 8)a big hello to My Swag and all of it's members. I'm new to all of this forum stuff so here goes...


I will soon be part of the Jayco camper scene and from cruising the internet this seems to be the home of CT owners.
I have a missus and 3 kids and we live in the NW and love camping. I have finally been given the go ahead (after many years wishing) to order a new Jayco Eagle outback. delivery date early August. Having trouble sleeping!!

I have never had one before but after our last camping trip and all the gear in a trailer, back of the car and on the roof rack 3 kids in tow and a dog we decided we need something a bit easier (I'm getting old) to set up.
I do have one question I was hoping someone could help me with: I have lots of extras eg: extra water tank, hot water system,slide out BBQ,battery,extra gas bottle 16" wheels, awning just to name a few.
I believe that the axle for these are rated at about 1600kg. As standard the Eagle Tare weight is 1113kg. with the extras the weight will go up  but could still stay within the limits. would it be worth upgrading to the the 2000kg axle or would that give too harsh a ride for the CT and shake everything apart?
I'm looking forward to any responses and a good read through other post's on Ideas and mod's other CT owners have made.

welcome..

i know when i travel i normally carry 200-300kgs worth of gear (on my bigger trips) in the camper, not that i true answer, but don't forget about the gear you actually pack as well as the normal weight of the camper.

tare weight = does that include water and everything (wet weight) or is it the dry weight?

Mate,  personally, I would upgrade to the 2000kg axle as it does not take much to go above 1113kg..just a bit of H2O and food etc.

Tare weight as far as I know is the weight of the van empty.

thanks for your input Hem, I had no idea how much the weight adds up when you think of the gear that you bring along. can anyone tell me how to put a profile picture on your profile?

Tare is the empty weight so you need to then add the weight of the water in the tank as well as all your gear & food

I am in the same boat. my Swan Outback is due to arrive mid- August. We went with the extended draw bar, treg hitch, 16"wheels etc but didn't consider the axle upgrade. I don't know how much a difference this will make or the cost difference.

 I would go the extra to get the 2000 axle in your case seeing there are 5 of you   
 you won,t know yourselfs when you camp with it

G'day Slydog and welcome.
We have ordered a Hawk with a fair few options also. Jayco told us we needed the upgrade coz she was gunna be to heavy. The dealer ended up chucking the axle upgrade in.
Even if your around the mark weight wise it's always nice to have a bit up your sleeve.
Its around $400 for the upgrade if ya had to pay for it.

Slydog,
         I have a 2010 outback eagle with a lot of extras, I had it weighed loaded and was 35 kgs to heavy.
   Not once did the dealer recommend axle upgrade, and i didn't realize that 2 water tanks/2 gas bottles and the little gear that is in there would bump it over.
I would definately upgrade the axle as it is cheaper now rather than later.
Just my opinion.

going by the responses I will now be upgrading to the 2000kg axle.

FYI the cost of the upgrade is $300. I guess a small price to pay for piece of mind.

Hi Slydog,
Welcome to the club and congrats on ordering your new Eagle OB.  We take delivery of our Hawk OB next week.  The dealer included the 2000kg axle upgrade at no extra charge (or at least pacakged it in with the Simplicity Suspension upgrade for $1085).   :cheers: Macca.

G'Day Slydog, great news on the Jayco, they are the way of the world mate, ur wife and kids wont know themselves when you start camping with her. I have an OB Swan and its awesome, my wife and kids love it, and when the wife is happy campin, it means i do heaps more of it.

Anyway enjoy the Jayco and the my Swag, its awesome to.

PS check out the thousands of threads on here about mods etc to the Jayco, heaps of them and all very good. ;D

hi slydog we also have the same camper as you, what is the max weight you can carry,is it 300kg or more i also have a 2 tone axle up grade but ,on the vin plate it reads 1720 ???? jayco have told me with the up grade you can only carry 300 kg ????? ??? ??? ???
