Mouse Plagues

Been hearing a lot about mouse plagues lately, I even read yesterday that they were attacking a pig as runing out of food...Were are all these mice or are they everywere due to the water? What do people do when camping to prevent them?..will they be dead in the next month? - I hope so, otherwise may have to pack a flame thrower or something.

spoke with a mate this morning, apparently its been below zero a couple of nights in a row.... and its dealt them a hell of a blow.... so Im hoping its all good by the time Im heading that way in a number of weeks! :cup:

The little buggers are everywhere it seems. Stayed at Farina a few weeks ago and when sitting around the fire one of the little critters ran up my leg under my jeans- scared the living bejesus out of me. While trying to drop my dacks and at the same time trying to beat the living daylights out of him he fell out dead as. And they all sat and peed themselves laughing at me too. I had the last laugh though as the relos we were travelling with left the rear door open overnight and a little bugger got in and had himself a feed. They got a little mouse killer block at Leigh creek which he had a nibble on and then climbed into the heater fan area and proceeded to jam the fan and stink the car out as he decomposed. I reckon I had the last laugh. :cheers:

We were camped at Lake Pamamaroo (Menindee Lakes) over the past couple of nights. The little visitors came in and had a great time fossicking for food, chewing through plastic bags, etc. Last night we left a piece of bread outside the van and we had only one visitor last night.

Apparently they are spread across a very large area or southern Australia. Friends in Perth and family in SA both have reported problems.

Many years ago (still at school) we lived  on the Eyre Peninsular and we had a "mompy" plague. Was fun at times but not at night when you would be woken up at night by a mouse crawling over your face

AAArrrgggghhhhh! I'm over them!!! Had one in bed with me the other night and so did my daughter. Bloody thing ran across my arm and I nearly went through the roof. We have traps set all over the house, in the roof and in the shed but just can't get on top of them.   >:( >:( >:(

It is the first time we have some of these little creatures in our house.
I have set traps in the attic but no luck so far. The traps went of, but no mouse inside.

Bigger traps!

We get the odd rat because of our Chickens, I have a trap that would snap the Incredible Hulk like a twig and creates a suburb shaking sonic boom when it goes off.  ;D Not only does it near disintegrate the poor rat that it catches but it will mercy kill any that are near.  8)

In bed, now that's not on - damn that's funny!

Yep, have had them here at Broken Hill for the last 6 months or so but have somewhat eased off since the colder weather has arrived. Still see them around, but definately not as many.

Got heaps actually Rich but must get off my butt and post some mustn't I. Had a little hospital visit that slowed me for a few days but I'll get around to it quick smart now you have reminded me.

Many years ago we used to drown the litttle buggers...Bucket 1/2 full of water, ramp up to the side and sprinkle wheat on top. Mouse runs up the ramp & plop, into the bucket.

Was doing some work in Moonie some years ago and that was the method we used. Sleeping in the shearers quarters we had about 10 buckets and they where everywhere. As you came in and turned the light on the floor started off grey and then turned to white eventually.

As far as sleeping went, in the end you got used to sleeping with a sheet over your head and wrapped up like a mummy. The feeling of them crawling over you at first is not the best thing, but after a couple of nights without sleep and big days at work in the end the  body gives up and you sleep.

The cold weather slows them down quickly.

We have used the bucket traps with a stocking bag of food on a wire in a 200L drum . That sorts a few out .   >:D

Just got back from Arkaroola/Wilpena last week and saw plenty. Brother in Law had one in Pajero after packing up but a trap soon put paid to it, now a standard travel item for the critters.
