Free camp??????? at the snow?????
« on: May 16, 2011, 07:45:16 AM »
We are looking to go to the snow for the first time ever  :D and was wondering if there any places to free camp or are we better off at a van park? We are in QLD so was think Snowy Mtns would be the go. Not wanting to ski, just see the stuff, build a snow man :D pitch a snow ball at each ;D other and get back to the warmth.
Any recomendations would be great.

You can camp just down the Barry Way south of Jindabyne. Or pretty much anywhere around the lake on the South Eastern side. Depends how long you want to stay, there is a caravan park, I can't remember the name on it which is quite good and on the snowline.

Think power for heaters, not so much the cold but for keeping things dry and drying wet clothes etc.

Not to fob you off, but a search will bring up some of the excellent discussions we've had on the topic, plus photos.

Free camping is as Danbri has written. For facilities, camp at Jindabyne Holiday Park or at the NPWS-run Sawpit Creek. Stayed in Jindabyne with my family and a $10 electric heater, was terrific.

We have camped a few times between Threadbo and Jindy. Around 7km from Thredbo I think it was. Right on the river. The last time was in summer Jan 3rd and we had a full frost  ;D

I camped there when we went mountain biking down buller one easter too. It was 22c one day the 5c the next.
