Never been to Fraser Island ...I Know I Know..

Well planning a trip next year in Feb/Mar .tossing up between Kingfisher bay resort (KBR) and fraser beach houses (FBH)(eurong)

Now what I can't find out is weather being on the inland side (KBR) is a painfull drive each day to the surf side or weather it would be better to be on that side.

Which location is better situated for seeing all the sites.

Eurong.

Everything of interest is on the eastern side, or close to the eastern side.

Or you could stay in the middle and take your pick each day of which side you head to ... don't think there is a resort though.

Another vote for the eastern side. It takes the best part of an hour just to get back across to Eurong.

If you have kids the fenced campground at Dundubara is brilliant and relatively central to the interesting stuff like Eli Creek, Maheno and Champagne Pools.

I only drove up the east side and a bit of inland/centre stuff. I didn't think there was much over the west compared with east. It has been 10 years though since I was there.

Worth mentioning that there are some beautiful spots on the west side (away from Kingfisher), but that's also where the mozzies and sandflies are.

we stayed up just south of Cathedral Beach when we went, sorta Eugarie area..

was VERY quiet... we had the area to ourselves. but handy to Catherdal for supplies if needed.

but

the FIRST barge of school holidays the place turned to this but with 4wds....

Thanks heaps for all the replies,

KBR has 2 bedroom villas for $1050.00 per week and FBH @ eurong are $1650.00 per week (off peak)

so by the sounds of it the extra $600 will be well spent by being close to most things ..the last thing I want is an hour out and back each day. With my rig I'll use that saved $600 in fuel

Hi Jetcrew, stay on the eastern side and take one day out for a trip to kingfisher resort. Worth having a look and a good spot for the kids to have a swim. Tie it in with a trip to lake mckenzie and kill two birds. The prices on accom you've been quoted seem high. Do a bit more research maybe try stayz.com.au

There is normally holiday homes for rent between Eurong and Happy Valley. In these 'tough' times some of the property owners are open to negotiation.

This is the best way to see Fraser, it is a hoot on a motorbike, we did it a few years ago but not quite as many bikes.

Kingfisher is nice but overpriced, the beach side is also nice, it really depends what you want to do, if it's sitting around a pool all day doing nothing then KF wins hands down, but if you want to explore then the beach side is prolly better situated.

KF does some awesome meals at the resort, we normally go once or twice a year over to the resort for a seafood smorgasboard, not a cheap feed at about $200 for 2 adults and 2 kids, but you won't find better.

Check out stayz and look at all the holiday houses and units some are cheaper then the price u said. I dont like eurong as its to far south. Id we are staying in a rental it is always happy valley.

East coast is the way to go. The west coast is great for camping and fishing out through Wathumba Creek, but the mozzies and sandflies carrying you away.

Are you talking about Queensland Holidays or NSW?

I Just took a look and it looks like next year the Queensland school Holidays are changing
Queensland term dates - 2012
Queensland term dates - 2012 Term Dates Length
Term 1 Monday 23 January - Friday 30 March 10 weeks
Term 2 Tuesday 10 April - Friday 22 June 11 weeks
Term 3 Monday 9 July - Friday 21 September 11 weeks
Term 4 Monday 8 October - Friday 14 December 10 weeks

I hope so as we plan to Visit Fraser on the week of the 15th April which this year was the begining of the Queensland School Holidays as well as NSW schools... There will be still more people but hopfully only half as many...

JC, when you go to Lake McKenzie - get there early, say 9:30am or so. There is limited parking there and once all the parking is taken, you can't stop there - at all. The hordes arrive between 10am and 11am and stick around till 2pm or so, it gets quiet again after that.

Watch the crossing at Eli Creek, it's a little deeper than usual at the moment. Pic taken by friend of a friend a couple of days ago:

NEVER ... the mrs just wants her 1 week per year on holiday in a unit, this year is was gold coast and theme parks so Fraser is about a million times better than that..

It's my trade off for spending 8-10 weeks a year away on fishing trips ..

poor bugger in the Merc. I saw that car parked up out back of the Eurong resort the other day. wondered why the bonnet was up, now I know!
I used to work for an assistance co. that did roadside emergency work for all the prestige brands. We were always pulling people off the islands, the desert, the cape, everywhere... sometimes it was the car's fault.... but mostly the operator's fault for not knowing the car's limits or failing to pay attention while driving in these places.

Thanks heaps for the tip mate, we have found a 3 storey house at eurong very nice and plenty of room, very nice owner and a ripper price to .

So we will be booking it in next week or so.

It certainly didn't leave the water under its own power. Brand spankers, too. My guess is it sucked water in... too many people see footage of cars doing water crossings - or watch them in real life - and don't understand that you need to modify your car to do it safely. Or just get lucky.
