Swinging Camper Tailgate
« on: March 22, 2011, 07:46:22 PM »
Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone else has changed a drop down tailgate to a swing open tailgate on a Camper Trailer?

Ours drops down, but I want to have it swing open and put a lift up shelf on it so it's more at waist height than knee height.

I've already figured out what I'm going to do ie 2 x hinges ion the left welded on (maybe nuts & bolts also). Then a shelf that is attached on the inside of the tailgate (the same length and width minus about 10mm all round) with a few more hinges. Then 2 folding arms on either side that can click in place when lifted up.

Just wondering if there's any other suggestions on how to do it.

Cheers

Craig

:D Ours is swung. I think you've basically answered your own question though, ours uses 3 hinges though.  It might be an idea to weld an internal small box section across the top (side to side) to help brace it so the sides don't flex at the top and the door can butt onto it.  Our strut for our top also mounts on this brace.
