Cape York with Kids <1y/o and sleeping arrangements
« on: August 10, 2011, 08:21:16 AM »
Guys,

Currently planning our Cape trip for next year and we’ve run into a little problem.

We’re after some advice on camping with kids who are about 1 years old (or will be by the time we get to the cape next year).

The initial plan (pre bub) was a 4 week trip and a roof top tent. We decided on a RTT because we weren’t real keen on setting up the Trackabout everynight/everyday/every time we stopped. If it was going to be just the wife and I then we both didn’t see the need for a 15-20 setup each night. Now with the little man about its a different story...

We can’t decide if we take the trailer and have Byron in a travel cot, or get a RTT and have him sleep with us, or get an Oztent.

Trailer cons are the extra cost in fuel, weight, something to go wrong, PITA to setup everynight.
RTT cons are mainly the safety factor of getting in/out, we probably wouldn’t get a good night sleep with bub, and the room available.
Oz tents are starting to look kind of attractive, but I need to look more into sleeping arrangements as Ive never actually been around them and seen how people do it. But, Im not keen ion sleeping on the ground up towards handbag territory.

Any words or advice???

Cheers
Chris

Chris, would it be possible to set up some sort of sleeping arrangements for the little fellow in the vehicle (back seat perhaps), and then you and your better half can sleep in the RTT.  This would keep everyone out of harms way, and save on the hassle of towing.

Ditch the trailer. I have been through what you have, our kids are now 2 and 3. We still take the tent for touring (touring tent) and they both sleep in little biker swags I made them. It's a bed roll with everything in it, their pillows etc. Before the swags, I used to take just a small 50mm mattress and made up their beds each night but it was time consuming to make and pack up. I found with the camper, it would be epic packing it up whilst trying to look after the kids at the same time (stop them from eating dirt, lying in it, throwing it at each other, hitting each other with sticks, walking onto the tent with dirty shoes etc etc - painful).

My suggestion is to keep it as simple and elementry as possible, kids adapt better than we do. Have fun!

We used a touring tent too with a port-a-cot in it at the back... worked well

Sorry guys, when you say touring tent, you mean a canvas tent or something similar to an oztent?

This is what we have.. The cot sat at the left end at the lower roof section perfectly.

Least of your worries. Most of the "made" campsites are safe - if setting up camp somewhere by yourself just be sensible about it - look for vertical height, away from the water, not on top of a pile of fish scraps, etc. Really, it's pretty hard to get eaten by a croc - millions of brainless tourists try every year, and the lizards can only be bothered to nip a couple of them.

Personally, I'd be concerned about the RTT, and the climbing up and down with a wriggling little one under one arm. Also, trips down the ladder at night would get old quick. I'd be all for taking the camper and a portacot, but I don't know how hard core you want to go. Based on the photos from last year's Cape Trip, if you've got your brain in gear, you shouldn't be too limited. With a little one, I can imagine the extra space in the camper for all the associated gear would be useful.

Good luck!
Matto :)

We used a tent but ours were 18mths and 3 years old approximately when we did the cape.  RTT might work as long as you are happy with the baby feeding arrangements?  (On other trips, when bubs were still breastfeeding, my wife much preferred being able to sit in a proper chair for middle-of-the-night feeds - and that meant having a slightly bigger tent.  Obviously would not work in an RTT.)

Im thinking a fully optioned RV4 could be the way to go, will still need a fair bit of thought.

I need to get my head around what people use for a mattress etc I not super keen on air beds (bad experience in Norway a few years ago) and I dont really want to carry a bulky foam mattress.

Some serious thinking to do

Self inflating doubles etc are BIG - the queensize didnt fit in cargo area of a GQ Wagon!

I had same issues with said $ self inflating queen size matress.. went back to our 1970s air beds.. the only issue is the cold air them, but a good blanket or doonah and then sleepin bags, and all is sweet - so far... touch wood!

Is the Trackabout really that much effort to set up? One of the reasons I got a camper was because it as so much easier to set up camp. OK, you can throw up a tent in a few minutes, or 30 seconds if you have an Oz Tent (I have a Microfast so it's one minute) but then you've got to pull out the stove, the table, the chairs, put up some shade, get junior out of the sun/rain/mozzies etc.

Do you use spreaders when you erect the annex? If yes, can it be put up without them? What is the most difficult bit?

I was about to suggest a pair of stretchers, actually. I reckon a stretcher with a self-inflating mattress on top would be excellent. If you're concerned about the space, you can get little 2cm thick self-inflaters that the hiking guys use. I probably wouldn't like to sleep on one of them on the ground, but one of them on a stretcher would be cool. Alternatively, just a couple of stretchers by themselves. Remember, you won't be dealing with snow up here. A stretcher would give you somewhere to sit on the end of as well, if feeding bub at night. Another thing to pack/unpack every day though.

I certainly wouldn't entertain a self-inflating double mattress of any type - we've got 2 x king single mats, and they're good - MUCH easier to roll up than a single big mattress, and you've got options for storing them. They're nice and light, so as long as it doesn't look like rain, I throw ours up on the roofrack in their thin little bags. If you had a roof pod/canvas travel bag up there, it would be perfect for them.

+1, I've got to admit. I can set our camper up in about 10 mins (without the annex, which you wouldn't use for overnight stops), including gas, kitchen, etc. The Tourer tent we've got is probably faster, but then as Jules says, you need to set up the bedding, sort out the kitchen stuff, and so forth. I bought the camper so I could drag it with me everywhere, I see no reason not to haul it up the cape. Heck, if McGirr can do it, I figure I've got half a shot  ;D

Thanks!
Matto :)

Hi Christofurry
My children have been camping from 1mth old we firstly had a camper with portacot for the first 2 kids then we started on some extreme trips when number 2 was 6mths old and we purchased an Oz tent RV3 and we're very happy with it.  We just left the crawler in the car seat till tent was up and put him there to let rip while we did the other jobs with the older one and gear.  Then when number 3 came along we got the RV4 which takes a little more effort to set up as has extra floor area to pull out, and did the same thing for set ups.
As for bedding my husband and I used a swag mattress and self inflatables for the kids and all sleeping bags.  We've only just ditched the swag mattress and are now using Thermorests luxury mats for us and the kids still use the same.  We've now done this set up for quite a few years and are happy with our arrangement.
I wouldn't be using the RTT as your little one will be crawling by the time you go and they really need somewhere to wind down out of the dirt at the end of each day before bed time.  Consider the RV3 over the RV4 it will be heaps big enough, unless of course you take the portacot and need the extra room - but that extra room is at the back where you can't really put much stuff.

Good luck and don't stress too much kids at that age will sleep on anything as long as they know where you are.
Cheers

Hi,
check Clark Rubber or similar for closed cell foam.
It comes in various thicknesses and firmness - it is the same stuff used in earlier bushwalking mattresses.
Get it cut to the size you want for a mattress - or -
get a cover made that has 3 'hinges' between four sections of the mattress so that you can fold it to be a cushion, cushoin with a backrest, double cushion, packing round gear that needs protection, or even as a mattress.

cheers

Plenty take their campers up the cape as we did last Month with the Frosts. Setting up for an over night was a 15 min affair. We leave the Anex zipped on but don't set it up for one night, just tie it down against wind. We also don't use pegs if not windy as the boys use self inflating mattresses in swags. The cool thing for us is they then simply get put on our bed to pack up so there is no rolling them up etc. Then set up is throw them on the floor and were done

Guys, thanks for all the advice, its been really helpful. Please keep it coming

The misses and I sat down last night and had a good think about it.

RTT is defiantly out of the question.
Oz tent is still something to consider for the future
Towing the Trackabout is pretty much the general consensus.

Our camper is quite old, but its had a full refit just after I brought it, so its up to the challenge. I think the quick setups, without the annex or pegs and with a bit more thought on how we set up the cruiser/trailer/bub combo shouldn’t be too much trouble.

There are a few things I want to get done before the trip
1. Service the winch (will probably need it at some stage up the cape)
2. De-tune the cruiser, its in a quite aggressive state of tune at the moment, with boost up around 16psi and 160rwhp which makes it a little thirsty when towing. Plus on hard slog with the camper in tow it can get a little hot under the collar, but Im working on getting a new 10mm thicker radiator.
3. New batteries in truck and camper

Anyway thats just some of the things I need to look into.

Cheers
Chris

Isn't getting a camper the reason for going away from a tent, because tents are a pain in the arse to set up??
