Trailer lock

What do people use to secure your trailer, to stop it from being flogged when you not around. I use an ORIC coupling, have only seen wheel clamp type things.

I cover mine with I love Nissan stickers. No one has touched it yet.

Hi stepheng,

The security for my Cub Escape is a pair of high security chains with good solid padlocks.
also when I am towing the Cub Escape I put a padlock on the safety chain chain along with the D link.

From the local locksmith I purchased 2 x 1.25M lengths of special security chain, it is meant to be very hard to cut. It came with the black sleeving to protect the wheels from the chain, I also got 2 good quality ABUS padlocks both locks use the one key.

The chains wrap around the wheel and the coil suspension frame nicely.

It cost me approx $290 for the locks and chain, This should make it a bit harder for someone to nick my trailer. Sure I have insurance but I would prefer not to have to claim, to much work went into this Cub Escape.

Not a lock but am considering installing a GPS Tracker to mine.

Locks can and are broken, this is one way at least (and hopefully) you can get onto it as soon as the thing is stolen. Can track the thief and hopefully recover the CT and possessions. I was thinking of mounting the actual box in the bed part of the CT that way one would have to unfold / unpack the CT to find it and disable it. I'd wire the antenna to the undercarriage of the CT (less likely to be seen).

Same as Ray - motorbike cable around wheel/chassis. I also leave my Tregg pin in and secure it with a padlock rather than the supplied clip. Tow with it on too, and a lockable pin in the tongue, so can leave it safely hitched while I am off riding my bike etc.

Mainey, there is enough room to put the end of the chains through either side of the hitch and under the slide through lock so someone cant hook the chains on and tow it away which has been done with some trailers and caravans.

It gets used when the vehicle is left at the boat ramp. Once again its not completely thief proof but if it means they go to the next vehicle that has nothing at all to stop the trailer from being disconnected then it has done its job!

generally the people who really want something will have 'bolt cutters' suitable for cutting the thickest of chains, they will do what they have to do to take whatever they want, not much will stop them at all.

A lock of the type shown will stop those who are just incidental thieves who will take anything if it's available.

I made this to secure the treg hitch on the Xtrk . It might need three feet of heavy wall pipe welded vertically to the front . Then the jockey wheel can be removed  and the weight of the trailer will be supported by the lock and too high to be attached to any tow vehicle by the safety chains .
A guy at work lost his camper out of his car-port a couple of weeks back . He went to town and when he returned half an hour later it was gone.
