It does in Tassie.

Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710a using Tapatalk
Dont know which Tassie your talking about but it aint this one. Maybe a little daylight left on a day or two of the year but there aint no sun up.
Having lived in WA (Kununurra) while they trialled DLS, it was fantastic. And everyone up there loved it.
Having been back to Kununurra last month, it is weird being daylight at 0430 in the morning but dark by 1730. It just aint right.

Just a bit of info I learned last year.

In the UK they have DLS. What got me is the sun rises at about 4am and sets about 10pm.  Took a little while to get used to.   ;D

Oh, and with the exception of WA, they are already 3 hours behind and need all the help they can get to catch up, the rest of the country should all be in the same time zone for nothing more than economic reasons.

DST is hell for anyone who lives above Rocky, especially if they have kids. It's the tropics
Happy to wake up naturally without an alarm and see the sun gone early evening so things can cool down faster at home

I don't see the problem.

You lot want it. You got it.

We don't want it. We don't got it.

You care.

We don't.

We win State of Origin every year.

You don't.

Obviously a positive correlation  there.

And the reason why xxxx and Bundy Rum taste sweeter up  here.

What they said!  Never seen a sunrise except after a long night drinking ... and don't want it any other way thanks.  Never gotten out of bed until the sun is way up as I don't really like Early Bird Worms ... much preferring Late Bird Steak.

Hi All
Love when this argument pops up :D.  My mother-in-law (Townsville) and I (Brisbane, Pro DST) have arguments on this subject every time it makes the news. So I did a little reseaching to find some facts ???.  Have a read of the info below i found i think you will find it interesting, I did.

According to the U.S. Naval Observatory, civil twilight is defined to begin in the morning, and to end in the evening when the center of the Sun is geometrically 6 degrees below the horizon. This is the limit at which twilight illumination is sufficient, under good weather conditions, for terrestrial objects to be clearly distinguished; at the beginning of morning civil twilight, or end of evening civil twilight, the horizon is clearly defined and the brightest stars are visible under good atmospheric conditions in the absence of moonlight or other illumination. In the morning before the beginning of civil twilight and in the evening after the end of civil twilight, artificial illumination is normally required to carry on ordinary outdoor activities. Complete darkness, however, ends sometime prior to the beginning of morning civil twilight and begins sometime after the end of evening civil twilight.
Sunrise and sunset conventionally refer to the times when the upper edge of the disk of the Sun is on the horizon, considered unobstructed relative to the location of interest. Atmospheric conditions are assumed to be average, and the location is in a level region on the Earth's surface.

(The following data taken from Geosciences Australia)

TOWNSVILLE   Lat=-19°15'00"  Long=+146°49'00"
TIMES OF CIVIL TWILIGHT
(for ideal horizon & meteorological conditions)
Time zone: +10.00 hours
01/12/2011  Rise 0502  Set 1901  Total daylight = 13hrs 59 min

BRISBANE-CITY   Lat=-27°28'00"  Long=+153°01'00"
TIMES OF CIVIL TWILIGHT
(for ideal horizon & meteorological conditions)
Time zone: +10.00 hours
01/12/2011  Rise 0419  Set 1855  Total daylight = 14 hrs 36 min

MELBOURNE   Lat=-37°49'00"  Long=+144°58'00"
TIMES OF CIVIL TWILIGHT
(for ideal horizon & meteorological conditions)
Time zone: +10.00 hours
01/12/2011  Rise 0421  Set 1956  Total daylight =  15 hrs 35 min

During the summer months (if there were no DST) places like Melbourne actually have more hours of daylight than (as in the examples) Townsville.
Yep I know what some are thinking, Melbourne doesn't have a dirty big range to the west of it, but the numbers are interesting just the same.

Cheers
Ken

P.s. So really the northern areas would benefit more from DST  8)

Well since we are putting facts into the mix (why spoil things?) lets look at the summer and winter soltices -

Summer and Winter for Townsville -

TOWNSVILLE   Lat=-19°15'00"  Long=+146°49'00"
TIMES OF CIVIL TWILIGHT
(for ideal horizon & meteorological conditions)
Time zone: +10.00 hours
22/12/2011  Rise 0508  Set 1914 14 hours, 6 minutes of daylight

TOWNSVILLE   Lat=-19°15'00"  Long=+146°49'00"
TIMES OF CIVIL TWILIGHT
(for ideal horizon & meteorological conditions)
Time zone: +10.00 hours
21/06/2011  Rise 0621  Set 1807 11 hours, 46 minutes of daylight

Net variation of 2 hours, 20 minutes.

Summer and Winter for Melbourne -

MELBOURNE   Lat=-37°50'00"  Long=+144°58'00"
TIMES OF CIVIL TWILIGHT
(for ideal horizon & meteorological conditions)
Time zone: +10.00 hours
22/12/2011  Rise 0423  Set 2013 15 hours, 50 minutes of daylight

MELBOURNE   Lat=-37°50'00"  Long=+144°58'00"
TIMES OF CIVIL TWILIGHT
(for ideal horizon & meteorological conditions)
Time zone: +10.00 hours
21/06/2011  Rise 0706  Set 1737 12 hours, 31 minutes of daylight

Net variation of 3 hours, 19 minutes.

It is because you don't get as much variation in the north is the reason why daylight saving is pointless.  If anything if you want to have it you would do the time shift in winter not summer in the southern states to get you out of bed earlier to use the remaining daylight in the afternoon.

Symon, you need a bex and a good lie down, in any case shouldn't you be at work keeping the Australian economy afloat, or perhaps talking about the sun being up at 10pm in the southern states..,or state, or perhaps an argument with Mainey over solar power.,..lmfao

I just like to have a dig at the MIL on this topic every chance I get  >:D (even thou I know she won't ever be on this forum).  Plus I was trying to rationalise why I come to be in the same situation as Watto  ???  Doh.  See if we had DLS i wouldn't have felt so bad getting woken up an hour earlier  >:(
I'll take that bex too n just go n reasure the cows they can keep giving milk on time  ;D ;D

We all need to remember that Queensland not having DLS time dates back to the premiership of Jon Bjelke Petersen. Joh believed that the sun shone out of his arse and he was not going to get up early for anyone.

Sounds like there's a lot of people out there that haven't tried to put kids to bed when it's still hot and light. :'(
Definitely worth the economic hardship the blast of hot air coming up from Mexico every now and then. (get a bit repetitive though)
Yep... sounds like they're still trying to make up for the last loss.  ;D

A crock of doo-doos in my experience.

As a kid in Melbourne, the eldest of 4, when mum put us to bed at 7:30 on a school night, it was to bed we went.  We didn't are argue because we knew we'd lose, and the consequences wouldn't be pleasurable.

What did we do? Why we went to sleep of course!
