Swap & Go Gas
« on: April 21, 2011, 06:44:14 PM »
Something to be alert for.   I just went to the 7-11 to get a full 9kg bottle of gas for Easter.   I'm sure I only had it for a couple of years since the last swap over.   (Maybe longer but well under 10 years)   When the guy checked its date it was over 10 years since last checked so I had to pay an extra $10 before he'd swap it over.    >:(

A little wiser now, I thought I'd better check the date on the bottle I was picking up.   The first one I grabbed was last checked in May 2001.   (Due to be re-checked in a couple of weeks!)   I put it back.   Whoever gets this bottle will be up for an the extra $10 checking fee if he keeps it for more than a month.

I suggested to the attendant that maybe it was wrong to sell this one to someone.   His only advice was that I should check the dates myself.

Was this a branded bottle? It is my understanding that if you are swapping a branded bottle that regardless of the date you don't need to pay the fee.

Best lookup their website for T&Cs.

Ps in my uni days I worked in a servo.

What is worse is when you get an out of date bottle delivered. At least they swapped it again the next day when I called them.

Unfortunately I'd left it until the last minute to get gas for the weekend.   It cost me $45 to exchange the empty for the full 9kg bottle.   I know where I can buy a new bottle full of gas (no exchange) for less than $35, but not afterhours :( .

don't do the swap and go thing any more I go to the local steel supplier $15 bucks cheaper for a 9kg than swap and go

Been stung like that myself, the one & only time I've used 'em. Lucky for me, I was swapping 'em for a company, not myself :)
Had a look at the available bottles, the longest date was 18mths.
From that single experience, when I got the CT I bought a bottle outright & get it filled. Have to travel 25k to do it though, all gas supplier 'round here a swap-n-go = expensive gas  >:(

I do the opposite. When my bottles are out of date I go to a servo when it's busy and there are women working and swap it
Easy...

And don't weigh it when you get home unless you like further disappointment.  Last one I checked was a full 8Kg only.

Old mate at the local steel shop jams as much as he can in it for me he's gotten to know me now over time and I'd rather have chat to old mate for 5-10 min than get ripped off for convenience.

its pretty obvious swap n go are over priced and under weight so why support them go why not support the local bloke in the industrial area and get propper service surely we can all spare 10min.
the last time I was getting a gas refill i told him about a little project i was doing he gave me a few bits of steel he had laying around not bad at all he's got my business

when you refil your  old bottle you'll get 9 kg's of gas instead of 8.5kg the swap and go bottles have. I'm lead to believe the swap and go bottles are a normal 9kg bottle but they only put 8.5 kg's of gas in them! That's how they make there money.

I just pay buy the litre , 9Kg = 9 litre's x what ever the price of gas is.

Swap and Go's are filled by weight, they dont open the relief valve. Its normally 8.5kg but some are ripping you and putting 8kg. The guys who fill your bottle open the relief valve and FILL the bottle, much better for you.

LPG dosnt weigh 1kg per Litre its more like just a bit under 2kg per litre. If you filling it at a servo on auto gas be carefull because mostarnt straight lpg they are a mix of lpg and butain.

Cheers Pauly

Happy to confirm that Bunnings will accept any out of date bottle, provided that it still has its protective top collar, and bottom ring.  Although they may make an occasional loss on an out of date bottle, they have instructed their team to accept them without issue as part of their customer service.  (Shareholders don't care, since kleenheat who provide the gas is also part of Wesfarmers.)

I had a bottle delivered via Bunnings/Kleeheat which was dated 1995 and no other stamp to say it was retested. I called up Kleenheat and they said no problem they'd swap it the next day. The guy from Kleenheat dropped off the new bottle and this one was stamped 1994. When I questioned him on why/how they were using out of bottles he said 'they're all retested', I said yes they might be but how is the consumer meant to know if there is nothing stamped on the bottle. I then asked him if he would use the bottle he just dropped off with a 1994 stamp on it. He went back to his ute and brought me a 2008 bottle.
