3/4 roof rack & roll out awning (can it be done?)
« on: December 13, 2010, 03:19:42 AM »
G'day all,

I have found a 3/4 length roof rack for sale, it's been used on one trip and was purchased 6 months ago by the current owner. It's currently on a 100 series cruiser and this is the same vehicle i have. He wants $450 for it and from i can see thats a pretty good price (just did a quick check on Ebay) it's a tubular steel type and has the word "Cruiser" cut into the front panel on the rack basket, not sure of the brand as yet.
Anyway i'm wondering if someone can tell me if a typical roll out awning can be attached to a 3/4 roof rack, or do they have to be full length units.
Also feel free to correct me if i'm wrong regarding the sale price.

Thanks in advance.

It sounds as though the rack should fit yours , & it will be handy for all the stuff that you want to carry but not use all the time . With an awning attached it will come in very handy as its quick cover . If the awning is attached then yes you can attach . Go & have a gander check it out , condition & how it rolls out . If all good jump on it  ;D
You can go your own way . Treg Up & Make Dust

Thanks for the reply.
Ahh yes should of mentioned, i can't go and have a look because presently i'm not even in Aus (bloody work)....
There is no awning attached at the moment, but i've been thinking about setting the Cruiser up with a rack and an awning, then i've found this 3/4 unit and am unsure if "generally speaking" a typical awning can be attached to a 3/4 length rack.
I've been looking through some images of awnings and racks and see that most decent sized awnings are longer then a lot of the racks they are fitted to, so i'm thinking the mounting system must be pretty universal, i guess just a little concerned that i might be restricted to only a smaller awning.

Sounds like it might be a 'powerful4x4' (www.powerful4x4.com.au). They usually have an ad in 4wd Action. Have a look in the current 4wd Action 'cos they have a few specials that I couldn't see on their web site.

You should be able to mount an awning to a 3/4 roof rack - worst case scenario bolt a length of RHS to the roof rack and then mount the awning to the RHS.

Hey Barra,

It should work.

Our Rola roof basket is a short one - probably only about a 1/2 length compared to your 3/4 length basket. We've got a 2.5m home-made awning that we attach to the side of it. For the front half of the length of the awning, it's completely unsupported. Over corrugations it can wobble around, but it's yet to break or show any signs of stress. I've been meaning to reinforce it across that front length with an additional piece of 20mm aluminium box/angle, just to provide a bit extra rigidity. Worst case, that's probably all you'd need to do to yours. But I'd hazard a guess that it would be fine.

I'd second Geopaj's guess about the Powerful4x4 brand - that's what it sounds like to me. I would imagine $450 would be a pretty good price, but am not exactly up on good deals for cruiser roof racks :).

Good luck with it!
Matto :)
