The Big Lap - What Inspired You??
« on: September 21, 2011, 07:31:51 PM »
Just a quick question, I grew up watching shows like The Leyland brothers and Malcolm Douglas ect, Recently shows like Departures and The Gall Boys have inspired me to finally stop working for the man and do The Big Lap.

What was your inspiration?

Any Tv shows ect that i should see?

What was the first things you did when starting to plan the "Trip"? ( having a little trouble deciding/working out where to start. )

Sorry I was trying to inject some humour, nothing to see here, back to regular programming.

Going to see the likes of "Northen safari" and Malcolm Douglas movies on the big screen in the local hall's. Even Alby Mangels movies helped plant the seed to tour and see Australia.
And secondly my parents for taking us kids on tours around Australia, even if the old man wouldnt get off the black top. I remember seeing dirt tracks heading off from the sealed roads and begging dad to go down them to see where it went, he wouldnt so now I have to........... ;D

Hi,
we got a table sized map of Australia, and put it under the glass top on the table. Then we spent months drawing and erasing china-graph lines on the glass as we sorted out where we would like to go and how to get there.
cheers

Did a couple of months a year tripping about, mostly 4x4 type trexs, daughter graduated from uni in WA this year so we decided to hook the van on and see where the journey took us, how long it takes is any ones guess. But since leaving in january, spent about 6 in Albany and now on the move again
cheers

working for a drilling company took me all over the country and offshore
we have drilled in remote parts of aus and i loved it and on  the odd occasion we would have a 4x4 pull up for a chat and
would stayfor the night and tell us about there travels over a cold beer and a open fire and the stars burning bright in the skies it was magic
and being a young bloke back then in my early 20's it didnt get any better then that getting payed to see the country meeting new people and learning every day

Did the big lap in 1982.
My inspiration was my parents.  I had no choice, but to go along with them.
Probably appreciate it alot more now though.

I saw the question and thought I could answer but can't.. i honestly dunno. It just sorta took shape a little trip then a bigger one, then a biiger one again till the wife I got to a point where we said if we don't do the 'real one' we will regret it.. So we did and now we don't regret it

That said, the 'real one' is just a bigger one in a whole new scale. It's not an end game that lets you sit back knowingly like you have done it all. All we wanna do is go again.. It's like heroin only more expensive  :-[ It's not the 'holiday' that we want anymore, it's a lifestyle that we crave.
