Towing Mirrors with Jayco Camper
« on: July 09, 2011, 03:50:51 PM »
I have a Jayco Flamingo Outback Camper on it's way, and wondering if I will need towing mirrors? I will be towing with an ML Triton dual-cab tray-back.  ???

Cheers

I have spoken to a few people about the same topic and they all say yes also because of the width of the camper you can't see anything behind you.  8)

yeah mate you will need at least one. We own a Swan and we bought one for the drivers side. If you drive in double lanes alot you may need two. There are some crap mirrors on the market though so choose wisely.

hi d4d. How do you find you mirrors at 100km/h or when a semi passes you? We also own a Prado.

When I bought them at Bayswater Jayco they threw in some extra straps. These straps attach to the towing mirror and the top door hinge on the prado. This stops them from being blown back by trucks coming the other way.

How do you find the vibration that's what annoyed me with those types.

Not that bad with the extra strap. I wasn't prepared to pay $200 each for the Aussie Truck for the amount of times I use them.

I have the same ones as D4D, they work well on the Hilux because the mirrors are quite rigid and don't move easily. I don't believe they would work as well if the cars mirrors moved easily.

Fair enough, I got one of the aussies that I used on the right and side and I use one like yours on the left.

I wouldn't pay $200 each either, I got mine for $160 the pair.

I use the same ones as D4D but usually only on the drivers side. Mind you the cruiser is probably a bit wider than the triton.  I would really like a set of the oversized original replacement mirrors but I don't think they make them for 80 series yet (can't remember the company that does them).

You can get a set of these from FleaBay for just $59-99  I have used similar ones to these in the past and they have been more than satisfactory.

I was trying to avoid the extra arm coming down the door. Even though there obviously must be less vibration when you go that way.

The legal answer in SA is:

If you stand at the rear of the towed load (camper) with the tow vehicle and load in a straight line and cannot see the etire side mirror of the tow vehicle, additional extension mirrors will be required.

Remember (a learning from 2 demerits and $160) this applies to BOTH sides of the vehicle.

Yep, that's them.  $600 is not to dear when you consider I paid $290 for a second hand 80 series electric mirror early last year to replace a busted one (internal mounts died, then mirror face).  If I brake another and the clearview are available for the 80 I will consider them as I think have big arsed wing mirrors around town would help in merging traffic as well.

why not a wireless reverse camera, wired into the side lights with a screen on the dash. Its what i use and it works a treat, gives you great vision and helps with reversing aswell.
You can get them on ebay for a great price and some include a gps function.s
Got to be better than big fugly mirror

Hi Phil,
I think I will try the Super cheap mirrors, @ $25 each it's worth a try. It's all I can do getting the Triton ready to tow, while I'm waiting for the camper to be ready early September. I don't know how you put up with the wait when you got yours, I could see through your post it was touch and go.  :D The next thing I've got to do is wire up the brake controller (hope its not too hard). How do you plug your camper in at home? do you have a 15 amp outlet. I have been looking at these -

How has yours been going have you got any more Pic's

Agree, but is a rear view camera a legal substitute for mirrors... yet?
