Gettinmg Insurance from Shannons - how?
« on: October 25, 2011, 09:02:45 PM »
the thread freom LesnJules had me thinking about a conversation I had with Shannons a while ago, I was after a comprehensive quote for my Prado.
The fellow on the phone wouldn't give me a quote because the car was not unique or I was not in a club or something like that.
I was a bit miffed but if their service at claim time is great I wouldn't mind comparing with the current insurer.
I said "but I am a motoring enthusiast!"  (didnt' work)

So is that right? I must be in a club or something?
So what if Prado's are like belly buttons!
Would Shannon's look at myswaggers if we made an approach?

I have everything insured with Shannons...house and contents, third party green slips and both the cars.

But...I have a "Unique Car" and am in the NSW Chevrolet car club. So they're more than happy to insure me for all I have.

Sorry but I like the fact that they only insure people who have unique vehicles. (they're gonna love it when I tell them I have an FJ needing insurance! ;D) I don't think that a Prado is unique and I don't think being in a club like Myswag or a 4wd club should qualify either. I should think by car club, they would also mean a specific club like the Chevrolet Club, the 55/56/57 club or the Mustang Owners club...not just a 4wd club.

I am an insurance snob I guess in that regard but I like my insurer and I like that they stick to their guns when it comes to who they insure. I am sorry if that upsets your sense of fair but in the long term, you might actually do better elsewhere as I think you'd find that they're not so cheap for you. I am pretty sure you could do better elsewhere for your Prado.

Having been treated bloody awfully by NRMA insurance in the past (because of the Chevy, the rude sales girl practically telling me that my car was beneath them and "they didn't insure them anyway") I was more than happy to go to Shannons, who were more than happy to have me!

Not real helpful I know...but I figured I can speak from experience, seeing as I am a happy Shannon's insured...(and they probably love me as well because in my 9 or so years of being with them, I've never had to make a claim.)

I tried to get my bike insured through Shanons but was told "that we can only give you a policy if you're already a customer with a policy" so I say "so you need to already be a customer to become a customer?." the response was "yes". ???

I just went elsewhere...

I rang Shannons to get a quote for my decked out 105 series Cruiser. No dramas at all, did an online quote first, then rang them to explain all the extras and mods done.

They gave me a quote on my Nissan, but it was not cheap, he told me as it was so modified I had to pay the top price even though I had a rating one.

Same here for the Cruiser, the premium was so over the top for agreed replacement value of 25K, excess of $1800, I could of replaced it myself in 6 years if I were to put the money aside. I was told "why don't you do that"

Join a 4wd club and yes the premiums are over the top. I had my Audi insured with them and when somebody forgot to stop and shortened it I had no issue taking it to my repairer, who isn't cheap, and they paid out without a problem.

+1.

I had the bike insured with them. I can't remember any trouble - I think I just called up, asked for a quote and signed up. At the time the premium was significantly cheaper than my current insurer.

They DO have some "unique" requirements though, one being that a motorcycle needs to be garaged. Hence when we moved to our current place, they cancelled the cover.

Strange to hear other people having so much trouble with them.  ???

Good luck!

old thread I know but thought it was relevant.

Got a call from shannons today. Just checking in that I'm happy with the policy on another vehicle. I have the cruiser insured with someone else as the insure the missus car and the house etc is all tied in . But my exisiting cover is for a very cheap agreed value and they wont budge anymore. I told shannons that I wanted it agreed for $5k more than my existing other insurers policy and they said no worries. The premium difference is only $10.00 a month.

I have found them good to deal with.

might not be any different for me now, I have a Vero policy (also owned by Suncorp) but the difference with them was no premium penalty for going on monthly payments as it was with Suncorp.

Gettinmg Insurance from Shannons - how?

I had been with Suncorp for nearly 20 years... In the last 5 or so, premiums kept going up... 15-20%
When I asked them about it... They talked about floods and stuff... I said we didn't flood... Not in a flood area... Have had no claims... I live/ own the side of a hill... Their bottom line is not my problem...
Finally shopped around. Now have a variety of insurers, but one of them is Shannon's. They insured my Gu Patrol.. For far more than Suncorp would for far less... Despite being owned by Suncorp.
It is heavily modified, I was in a 4wd club when I first insured with them, but they did not ask me if I was.
In fact every time I have spoken to them about accessories, extras on the truck , they knew what I was talking about, to the point of having discussions on the merit of various brands.

However they also insure my wife's bog stock Corolla..

I did ask them why they are soo much cheaper if the parent company is Suncorp.. They said they run independently, they go by suburb... Few claims near me... So low premiums..
And as they are owned by Suncorp, I kept my rating 1 for life.
Only issue I have is they don't do Landlord insurance...
So if you live near me.... Please don't insure with Shannon's ...
If you insist... Please don't claim...  :)
If you live far from me... They are great!!! ;)

Have yet to hear of any insurance company being far better then any other, all smoke & mirrors.
Just keep paying and hope you don't need to claim because they will try to find a way not to pay.

I use Shannon's also. They insure my 80 series for an agreed value of $17k at a reasonable price! they also insure our stock every day drive. I haven't insured the house and contents with them yet.

I have had to claim twice on insurance. Once for our new 120 Prado that was smashed in the 2007 hail storms in Sydney. They were an absolute nightmare to deal with.

Once with Shannon's when the mother inlaw reversed out of her shed and into my Holden Adventra scraping the entire drivers side. Shannon's were fantastic. They just said pick any repairer you like in your area and take the car to them and we will do the rest. I did some research and took the car to the recommended repairer. They looked at the car took some pics and were pleased I was with Shannon's. I had a text message from Shannon's within the hour with approval to go ahead with the repair at my leisure.

I have been happy with them.

Had my GT and Prado insured with Shannons and the premium kept climbing, Ended up switching to LSV (Lumley Special Vehicles), much cheaper and have had some claims with them, no problems (Rating 1 for life). When I sold the GT and rang to advise of the sale of the GT, they said they would still insure the Prado, no issues. After I added the lift kit to the Prado they were the only company (after a premium renewal notice and a few phone calls to other companies to compare) not to jack up the premium for modifications. Once the mod was advised to other insurers, the premium nearly doubled.
Quite happy and will stay with them for now.
A mate in Bundy has/had (don't know) his house (and 4 GT's) insured with Shannons and the house was affected marginally with the floods last year. The house was 9 weeks old and he had nothing but grief from Shannons.
