I have two mate I would lend to.
Knowing these blokes, it would come back in better condition it left in.

Like others have said though, they're probably the two that would never ask.

Have only let one mate borrow it and it came back in better condition when I gave it to him, They were also only going to the Prom so you knew it was not going anywhere tricky. It is also insured so an update would be nice.

I'd only loan it to my folks, or my inlaws - my inlaws would need the 4wd as well.

Like many have said, it would come back better than it left.

Generally, I wouldn't lend it out.

The answer would be NO, but in saying that my old camper I did loan it once and it did come back as good as I would have kept it.
But my new one the No answer would fall straight out.

I lent my previous 4wd to someone else who I very much trust, and I also lent my off road trailer out too - but no way would I ever lend out my Aussie Swag.

Tell them that you have put in many extra hours at work and made many sacrifices just to buy it, and they should go hire one.

My answer would be NO, the last time i lent a box trailer to someone who was going bush, they returned it with the front of the trailer and wheel guards all gravel blasted looked terrible had to respray the whole trailer, and that was the end of that friendship.

I can't see a problem, it's only a bloody trailer. No way would I let someone use it until I gave it a good shakedown, but then I'd lend it to people I trust and know would respect the trailer, and repair any damage.
As for people who I don't have that level of trust, I'd just say something along the line of "Sorry, if something went wrong beyond your control, I'd feel guilty, and if you did something to it, I'd have to kill you.
But then again, if our CT cost as much as a new car, I might feel different.
I guess it boils down the quality of your friends, which also reflects on you.
Cheers.

Spanking brand new NO, but seeing ours is a couple of years old I have 2 mates I would lend it too as know they would look after it. But everyone else would get a big NO.

How is the best and most polite way to tell them to get stuffed?
ask them for a 150% replacement price deposit, non refundable if there is any damage on it what so ever.

or just laugh at them.

I would definitely say NO, now, no matter who asked.

I lent my 4wd to a family member a couple of years ago and it come back with a burnt out clutch!!

I lent out my 6 x 4 trailer to a "mate" and it came back buckled and bent, when I asked him what happened he started having a go at me because my trailer had dented his car!!!! Apparently he went to pull out from a street, turning right, realized he wasn't going to make it in time, so stuck it in reverse and jack-knifed it into his car. I told him he had to fix it or just buy me a new one. He told me "it was just a trailer", I told him it was just a car and to get out of my house (in good sailor speak). End of our friendship!!

Like pretty much all have said do not lend, just say NO!!

Do they have their own 4wd? With the correct electronic brake controller? With an Anderson plug to keep the battery in order? If not, there's a good excuse to say no!

My folks have asked if they could borrow ours to take to a caravan park with their caravaning friends. It would also require the use of my Prado. They'd be the only people I would lend it to as my dad is as anal about looking after things as I am.

Cheers, Sam.

We had the same thing happen to us with our current CT.  The Man's brother asked to borrow it whilst he was waiting for his to arrive.  We had it for 1 week.  Answer was NO in a round about way.

Everything was brand spankin new (Fridge, cutlery, crockery etc) and I found it very very difficult to let someone else (doesn't matter who) use it before us.  Even now would probably still say no.

I have lent my camper out to a few blokes, but no longer, it's too much trouble and if something goes wrong it would be a difficult situation.

ah good, well I guess I'm not alone then.  Thanks for all the replies.  One of the blokes that asked me is at my work, not a good mate or anything.  If he asks again I might ask if I can borrow his 27yr old (stunning) daughter while he has it...

Need a sticker like those ute stickers: "yes it's my camper trailer: NO you can't borrow it"

I made sure I let my wife know before hand that will not lend it out so no embarrassing situations , my thing if it comes back with a hole in the canvas and the borrower has said its just a small hole and patched it with a "patch kit " not the same as then asking for the panel to be replaced . Mine is a no if they want they can hire one , or could say yes can borrow it and double the price of the hirer price.

I have two mate I would lend to.
Knowing these blokes, it would come back in better condition it left in.

Like others have said though, they're probably the two that would never ask.
This.

The only people I would lend mine to already have campers of their own, so they know the ins-and-outs of them, how to set them up without pulling D-rings out with pegs, things like that. Of course, as mentioned, these are the people who wouldn't ever ask because they themselves know how they want their own camper treated. We do have someone who's asked a couple of times, but keeps getting told no. He honestly can't see what the big deal is, thinks we're being selfish, unsharing and elitist. However his attitude that "it's just a camper, we'll be right, don't worry about it" tells me everything I need to know.

I think this is one of those situations where being seen as a little bit of a bastard is better than lending it out, having trouble, and then being seen as a complete bastard. The former can survive a friendship (and even generate respect if approached right), the latter is usually terminal for all concerned. I particularly like terravista's advice of saying no, because you don't want to put your friendship in jeopardy should something happen to some material goods. Shows you value their friendship enough to put it first.

Thanks!
Matto :)
