Camping destination for family in S.A
« on: January 25, 2011, 06:17:41 AM »
Guys I need some help,
I am a first time poster even though I have been lurking fair a while!
Wifey and I have just bought our brand new challenge camper and are looking to take it on her maiden trip to the Flinders!
looking at the temperatures up there it may be too hot for the little one and I don't want our first trip to be a disaster!
Has anyone got any suggestions of a nice spot anywhere within 5 hours of Adelaide that would make a memorable family trip to break in the new camper!

Close to Adelaide there is Rapid Bay (good for kids as very near the beach and Jetty) and Deep Creek Conservation Park (Trigg Camping Ground is better than Tapanappa for CT's).  Both are relatively cheap and have toilets, no showers, no water to speak of either, BYO.

We have used both recently and like them both.

Cheers and have fun breaking in the camper.

Welcome Woody
Burra creek Gorge is a nice spot with permanent water and Yabbies.
Morgan on the Murray is great as well.
Robe if you want to do some beach driving.
Yorke peninsula has some great spots too.
We just spent 2 nights at Lipson cove on Eyre Peninsula a fantastic spot but that would be about 6-7 hours.

Have fun breaking the camper in.

As Davidy61 said Rapid bay, Deep creek conversation Park. If you go down to Victor harbour, Port Elliot, Goowla it is always 4-5 degrees cooler than up north.
We head south in the summer and head north in cooler months.
Go buy some camp books which will tell you places to stay. I have this one.

Hi Woody and welcome to My Swag.

Have a look at the Limestone Coast, Robe is within 5 hours from Adelaide, much cooler and a very nice place. There are caravan parks (Millicent is cheaper than Robe) national Parks and free campsites available down that way. (grab Camps 5 and check it out)

Enjoy your maiden trip in the Challenge CT.

Yep Robe is a top spot, It can getting windy this time of year though but the scenery sure makes ups for that. Also if its not flooded yet Renmark by the river is good for family camping. The Clare Valley also offer plenty to do.

In the cooler months don't forget about Pildappa Rock on the edge of the Gawler Ranges, another top spot.

Hi woody, we stayed in rapid bay on the way to kangaroo Island and thought it was a great spot, we have also stayed at robe which was great and beachport is not bad either.

Woody,

Slightly off topic, but when you do get to the Flinders, in the cooler weather, Willow Springs Station is the place to stay near Wilpena.  No power, drop toilets at each camp site and showers at the homestead.  It is also home to Skytrek.

Stingy Bark Campground in Deep Creek Conservation Park if you really want to break into bush camping gently. This place has hot showers, good supply of fresh water and some really nice walks. Also very close to one of the prettiest beaches anywhere in the country.....Blowhole Beach.  Coordinates for Stringy Bark are 35° 36' 26" S 138° 14' 25" E and Blowhole Beach 35° 39' 18" S 138° 09' 25" E.  Naracoorte Caves camping area is also worth a look - even had free washing machines and dryers. Visiting from the east we bought a 2 month holiday parks pass and this covered camping in these areas.

Sky trek was great.  there was noting really technical about it, but has some of the best views of the flinders we have seen.

We are the other side of the valley in Greenock.
