Thanks Lost, that one works. Looks like a lot of changes as too where one can use a generator.

A couple of times I’ve camped in National Parks around Brisbane where people having been using modern generators which are whisper quiet and it hasn’t worried me. Even think the ranger spotted one being used but turned a blind eye seeing it was so quiet.

But I agree with the no generator rule for the old noisy ones, but good on companies getting approval for the new flash ones coming onto the market.

Who decides what a noisey one is and isnt?

Your going to get some bloke with an old 2 stroke, and in his eyes, its quiet and pleasing...

According to your link in a previous post, the National parks have already decided if it’s under 55dB max noise level, then they can be used between certain hours.

And the onus will probably be on the "happy camper" to prove his gennie is compliant with and regs!!

So, if you cant prove it meets the <55db (or 65dB in some areas) spec (via some form of sticker or manual), then you wont be able to use it!!

Further to that, does everyone realise how quiet 55dB is?

I jjust turner on my dB meter to check again (I work in Health & Safety now, so I have one on the  bookshelf).

The background noise in my office is 51dB.  A co worker closing the office door 5 metres away registers 64 dB.

The regulation is effectively saying - no generators in national parks.

Is there a specified distance from the noise source for these type of readings  . We run our gennie on a 30m extension lead and at that distance you can't hear it at all. The Honda EU20 spec is done at 7m but is that the distance that National Parks will use. From the Honda wed site................Noise Level 59dB(A) (54*) (dB (A) @ 7m) (* = With Eco-Throttle on)

Noise level is measured at 7 metres from the gennie.  If you can hear it, its too loud!!.

Was just talking to a customer about 20 minutes ago about gennies and NP's. he said oh well then someone will just have to put up with my stinky old 80 series diesel running for a few hours if they don't like gennies.

  We stayed in a National Park in Vic and the Ranger  came round for the fees and said " you cant have that running in here" We said we are the only ones camped here... no one for miles.Oh he said just turn it of at night!!   Lucky we didnt want the grog to get warm now did we!!!  Phil

Specs don't mention dB, but photo seems to have "54dB" on the generator.

While I fully agree with responsible people running a gennie in a Nat park...ie; away from others and only during daylight hrs.....the rules are only ever for the inconsiderate mugs who think its their right to do whatever they like...

I have camped near. ( approx 50 m away ) from someone with a Honda eu10 and while it didn't worry me at all during the day....in the still of the night, it was annoying..and I'm 1/2 deaf !!!

generators are like cane toads and arabs. They are gradualy invading the country. You wouldnt put up with one next door to your house so why would you drive for hundreds of km's into the scrub and put up with it.

In the quiet of the night sound carries a long way, people just don't get this.

We run our gennie on a 30m extension lead and at that distance you can't hear it at all.

A nice long lead is also perfect for pinching power from other peoples campsites

We run ours for about 20 min a day and it drives me up the wall But it runs my wife's hair dryer so happy wife happy life

I would never put up with one running for hours at a time but as usual rules get put in place because people are inconsiderate of others
Generators can be useful but why do people want to run them all day or night to run aircons I don't get it if you want to sit inside with the comfy aircon stay at home on your couch

Circumstances and situation dictate the correct response.
Already discussed about noise travelling etc etc.......
but.................. If you're alone in the middle of nowhere and want to run it, go to your hearts content.
if the hum of a gennie floats your boat go ahead and enjoy it.

As far as the twit at Clarencetown the other weekend who was parked about 30 metres from the powered sites and ran his generator for about 16 hours of the day............I hope Darwin prevails with you sunshine........

On another note..........no not the ear grabbing drone of a honda powering up the plasma.........
You could always ask the ranger to test it with his decibel meter and ask him to provide the calibration certificate.....
Of course this could lead to other problems though
