Beach Permit costs for SE Qld
« on: October 04, 2019, 05:19:07 PM »
Maybe this should be in the Rant section. It is also a bit of a heads up for those who frequent Stradbroke Island.

So some friends are  currently staying in a few houses on Fraser Island happy valley and offered for me to come over for the weekend. It got me searching the costs etc and whether it was worth fighting the hoard’s of people. I think I have worked out that I’m not going.
Anyway whilst on the Qld parks site I came across the message found on this page
https://parks.des.qld.gov.au/recreation-areas/faqs/

Quote
From 1 November 2019

What are the changes to vehicle access permits for the Minjerribah Recreation Area on Minjerribah (North Stradbroke Island)?
From 1 November 2019 new vehicle access permit fees will apply to visitors wishing to drive on Main Beach and Flinders Beach within the Minjerribah Recreation Area on Minjerribah (North Stradbroke Island). A new monthly vehicle access permit will be available at a cost of $52.75. The annual vehicle access permit fee will be $158.00. These fees apply per vehicle regardless of the number of passengers.

Why have the fees changed?
The fees were changed to improve consistency with vehicle access permit fees for other recreation areas in south east Queensland such as Bribie and Moreton Islands, and to support ongoing management of the Minjerribah Recreation Area by the Quandamooka First Nation People.

Up until 31 October the fees are $47.85 for 12months

What are the fees at other parks
Bribie Island

Vehicle access permit fee

1 week or less—$50.60
More than 1 week (up to 1 year)—$158.00
Read more about Bribie Island recreation area.

Cooloola

Vehicle access permit fee

1 calendar day—$13.20 (online price) or $19.90 (offline price)
1 week or less—$33.50
1 month or less—$52.75
More than 1 month (up to 1 year)—$265.30
Read more about Cooloola recreation area.

K’gari (Fraser Island)

Vehicle access permit fee

1 month or less—$52.75
More than 1 month (up to 1 year)—$265.30
Read more about K’gari (Fraser Island) recreation area.

K’gari (Fraser Island) and Cooloola Recreation Area

You may buy a combined permit for K’gari (Fraser Island) and Cooloola with a 20% discount.

Vehicle access permit fee

1 month or less—$84.65
More than 1 month (up to 1 year)—$424.70
Minjerribah

Vehicle access permit fee

More than one month (up to 1 year)—$47.85
Read more about Minjerribah recreation area.

Moreton Island

Vehicle access permit fee

1 month or less—$52.75
More than 1 month (up to 1 year)—$265.30
Read more about Moreton Island recreation area.
End quote

So the fees are being increased 3 fold from $48 to $158 for consistency with other park permits yet looking at the other fees of other parks I cannot see the consistency.
I just wish for consistency that I could buy a single all access permit, I would be happy to pay some reasonable amount. NSW has 12 months a all park entry ( with premium for Snow) and in fact hand them out to RFS members.
Why can’t Queensland do similar?
Anyway I will buy a pass for straddle before they go up 31 October as it is our favourite and will be back in the next 12 months

Bribie has been super expensive for ages, hence why they can go have sex with themselves. I've lived up here for 24yrs and never been on it in the 4by.  ;)

That last I saw the fine for driving with no permit was only $150.

You can do the cost Vs risk calculations for yourself... ;)

I totally disagree - just another way of privileging those with money.

Maybe what they could do is get rid of annual passes, except for locals which should be free or low cost, and limit the number of daily passes just like they do for camping.

I’ve never been checked when just driving on the beach but last time I camped at Bribie the rangers checked I had both a camping permit and driving permit.

I've been busted by a ranger parked at the concrete block at the "no go past" point.

I hadn't been up the island for 20 years when it happened, and super low tide made this 'unexpected' sign a bit hard to notice, (for me,)...

So it didn't help when I drove straight past the bunker to the tip of tbe island..

But all the ranger did was 'encourage me' to go online on the beach and purchase my day pass, (which I did) ... though he simply drove off after our chat...

But to consider paying about $50 for a few hours up the beach on low tide makes me sick...

The 15 minute track in to the beach is such a pathetic disgrace  - they ought to resign in shame...

Total rip off because of zero maintained track in....   (Its a vehicle wrecker on anything above 5km p/h)....    and imagine trying to crawl through that powdery slop at that low speed !!!

You get out and in to the world -- you take more @#&$. …You climb a little higher, ..you take less @#&$.  …Till one day -- you're up in the rarefied atmosphere -- and you've forgotten what @#&$ even looks like….  Welcome to the layer cake son.

That’s my issue with this whole permits ripoff.
How many millions have they made from these permits and they can’t fix the Bribie entry or put some toilets at Cooloola.
Total rip off money grab..!!!!

Fraser I’m happy to pay for the permits, you can see where the money goes up there, but the rest of the parks forget it.

Straddy was the only reasonable permit price, now they’re going to shaft us with they one too.

There should be an “all parks” pass with a reduced price based on your post code.

Start showing us what our permit money is being spent on and we might start thinking about actually paying the ones for Cooloola.

When we were at Straddie at Easter the police and rangers had a roadblock doing breathtests and permit checks at the entrance to the Main Beach.

I've been checked once for a vehicle permit on Bribie but never Moreton, Fraser or Rainbow/Cooloola and Moreton has been a regular spot for 40 years. Up until the demise of the Combie Trader, we'd go 5-6 times a year.

Quite a few RBTs though.

Didn’t realise you could chose that date. Does it need to be within a maximum start period?
