Toilets and dont take the pi** ;)
« on: March 21, 2011, 01:00:18 PM »
We are getting close to our round OZ trip and getting the last few things ( have teh 4x4 and camper ;)  )  and are starting to look at portable toilets.

Any sugestions as to the ones to look at and the ones to stay away from?

We were going to head the Bush toilet way but no sure we can squat for 6-8 months.

Let us know :)

Don't think you can beat Thetford for porta pottis - and no brand napisan powder for the flush and storage .

Gidday honeymooners, We went along to BCF and bought one of their portaloos and it's been just fine.

Personally 'ours' is for the lady of the camp only as I either use the public loo or the bush.  :D

And here's my best tip - come bed time I have my own personal plastic bottle (with large opening :-*) for those emergency during the night pees. This avoids falling over guy ropes as a fumble about half awake. Next day take the bottle in your shaving & washing kit to the public loo and empty it. Easy as!

Only real downside of the portaloos that I can find is that the bloke always gets the job to empty the cassette but again no big deal.

Something to consider - Which chemicals? Some are good and some are not. Talk to BCF, other camp shops or perhaps others on here can help about the chemicals that you add to the portaloo that make it okay to empty in the septic and Bob's ya Uncle....you will both be happy campers.

Happy trails and enjoy your trip - Wayne

I have always had a thetford..  You have to be careful of the cheaper ones as they tend to have thinner plastic walls and the last thing you want is to have a break or leak!

Hey Blinky Bill, Don't mistake that bottle for your drink mate! hahahaha...

We have made one from plywood with a standard toilet seat on it. not very compact but a great view as you are doing your business in the morning watching the waves roll in  ;D

I have friends who have both bought the ALDI specials and neither of them can fault them.  One couple travel full time and use their Aldi special all the time.  They have had it for almost 2 years now and not one issue.

They cost under $100.

We have the Thetford 365 and find it excellent. I see you are in Brissy so check out Tentworld, they are in Windsor on the northside and at Browns Plains on the southside. They have the 365 for around $169 and with the Thetford brand you can get replacement parts from most places around the country. Check out this link for further details.

LOL!  No toilet is gonna be big enough for a 6 -8 month "squat" mate.  Thanks for the chuckle!

Well here goes, a different answer, I have one of thoses folding toilets with the plastic bags 20 bucks at big w but instead of a plastic bag I use a plastic bucket you get from the cheap shops and if in the bush tip it out in the morning if in a caravan park put the bucket in one of the green shopping bags take it to the loos and tip it down the loo. If out in the bush during the day i take it to a good spot and do my bit so I don't have to squat as the knees a getting a bit old and a smashed ankle doesnt go well for squatting

Hubby made this folding one...not as thin as the Jimmy's but works well. We place a biodegradable bag with no bottom in to line it and bury the bag in the hole after...works well for us  :D

Hey honeymooners,

Like Robbo, we picked up a Thetford Portapottie 365. We got ours from BCF, because we had vouchers. Was cheap - personally I didn't want to risk buying a non-Thetford one, even though I know others have had very good runs out of them. To me, I'd rather pay the bit extra and know I've got the original.

We wanted the 365 because it was the biggest (both holding-tank-wise and flushing-tank-wise), and has the piston-operated action, not the air pump. It just fits in the large front toolbox on the Trackabout, if you've got the larger box. If I could figure out how to secure the shower tent to the drawbar, all I'd need to do is take a stepladder with us and it would never need to leave it's new home.   8)

We got the "green" chemicals that went in it - I can't remember the exact ones, they were the proper Thetford ones, but the biodegradable ones that are safe for septic systems and such. Figured we may as well be as green as we can. Time will tell if that was a smart decision.

Would love to give you a run down on the finer points of it's use, but alas we've not had a chance to get away and give it a workout yet.

Thanks!
Matto :)

Matto,

We only have the standard box that came with the camper, though not small not sure it would fit the Toilet in it. Wish it would , That is a fantastic fit in there and less contact with the other items in the trailer. must look into it !!!!!!!!!!!!

Would have upgraded to the bigger one if we had thought of that!

Did you just bolt the holding hooks onto box?

Thanks for the Idea ;)

Hey honeymooners,

You may be out of luck then. Have a look at the smaller toilets in case one of those would fit, but then you've got to empty more frequently, so it's 6 of 1, half a dozen of the other. We wanted it in the toolbox so that any spillages would be self contained. To be honest though, everything I've read seems to indicate that it's practically impossible to get a Thetford porta pottie to leak. People fit them in the back of cars, in boats on rocking seas, and so forth, and have never have a problem. There's a big porta pottie thread on here which we read a couple of hundred times before making our decision, and in there someone bought one and the first thing they did was fill it up with water and splash it all around, turn it upside down, shake it overhead, etc - not a drop came out at all. So I think you're pretty safe. I was just being paranoid.

As an aside, I've no reason to doubt that non-Thetford-branded ones would be any less well sealed, but as mentioned above, I was happy to pay the extra $70 or so to get the proper Thetford brand. Call it the Matto Peace Of Mind tax.  ;) ::)

As for the hooks - yup - they're just bolted through the back wall of the toolbox. If you want some close up photos and more details, have a squiz over here... I imagine if you wanted to, you could do a similar setup inside the tub of the trailer, up near the front wall maybe. That way when you set up camp, you could just tilt up the bed base, and reach in and pick the loo up and out. Would keep it up the other end from your kitchen. The wide, flat bungee cords I've got from Bunnings would be quite capable of holding it securely into a corner of the trailer tub. I should take a photo of them for you too - they work a treat.

As for the ideas - they're all yours! That's what this place is all about. Goodness knows I probably stole the design from someone else's setup that I saw month's before!  ;D ;D Good luck for coming with a solution for your individual situation!

Thanks!
Matto :)
