Roof rack, unbelievable, doesnt fit

You wont believe it , but the full lenght steel rack i got for a good price at a recent camping show, isnt gunna fit in the garage when on the car.

Noooooooo.  >:( >:( >:(

Not happy Jan, about 5 mil in it.

Kill me.

Anyone know of any tricks/mods, i know buy another house, that was my first thought.

Ill leave now to ponder my situation.  :'( :'(

I picked up about 10mm by changing the bracing bars on my Panel Lift door to a box section alloy instead of the standard angle brace.

I now clear by about 3mm.

What is it actually hitting on....can that be moved or raised.
Have been looking at new cars and the Prado won't fit on the garage, it would hit automatic door opener so worked out of I modified the bracket I would get enough room although I could go on the other side which is taller but shorter so to fit the Prado would have to move the lounge wall .....lucky I didnt like the prado

I have a Tradesman Oval rack fitted to my GU, They can supply shorter legs for the rack. I queried this only 6 months back. What brand do you have? I might consider tis this at some stage down the track. I think it lowered it by 15mm but I could be wrong.
Her eis apic when I bought the rack over 3 years ago.



Do you have a gravel driveway can you scrap some off it? Or lift the door? Or check out a section of the roof?

Thanks all for the prompt replys, particularly like the "tyre presures", "jack hammer" and the "drip of the week award".

Love good old aussie humor.

In all honesty though i have given myself an upper cut, "measure twice cut once" i think.

Some defo opitions to explore in your comments, my first call will be to the supplier to see if there are any type of shorter brackets i can use to bring it down, may even have to have something custom made.

Cant do anything to the house, it will touch on the steel angle which is placed at the top front of garages when the home was built.

Car is living outside for the next little while at the moment, wife not to happy, but she will get over it.

Keep the tricks/mods coming, even if it means having a laugh at me.

Hi,
   Local fire station had this problem with a new snorkel pumper to go in the garage, hitting the top of the door on a heritage listed building.
Cheapest option was to jack-hammer up the cement and dig down a bit.

If you drive really really fast I'm sure it might scrap under  ;D

I actually saw a van with an old Telstra rack do this in Albury years ago. The rack nearly landed on the bonnet of the magna behind him.  I helped him lift it back on, It tore the gutters like a can opener 8)

One of my carpenters tried to get in his garage one day forgetting he had a load on the racks, off comes the door and 5 hours later he gets it back on. One week later he repeats the damage, it only tok an hour to repair, hasnt done it since

reminds me of a mate of mine who came home from a long drive after being on holidays. Had his wife's $2000+ triathlon bike on the roof... got home hit the garage door remote and promptly drove in - causing immeasurable damage to a fore mentioned bike. She was not a happy camper.

yep ur right, remove it when not in use, just not that keen on ripping the thing off all the time as its as heavy as buggery.

2" anti-lift kit ;D

Keep in mind that if you do manage to get the 5 or so mm clearance that you measure it with an empty fuel load.

I have a garage with a seperate carport, doesnt everyone? reverse out and fit the rack and go on holidays!

Had a bit of laugh thinking about this thread this morning, especially when I backed out of the garage and nearly took the roller door with me.  With new coils and a little bit of air in the airbags, and the spare tyre on the roof rack,  I am just about at the limit of what will fit through the roller door.  Had to move the ratchet handle on the strap holding the spare tyre on so it wasn't on top but beside the tyre.

G'day all,

Terrican was 2 weeks old when I drove out of the garage with the tailgate up.  Court the roller door with the wiper shaft thingy and ripped the roller door from it's tracks, the wiper motor shaft tore the tailgate for about 2 inches, very expensive lesson.  Only happened once!!!!!

Reminds me of the time I helped a mate fit a body lift to his car. Worked until 1am in the morning as he wanted it finished for a rally the next day.
After finishing it wouldn't fit out of his garage.
