Toyota will respond to strong demand from mining companies by reinstating a stripped-back version of its evergreen four-wheel-drive, the LandCruiser.

The revived "standard grade" model will be fitted with a 4.5-litre turbo diesel V8 and a six-speed auto and is set to retail for under $80,000, up to $10,000 less than the current base diesel model.

To save costs, it will come with vertically opposed "barn" doors, basic cloth seats and vinyl floors, as well as missing out on Landcruiser luxury touches such as push-button start, premium audio and a centre console-mounted fridge.

Toyota's senior executive director of sales and marketing, David Buttner, says even the door trims will be missing a cloth lining. "It's really, really stripped back," he says.

"Our dealers and a lot of the mines have been asking for it. We used to have a "standard grade" model years ago and we went away from it.

"It's mainly for mines but also some tradespeople. But the request mainly came from mines."

The as-yet-unnamed new LandCruiser model will be available in Australia from November and Buttner says a prototype is already in Australia.

"I had a look last week at the trial-build one out here in Australia and it's a good utilitarian vehicle," he says.

Most of the new cars have push button starts and they are pain in the arse.  I dropped my Mrs off at work the other week and started to drive off and the car was beeping like crazy and I realised that she had the keys in her handbag.

My TR3A has a push button start. The key is so smart it doesn't even have a battery in it!

I think using the gear leaver to push the pinon gear into mesh then a start button on the trans tunnel that you hit with you ankle would be cool. Just like a te20

They won't be re-tooling for barn doors, they'll already be making those for another market.

This is not big news. Take out the carpet, put in lower spec stereo and pretend that this has lowered the cost by $10K. What I couldn't gauge from the article was if it has the TTD or the single turbo?

I was told by my Toyota dealer that it will be a 6sp auto and twin turbo, will still have power windows but only 1 a/c unit, the rest as previously mentioned.

A mate of mine just purchased a 1994 80 series Cruiser standard, 4.2 diesel non turbo, barn doors, no carpet etc etc.
The guy that he bought it off kept receipts from new.
$54,500 in 1994 was the purchase price.
So to me the $70,000 price tag for the 200 series standard sounds about right.

It will be very interesting to see what Nissan Patrol pricing is going to be for the all new design.
If it ever happens.

barn doors might be stupid- but sure make getting into the back seats a hell of a lot easier.

We have ordered 2 of these already, need to replace the 105 cruisers and there was nothing on the market that would fit/ seat 8 people. (forward facing)

yea the Morris' had it too, and as said VW's and most in teh 40's until the inception of Mr Minit and the need to cut spare keys

Hmm, my memories of push starting a Landrover involved a bit more effort than simply pushing a button on the dash

If they are truly going to be mine spec then they need to have the ROPS and FOPS fitted, headlights that come on with the ignition, reversing beepers, etc etc.... that would easily add on $10k.

Something tells me they won't come out with all that on them though from the factory.
