Kimberley Kamper owners
« on: December 17, 2010, 01:03:30 PM »
Hi all,

I have my 07 platinum and I seem to be having a little problem with water leaking where the awning zips onto the tent. above kitchen

1. I have had the internal bows adjusted

2. I make 200% sure that trhe velcro flap is on nice and neat.

3. The awning is leaning away from tent.

What has me stuffed is that there is a canvass flap over the zip so the water has to be getting through the flap (it is not blowing under) I think it may be letting it through the stiching where all the canvass meets right above the kitchen on the 1st bow.

I notice that the dealer has used a wax stick and waxed up the stiching in this area (worried it might have been an ongoing issue from previous owner.)

Or the tent needs to be seasoned which may well be the case it is an 07 so I figure that should be done but you never know .

So has anyone else experienced water dripping from this point it is right above the kitchen when looking up from under the awning.

Yeah thats it. There seems to be areas near the mesh and zippers the track or wick water in. I have never realy worried too much about it though.

My quick awning leaks pretty badly. I am about to try a wax stick to see if that fixes it. It pours in at several spots but the main problem area is directly above the stove Through the zip and where the velcro for the corners is attatched, it is that bad that it puts the stove burner out when cooking while it is raining...lol...hope i can sort it out.

And yes i did season it...

Yeah thats were mine comes through as well (through the zipper).

But as I said with the flap over the top of the zip it just should not get through there  ?.

Could it be the needle size when the canvass is stiched ? and it leaves to big a hole for the canvass to cover over .

I have noticed that alot of the stiching looks raised rather than pressed in like on other campers I have owned.

I have mine booked in first week after X-mas for some other fix ups so I will try and find out why oh why.

WOW,
You all surprise me. Ours has never leaked anywhere.
We always make sure that where the main awning connects to the front awning is the high point so water cannot run back into the Velcro/Zip.

Thats what I have been doing as well , but it seems that the water runs off the tropical roof and wants to go onto the flap over the zip and thus it leaks through ,first time it filled the kitchen up with water. Now I have to pack kitchen away each time it rains. and its not funny anymore. Had the bows cantered to angle them away from zipper but it made the tent set up croked so had to put them back a little.

Got me stuffed but there might be a simple solution .And I might be doing something wrong (besides camping in the rain)

Had my trackabout in 7 days of straight rain 2 years ago at Easter and it never leaked a drop. :cup:

Well you have got me stuffed!!!
I have to say a leak like that would drive me nuts.
It can only be coming through the stitching, the canvas or the zip.
Is there any way you can tape plastic over small sections at a time and hose it to try and trace the leak.
Put the acid on Kimberley they do all their canvas in house and pride themselves on the quality.
Big selling point is that they are dust and water proof.

Cheers

Is it the quik awning or the full 2.4M awning leaking ??

My quik awning has leaked for a couple of yrs, at the same spot you mention, but have recently used a wax stick on the stitching that holds the velcro for the awning when it's folded in ,  and last time in the flogging down rain it seems to have fixed it .....the quik awning canvas is different to the rest of the camper....seems more synthetic than the rest of the camper ??....but if you angle it towards the zipper, it will get thru the velcro and leak thru the zipper....but most campers are the same, water needs to run away from everything..

The big 2.4M awning has only ever leaked at the holes where the poles go thru.....and the tent has never leaked a drop since the 1st time out in the rain ( it wicked down a seam slightly )

When you say the "bows"....which bows are you talking about ?? Internal bows don't get touched at all ( after the tent has been setup properly 1st time )..

hi jetcrew the water isnt getting in up on the top bow then running back down, or anywhere on the way down, then running all the way down behind the zip, under the velcro flap, to the first exit above the kitchen.i have a  02 LE, and with the 2.4 awning up that is the time i have had water enter the kit area (that was cup weekend at merton Vic).water was entering under the velcro flap about 2/3 of the way up. it was where the velcro did not mesh properly (allways the velcros fault),and the resulting crease ,was even facing the right way to let the water enter. when i fixed the problem ,i noticed that the flap was damp down from the creased area and dry above .you could see water on the flap when i loosened off the guyropes, then unzipped to where i thought i had to go to thats when i noticed the telltale water tracks. once i fixed that it was allgood, had plenty of good heavy rain, dry as.apart from that glitch i have not had any water entering the camper.hope that can help in any way. cheers&beers seeya in the mud Graham

Gronk,

It's the 2.4 . I have had the tent bows adjusted by kimberley as they said they were not right and thus thats why the water was leaking.

Apparantly the front bow at the gullwing end was leaning towards the awning side too much so they adjusted it from inside and said that should fix it.

But the issue is that the water runs down off the trop roof and chanels towards the awning and then seems to ingress the stiching and then seep through the zipper. Right at the coner of the front bow where there is alot of stiching.

I stood in the rain and studied it last weekend and I am stuffed if I can find a way to prevent it.

The only thing I can think of is to set camper up on a slight lean to get water to run away to the other side of camper .

I feel better knowing I am not the only one . Not really good though for the $$$ we all paid it should not happen.

Is it leaking thru the camper stitching....or the awning stitching ??

Water that runs off the tropical roof mainly runs straight down the front awning, but any that goes to the main awning area should run straight over the zipper flap and run towards the outside of the main awning and spill over at a pole..

Don't suppose you have any photos of your camper setup ??

The main awning needs to be setup so it falls away from the camper......if not, the water will get under the velcro and leak thru the zipper ..

I will get it set up in backyard over x-mas and take some pics for you.

You are correct in that the water should run over that flap. and I think that this flap, that is attached to the main tent is the cause of the problem. It is letting water through (not under from velcro)and then leaks through the teeth on the zipper.

Awning is always angled away from tent .

I think as said that the stiching on the cover flap that is attached to main tent may infact be the culprit. I will get some pics up. As I will need em to show kimberley.

I am not at this stage saying it is the campers fault it may well be something I am doing wrong but I have done all the things you more experienced KK owners have suggested. In relation to set up ect.and even followed kimberleys instructions after the first time and it still leaks.

All is good though we love the kamper and I am sure this little problem will be resolved. Might just need a bloody good waxing.
