, if we get 1 or more persons than the regulars in the pub there is something to drink for, and some one else you can share BS with  ;D

I'm hoping to be there too. Leaving the camper at home and doing the Simpson from West to East.

Having never been, but always wanted to, what is the arsehat and thief ratio up there??

Is it safe to leave your car/camp etc and go out for the day??
The bloke next to us from Adelaide at Eastern Creek GP came back to find his complete campsite stolen the first year, dont wanna go through this...

Hi Lost. I must admit that this very matter recently occurrred to me. With about 6000 people there, the possibility of scumbags cannot be ignored. Then again, with only a couple of ways out of town, and not the best roads, they would have to get cracking!
And are there any trees out there suitable for a good lynching?
Cheers, Tony

Holy thread revival! Putting the finishing touches on the 4by before heading off in just over a week. Planning on getting to Birdsville the day before the races. If you see a white 60 series with 35" tyres and Tassie plates, that will be me - say hi!

Did the races 3 years ago  l think . Camped out of town in a prepaired site , the council sent a grader in to the Dimintina  river flats . Scratched out many areas  big enough for 6 to 8 CT sites  lots of room . When you get there fuel up & get water as the road house is a shambles with rigs of all types .
Camping out of town is the way to go so much more peaceful . A short walk to the main road there will be a bus to the race course for a gold coin to go to RFDS . The tourist bus bringing people to the races become local transport . So if you got the chance to go GO , if not make the chance & go .
Travel well prepaired for anything  & take your own Grog

Hi all, I finnish work on Friday 24th pack up Sat head of Sunday plan to be there about Wed not sure where I will camp yet. Looking at the website the caravan park for the race time is first in first served, but there is free camping along the river and the council puts out portable toilets. I want to be there a couple of days before the races and go out to Big Red and eyre creek for a play, this time without a ton on the back of the ute. I have taken two weeks off work so I do not have to leave straight after the races. Might even get to the dinosaur field that I had to defer in 2009. Maybe catch up with some of you.
Cheers
