Turn Engel 60lt Combi Lid 180*??????????
« on: April 19, 2011, 02:41:53 PM »
Has anyone done a lid mod on a 60lt Engel Combi?

I need to rotate the lid 180* to make access easier, I have it mounted in the Drifta Storage Box in the CT and I need to keep the compressor end at the rear of the CT where the holes are for air flow so just turning the whole fridge 180* is not an option.

As it is Darling has trouble reaching over into the fridge section, when the kitchen is set up there is no access down the left hand side of the storage box.

The hinge and latches look like they are just screwed on but may have captive nuts. Just thought I would ask the question.

Might be less risky getting a taller wife, but maybe you didn't want to spend that much.

You're right, they do seem to be just screwed in. I haven't taken apart my 60L, but the 40L is easy to open up. Take the hinges off and have a look. Maybe look in from the compressor end and check if there is anything obviously in the way, but not likely.

I looked into this some time ago also, I have the 80ltr combi and when in the back of my Patrol on the draws it can only go on the right hand side and the fridge slide only brings it out so far so ya have to have the compressor towards thefront of the vehicle, then when you open the fridge you have to climb over the spare on the back door to access the fridge, so I asked around and couldnt get any answers even emailed engel and they didnt answer, but when you take the lid of you can see that it is reinforced where the hinges are, and also the locks and they dont match up to do a swap so I dont think it can be done. To solve my problem I went and bought a 40 ltr for the car and keep the 80 for camping.

Is it possible to just turn the fridge around, run some flexible ducting and a pc fan for ventilation, or have the ventilation holes underneath, again with a pc fan to push or pull air

Cannot say for certain on that one, but has been done on a 15ltr one. Was changed from lifting back towards the controls to side lift and it had a 13mm piece of melamine screw onto the top of it. This fridge spent years in a truck with no problems.
