are you travelling around Aus in a CT
« on: August 30, 2011, 07:42:18 PM »
We are getting sick and tired of the usual monday to friday rubbish and thinking of chucking the jobs and travelling. How many people are doing it in a camper trailer and what type are you travelling in.

What do you really need, would you prefer to be in a caravan.

Cheers

Kiwial

Hi Kiwial, will be watching this discussion closely as we leave Melbourne on December the 14th in a Nissan Navara and Tambo Omeo (arriving early October).  Our son turns 1 tomorrow and we thought if we didnt do it now then we would never get around to doing it. The first opening of our apartment was last Saturday with the auction on the 17th of September, and then assuming it sells 90 days settlement terms before we leave, otherwise we will rent it out. I am doing a 4WD course with PNL 4WDriving in October, and completed a 4WD mechanics course with them a few weeks ago which was fantastic as I knew nothing about what was under the bonnet.  We are really counting the days down now and cant wait to get on the road. Our plan is to travel for around 15 months and we will then relocate to Brisbane so our boy can grow up with his cousins and a couple of his grand parents.

Kiwial x2

My job is alot on the road....the bit that sucks is watching all the grey nomads and families "living the dream" go past me in the other direction  :-[

We have bought the Camper we plan to travel in....just waiting for the money to pile up.  :D

It very much depends on your situation (kids no kids), what creature comforts you can't do without, can you handle setting up the canvas camper in the pouring rain on the odd occasion, where you want to go (cant take most caravans up the cape or accross the simpson etc).

My best advice is to hire out (or borrow if you have friends) with a similar setup caravan & camper to what you think you would buy and go for a 2 week holiday in both setups, then decide what you do and dont like about both.

We did this with our camper (caravan was never a consideration), and look at it like a small investment in your future sanity  ;D

Also trawl the caravan and camping shows and push and touch and put up and pack up the ones you like.

Have fun

Go for it Kiwial. Have a look at our blog in my sig line. We spent 6 Month on the road with 2 kids and the camper and loved it. Just done another 2 Months and still loved it. I think the best bit of having the camper are the places you can go. There are still some spots you wouldn't take a caravan but can the camper.

We did 6 months in a camper - check the link of our website in my sig line. There's no perfect set-up, you'll find pros and cons for both. Keep doing smaller trips, maybe hire some different types and see what you can see yourself in.

We did 6 mths in 08 in the 80series  towing a Camp-o-Matic c/t  and carrying a tinny on the roof of the cruiser , young fella was 9 , 23,000 klm  of which 10,000+ was dirt ,,,, would do it again in an instant except we would not use a  camper trailer as such , more likely a 4x4 type winnabago and tow a smallish 4x4 for excursions /shopping after setting up camp , our record shows that in the 6mths I set the camper trailer up 50 times , no matter how easy or quick it still becomes a pain after a while , nowadays would just like to open the mobile house's door and grab a coldie without having to put up canvas - pulling out kitchens etc, etc , each to their own,
