JAYCO 2011 Camper recalls for leaks in roof
« on: August 16, 2011, 09:44:12 PM »

Anyone know about a JAYCO recall for leaks in 2011 campers?  This was posted today on the JAYCO owners forum. Is the recall for all 2011 campers or just where there are identified concerns re leaks?

We purchased our Flamingo S/t Outback camper in early May this year and have been travelling, living in the camper for three months. Have not noticed a leak but most of out travel has been in Queensland and we had very few wet days. We are now in Victoria heading south and do expect a bit of rain!

Wouldnt surprise me, when i went down to Jayco to check out the 2011 range i was having a chat to the salesman who sold me mine, and he told me there were a few things they were scratching their head at.
Lucky i have a 2010  ;D
I wouldnt stress mate its probably a check and fix if needed, like you said im sure you would have noticed it if it was, plus there are Jayco dealers everywhere down here

I have heard that there is a problem with the roof  on the 2011 Jaycos. Both of the end roof moulds can develop hairline cracks that can open right up and leak.
I am keeping a very close eye on ours, I am aware of another forum member who has had it happen to his Hawk. His camper was getting new end roof moulds put on it.
I haven't heard about the recall yet, will check with the dealer later this week.

Jayco have a newly designed roof this year and I believe they had some problems with the new corner moulds.
I've heard Jayco are really good with there recalls and customer service, I have a few friends with new ones and never have issues with servicing.

Reckon they will recall my old 84 model Jayco pop? few issues there :-P

No dramas with my 2010 model purchased in Jan 2011.
Jayco Cairns still has a new 2010 Flamingo OB here for sale I noticed.....reckon that'd be a good deal >:D
There was a bit of hype surrounding all the supposed improvements in the 2011's.    The 2010's have a one piece roof anyway...  and the door vents on the 2011 are the same as previous ones found on the 2010's (i.e no sealant between the inner & outer vent panels)

Sounds like a case of 'new model glitches',  which is a worry with a jayco, as glitches are part n parcel of ownership, even on end of model runs like mine (had a new sink hand pump, had cables adjusted due to one corner being about an inch too low - then they had to run a complete new cable as there was no adjustment left on the one that needed it (the others were fine)).  I'll start a new thread on this.....

And many are quick to criticise Chinese made CT's, it sounds like some Australian made CT's are no better and I dont mean just Jayco.

But at least Jayco appear to have good customer service and at least do recalls ;D

It apparently concerns the earlier 2011 models that had a 3piece end mold. Later models apparently have a single piece.

A work mate got an early (March'ish) 2011 Jayco Hawk - leaked a fair bit in the roof. Had to be reparied twice as there were two leaks but the dealer was good and great service for him. I don't think he's used it since due to time constraints so can't comment if the fix worked.

Fair enough there has been a few build quality issues for some (ive been lucky) but they certainly back up their product and their after sales service is brilliant, and probably one of the main reasons why they are still such a strong seller

Emailed JAYCO with our chassis number and we are not part of recall.

We have been travelling and living in our camper for three months plus now. Bought camper in Sydney then travelled for 10 weeks in Queensland. On and off seal. Had a 1,000 km service in Townsville. Fixed few drawers not staying closed and screws on clips on on off outside clips.

No leaks. We had one heavy rainfall in Sydney -50mm plus - and no leaks from this.

Now in Mallacoota, Victoria, right on the waterfront and has been pretty stormy overnight and again camper is fine.  For us the 2011 model changes are mostly positive. We have two 9 kg bottles out of way in the boot. Still leaves lot of room for storing other things in boot. Understand from talking yo others that door in 2011 model is a real improvement. Replaced lights with LED and now find with one 100 amp battery and 100 watt solar panel, fridge a 3 way and fairly minimal power use we do not need be on mains power. Do not have a generator. We have spent a fair bit of time in National Parks where no generators or power.

Interesting, both of the rear corners on mine have cracked, it appears to be me to be caused by the roof contacting the frame on the corners. It has done about 7000km with 2000km on dirt.

Just about to organise the warranty check and service - there are a few other (relatively minor) issues as well.

Dust
fridge door comes open (litre of yoghurt on the floor is not good
length of bed fly ropes (IMO a couple of feet short)
screws that came out or were stripped
screws that were never put in
bloody silly roof isolation switch/plug fell to pieces and rocker arm fell off
electric brake wire routed between U bolts and rubber stopper (cut the wires, good job outside Wanairing pub)
canvas rubbing on top of bed rails when roof down (poor design?)

Have not had any issues which fridge opening. Found a couple of times travelling on rough sealed Queensland roads two or three draws opened emptying out some of the draw contents. We were travelling close to 100 km. Found that dropping speed to low 90s on rough sealed roads made all the difference fo us.

Dust.

Have no expectation in Jayco camper we will keep all/ most of the dust out.  For door vents just used double sided tape inside door holding piece of thick plastic over vent.  Low tech but did help a bit. Easy to remove when stopped.

Got caught a couple of times thinking gas had run out when just cut out switch in small clip that holds the cooker cover vertical.  In strong winds the window clears can push against cooker cover. Easy enough to make sure have a jug or pot on rear stove elements propping up cooker cover.

I don't expect to keep all the dust out but we got quite a bit of dust inside.

Most of the dust came through the front storage door and up through the vent on top of the fridge (back of the fridge was like a gravel pit). We also had to regularly empty out the tray on the stove griller of dust (may as well left it there it would be the most useless griller I have ever seen on a stove) Also dust through the cupboards but I think this was a lack of sealant around the sink drain hole.

We got caught with the gas going out as well with the switch on the cooker cover, IMO it is inadequate for the situation, it should be able to be locked open with the cover up. Even a slight breeze moved the cover enough to switch off the gas, real pain on a windy day.

Hi we received a received a letter in the mail letter concerning the leak. Its a concern for models built between 19/01/2011 & 31/03/2011.

Our Outback Swan is a March build and we picked it up in April. We used it twice in May and the 3rd time we went to use it we set it up in the yard first so we could pack and get the fridge cold etc I noticed there was a leak coming from one of the corners. Rang the Jayco repairers and the booked me straight in and fixed the problem. Not sure what they actually did but since I now have this letter I will find out so I know the job has been done correctly.

When we bought ours and collected it the guy that sold it to us told me use it as much as possible and dont be gentle gentle around it....use it and if anything breaks it is usually covered by warranty.

Very happy with the after care service Jayco provides. I have bought new cars which have had problems and recalls and the service Jayco provides is 100% in my books.

We have also found that the grill in our JAYCO camper is pretty hopeless.  Taken to sitting the  grill tray on a 20 mm thick wooden bread board and can at least make the morning toast. Blowing a bit at present and just found out the cut out on the cooker top also cuts power to the one electric stove element.

Howdy, Our Hawk came off the line in May. We noticed a leak in the front right corner mould after the first week.  Went back to the service agent at the 1000km service they removed and re-siliconed.  Apparently Jayco have a had few problems.  After getting back from Fraser Island trip in July the rear roof corner moulds had cracked (like Geoffwin).  Jayco sent us 4 new corner moulds with a larger flange / lip so that you can get more silicone in behind it.  The service agent fitted them last week. Yet to pick up the Hawk but hopefully all will be fine.  As others have said there has been no arguments over responsibility just lets get it fixed. Macca.

We got our letter today and been out twice in it, however when we got it home we set it up and hosed it with a hard spray of water and no leak so at this stage time will tell i guess. :police:

Had a ring from Jayco this afternoon and they are saying that there are leak concerns with around 10% of the 2011 campers sold in first part of this year. Leak is in corner moldings and very obvious. Fix is to replace all four corner moldings irrespective of how many leak.  Was told this is a 2-4 hour job you need to book in some days in advance - so dealer can order in parts.

We hope that we remain one of the 90% not affected.

Geoff

Yeah, we have a late 2011 built Swan Outback and that roof switch on the kitchen side broke off when winding down the roof the other day.

So what does it actually do? I assumed it was to perhaps isolate power to the lights or something in the even you forget to disconnect the plug inside the van?

We've done probably about 2500km since we picked up the van before Christmas and I'm waiting for a little more 'wear n tear' before I send it in for a service.

Thats what it does. Turns the lights off.

Potentially you can leave the power (the lights) on and put the roof down. This would probably contact the internals and burn the camper or burn holes in the canvas.
