Hi all

SWMBO and I are looking at "upgrading" our CT to something with brakes (the current one clocked in at 760kgs the other day - not fully loaded, and you guessed it, no brakes).

After a 12 foot tent with fully enclosed annex, basic kitchen, brakes, water tank...all the usuals.

Somewhere around the $8k mark. Doesn't need to be the best off-roader around (we stay mostly in parks just off the black stuff).

x2. We have just taken delivery of our TP Camper and it is fantastic. We got the Queenslander model (semi off road) for $5200 including electric brakes. Comes with a 1200mm toolbox on the drawbar, eye to eye suspension, new 15" wheels and tyres plus more. Great value product.

a good quality used Tambo, or any one of a dozen other brands... let someone else pay $13k...

yeah, i could, put the trailer also needs to get a new compliance plate...not sure what's involved there, or how much it'll cost me to get it done.

Not too much Baz. She doesn't have a kitchen, water tank etc, but I can survive without them.

It also has got splayed walls, where i'd like straight up and down walls, but I can also live with that. Otherwise, my current CT is OK, it's only 18 months old, and only been used a handful of times.

so fit up the brakes for <1k, and spend the rest on the kitchen and tank :)

We are going to replace our tent on our camper soon,  look at this option rather than a whole new camper, the re-compliance for brakes shouldn't be an issue, I'm pretty sure it's just an inspection and it's done, would work out a bit cheaper.

Ring a trailer place to see what they reckon.

Why not look into it? The compliance plates you buy from Carac and stamp yourself - or the trailer place that does the axle swap...
You get the #'s from RTA etc.

or do you just want a new one?

Offtopic, but my brother just fitted electric brakes to his camper himself. Not sure what was involved exactly, but I do know it wasn't very difficult or red-tape-ish.

As for campers around that mark, I'm interested to see what people say as well. My brother-in-law is looking to get into a CT for around the $6-7k mark. He was originally looking at a brand new GIC, but I've been trying to sway him towards a second hand good-name-brand one. Unfortunately there's not much out there in his price range - the ones that are cheap enough are 3/4 wrecked. I'm starting to think that a GIC (now that they come with new tyres, presumably all the same size) might not be the worst thing in the world for them.  ???

Will be watching this closely.

Tambo Cooper starts at $7.9k, from what I can see? $7k is absolute top of their budget, so that's no good for me I'm afraid.

I've had my eye on the classifieds section for a while now, but nothing has yet come up that will suit their needs.

I see you have a Subaru sign, does that mean you have one? Interested as we also have a 2007 Forester. Has been almost everywhere. we are looking for a light weight camper and it seems we are limited to a soft floor. Like the Jimboomba trailers and the lifestyle ones as well. Looked at Hard floors but they are really just too heavy for what we want. I guess we will hire first and then decide.

in SA far horizon do a decent cheap package. ours cost us 8k and apart from my stuff ups i'm fairly happy with it, of course i'd change a few things but the tents are imported not made locally so its too hard to customise, and its my first camper so i was only looking for an entry into it then when i know what i really want i'll spend the money and get that instead.
