Winch or Diff Lockers

just watching a heap of you tube clips from the cape, which would you choose Lockers or a winch if you were setting up a for a trip to the cape and why?

Prevention is better than cure.

Lockers are also a wise safety addition, you can attempt things a lot slower with lockers.

I am the opposite

A winch will get you out of trouble

Lockers can occasionally (not always) get you further in trouble

I have both and although the winch rarely gets used  due to the fact of having lockers, it does still get used especially when towing off road.

Maybe one locker and a hand winch would give you the best of both worlds

Winch.
When lockers fail you may be left with a 3 wheel drive. Ok if you are in a Goggomobile I guess.

Ringholes to a hand winch... 4-5 hours in 38 degree heat aint fun... 20mins aint fun!

Lockers will get you into it, winch will get you out of it.

I'd go front locker and winch, but patrols have a good LSD in rear.

Winch.......You can always get out of trouble with a winch but lockers can get you further into trouble with little option of getting out. When you get stuck with the camper on the back you generally need only a short pull out and winch makes this an easy recovery.Yes, I have both which is even better but if I was choosing which I would have with a camper on the back, it would be winch every time......... :cheers:

I would say winch too. But realistically you dont need either for the cape.

The only time on the entire length of the telegraph track that we needed to recover the vehicles was at palm creek (the first crossing when heading north), the exit was wet and slippery and the only vehicles that made it out were the ones that were not towing and had great big mud tyres, just to make sure it got chewed up for the rest of us. I dont believe that lockers would have made it any better for us with a KK on the back. We would have just sat there spinning all four wheels. Therefore the we needed the winch to get out (we wimped out of gunshot and drove around on the bypass).

A winch will also let you help other people you are travelling with if need be.

Another vote for the winch over the lockers.  Much more versatile.  

We used our winch four times on our Cape trip (north bound at Gunshot Creek to get someone else out, south bound at Palm Creek to get us out, south bound at Palm Creek to get someone else out, and east bound on the Frenchman's Track getting out of Pascoe River).  We had a good LSD in the rear.

I've since fitted a locker in the front, but would buy the winch first again if I had to do it all again.

Also mate. There is about 80km of easy 4wding, with about 2k combined that has the potential to be hard. I wouldnt get too worried.

If travelling on my own which is not often I'd suggest a winch but I put down lockers as I use them far more than the winch particularly if towing. Mostly to be sure, to be sure. ;)

A locker is great just for the traction when gitting out of a few creeks.But last year at Nolans Brook i come across a ford explorer sitting in the middle.He wished he had a winch!!!!!

This comes up so often.

A winch is a recovery tool = Apple
Lockers are a traction aid = Orange

If you have nothing and you get stuck by yourself - you're stuffed
If you have lockers and get stuck by yourself - you're stuffed
If you have a winch and get stuck by yourself - you're NOT stuffed


I know which I'd fit first. Lockers are awesome - but they are not going to save you if it all turns to poo.

I agree that a winch makes getting out of a tough spot easier, but on value for money I reckon lockers benefit someone towing a camper more often.

my vote is winch.
in saying that,i have used my winch about a dozen times since i've had it,only used it to recover myself once.
seems like a waste of money only having to use it on myself only once but then again,if i was stuck with NO winch then it would be greatly appreciated if someone else with a winch came along to help me out.

Another winch vote here even though I have just fitted a front locker for our Cape trip. The winch gets used alot more than the locker but the locker was installed simply to let me try to climb out of creeks slowly(nice and slow = no damage) plus it helps strengthen my front diff(with solid pinion spacer)

As others have said its apples to oranges , in August 2008 lost the centre diff lock on our 80 series [would not engage] just prior to hitting the OTL , were towing our campomatic  , 1st realised no 4x4 at all after the 1st crossing , 12000lb chinese winch with dyna rope on steel bullbar used 5 times over the length of the OTL ,,,, diff locks can and will get you further and somtimes further into the poo whereas a winch will get you out of it.

I read years ago that the Tasmanian Hydroelectric Commission fitted electric winches to their 4WD's.   Workers kept getting stuck and blowing up winches.   They changed over to hand winches and the workers only got stuck once after that.

Just shows that most obstacles are avoidable.

But I'd go with the winch before lockers, especially if traveling alone.

Winch, lockers are no help when I want to pull the CT out of the shed (at right angles to my driveway) when the wife and kids arnt around.  A strategically placed snatch block allows the CT to be pulled out and then turned 90 degrees to attach to tug.
