« on: April 26, 2011, 05:01:39 PM »
Afternoon all,

Has anyone got a Webber Go Anywhere? I am interested in performance and storage on long trips.

Tried the Cobb and moved on, so please no debate.

Cheers

I have a webber like that but it is old now and it is just for heat beads not with the gas.  I am assuming you want to know about the ones fitted with gas?

Steve,
I bought a cheap knock-off from stratco (cost about $30 from memory).  I've used it a few times away and at home and it's been quite good, one down side is that the coals are very close to the grill so it does require a bit more attention than the standard weber kettle which I use at home to avoid burning the surface of the meat.

I cooked a boned leg of lamb cooked "flat" on the grill for Australia Day last year and it was very good, the usual fantastic weber smokey flavour and cooked to perfection.  fairly easy to transport with the only exception being the lid handle which does stick up a bit but aside from that it's good for something different.

I must admit I'm more inclined to use the camp oven and hillbilly grill setup over a campfire so we don't take this with us very often, mainly when in a park where open fires aren't allowed but I can get away with the contained charcoal cooker.

cheers, adrian

Ahh Ok, I have had mine for years.  I would suggest near on 20 years my mother got for me.  I have not used it alot but I am not a great one for using the heat beads, I recently sold a Cobb Cooker for the same reason.  Now does it work, Yes.  They do a great job for cooking roasts etc.  If you like using the Webber style cookers I would say go for it.

Craig,
Why do reckon they go out?

If roasting do you spread the beads to each end a place the roast on a trivet?

Blue One

they only go out with the lid on so i guess they are oxygen starved . ive tryed drilling more holes in the bottom of the bbq to get more air flow but it didnt work ... they just lose there heat .if i do a leg of lamb i just de bone the leg .. then butterfly the meat and then cook it like a big steak with the lid off and it does this with no dramas its only when i put the lid on .that they loose heat .

when i smoke i cook the meat on one side then add the hickory chips, tuen the meat  and put the lid on .by the time it looses the heat i have cooked and smoked anyway so its not a drama.

ive just put it down to a cheap chinese bbq .

Hi Blue one,

We've had one for years, probably 15 and don't go anywhere without it, have even taken it on a plane when we hired a camper in central Oz. Storage wise a bag of heat beads fits right inside so it very compact in that regard. cooking wise we've had no problem with the beads going out, you do need to have them white hot before you start cooking and if the food to be cooked is large you need to have enough beads in there to complete the cooking process, it's difficult to add extra half way through. We use the self lighting beads much quicker and easier to light. When you finish cooking you can add more beads or timber and use it as a open fire, we have done this on many many occasions and using it this way you don't even leave your mark on the ground either.
We love ours and have used it so much that we have had to replace to bottom grill (supporting the coals) 3 times and the upper meat grill twice, both have worn out generally due to heat and rust but a call to Webber and you get your new one in about 2 days delivered to your door.

I'd go for it, the newer ones with the plastic handles are not as good as the older timber handled ones the plastic doesn't seem to last, but just remember if you go for one it's all about the beads and getting the right number to start with and having them white hot before you start cooking.

All the best.

I bought the cheap knock-off about two years ago. The handle sticks up at the top which is the only negative for storage as it sticks out above the storage box we have it in.

It is a great item for the camper as it is so versatile. It can be used in most caravan parks. We put a tent peg in each corner and put our bbq plate on top. The pegs allow the plate to be above the beads so that air flow is not restricted. I also use it to do my camp oven on as the heat is constant and less messy than coals.

I can't wait for my cheapy to die so that I can get the real thing...wouldn't go camping without one.
