Byron will be expensive for the long weekend...you will be paying a pretty penny for the long weekend, crowds and such...as a local, I stay away from the place, its over rated and over priced.

Stay north at Brunswick Heads, 3 parks there, or south Ballina / Lennox Head area, 20min drive to Bryon...less crowds, heaps to do and cheaper on the hip pocket.

As for security, you would be OK in the Big 4 places etc
/www.ballinalakeside.com.au/  Big 4, not bad
www.flatrockcamping.com.au/  No power, good ammenities, my pick, stayed plenty of times....
www.ballinabeachpark.com.au/  Have not stayed there, but big raps..
www.brunswickheads.org.au/accommodation/holiday-caravan-parks/p/39 close to everything...nice
lake-ainsworth-holiday-park.nsw.big4.com.au/ close to the villiage of Lennox Head

But if you have to stay in Byron...that's if you have to...
www.clarkesbeach.com.au/  nice facilites, close walk to all of Byron, but being a long weekend, book quickly

Have fun...

I have only ever camped at caravan park is the First Sun right in town http://firstsunholidaypark.com.au/. Its right on the beach and close to everything.........It does get bloody busy but. I think that they all do, and because of that they're not the cheapest. Though no accom in Byron is ever that cheap.

I have never had a problem with anything being stolen from there but I haven't taken a CT there as yet.

This will give you the search page for all of the main ones.

Is your reception right in town?

Cheers

Agree with morgue,
Clarkes would be the pick. Close to town, on the beach front, a short walk to the Pass.
I guess with theft, don't give the buggers the importunity.
Unfortunately it  has attracted the thieves, scum and weirdo's.  Grew up as kid in Byron, still have the outlaws there and good mates.
A tip, If you do stay at Clarkes, walk on the beach side of the road, there and back. The scrub behind the units, is home to some freaking weird people. A couple a weeks ago, the sister in-law was jogging along the southern side of the road when a bloke jumped out of the scrub that looked like Catweazle, if it wasn't for a couple of blokes that she knew that scared him off, anyway it freaked her out.
Anyway, I'm not trying to put you off, it's just not the layed back town it was when Fysh & myself grew up there.
Hope you enjoy your stay, while there, drop into Bay Seafoods. Great fresh fish & seafood. If Freckle, Helen or Joanne are working,
Tell them Kazza & Jonno from down Lawrence way, said G'day.
Hope you enjoy your stay.
