Doran TPMS
« on: May 14, 2017, 05:05:41 PM »
I am in the market for a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System and had a look around on the forum and found an old thread on the Doran units. I thought it sounded like a good one so had a look into it. I tried to order one from the states for US$399 (about A$550) for the 6 transmitter model. The Yanks wouldn't sell me one, but referred me to their Aussie division who was more than happy to relieve me of A$960 for the same unit.

Is it just me, or do others feel like they are constantly getting reamed by Aussie on sellers of stuff made overseas. I don't mind a bit of mark up for the convenience of having a contact in Oz, but A$400 is just ridiculous. I don't get sucked in by 'it is the size of the market' argument either due to all the units being made at the one plant and therefore it is the one market, and the only difference should be transport, import duties and storage costs. Needless to say I am looking at other alternatives.

No wonder online sales are booming in this country, although as in my case they can still rort you.

FYI FWIW
I have the Inawise tpms and like it.  My sensors batteries have had finally gone flat and I tried to get some replacement sensors a month ago.  I was told by the tyre place I originally purchased them that they believed they'd gone out of business.   I then rang the contact number on the Inawise website and spoke with them.
They mentioned that there were issues with importing the product, so availability was doubtful in the short term.   I was offered a 'deal' on a set of 5 sensors that suited my 'display unit' but these had been on the shelf for 2 yrs so had limited usable life.
I believe that a new model might be on its way.  This may mean that I have to buy a whole new unit (i.e. replace the receiver/display init as well).  Not trying to can the Inawise unit but just advising you of what I found out. If anyone has more up-to-date info I'd appreciate it.

Strange comments by Innawise Swaggie.
I bought a kit about two months ago for 9 wheels delivered over night(couldn't believe it especially through Australia Post nowadays) from their factory down south to Bundaberg. No mention any trouble supply or otherwise. Fittedand took away for a 2 week trip worked fantastically. Particularly dropping and lifting pressures all the time.
Was the possible issue around the earlier model you bought or the different models they sell?

Thanks AK, that's good to know. They did ask for the serial number of my reciever.   I believe this was to check its suitability with the replacement sensors.
I'll contact them again but I think that I'm  going to replace the receiver unit as well.

Good to know they are still in business.

I recently had to buy a replacement sensor for one of our Inawise units and the new unit has a date on the box of 2/7/2015, so the story of sitting on the shelf for 2 yrs adds up. That was for a TPMS-201D-V2 unit. They are meant to have a 7 yr battery life so this one should last almost as long as my original sensors.

I run "PressurePro" TPMS http://tyrepressuremonitoring.com.au/

One of the best features is it's memory. When you reduce tyre pressures for sand/dirt etc, the unit readjusts it's base line.

ie: at road pressures say 42psi, the 1st warning is 12% loss of that value, if I reduce to 18psi and once the cap (I've got the external sensors) is removed for 30 seconds, it readjusts it's self so 1st warning becomes 12% of 18psi. No need to readjust the unit for your revised pressures.

AND, unlike other brands I've used, this one works and works well. Back up service is fantastic too.

Swaggie,
if you're going to replace the receiver unit have a look at the Innawise 203-V4 unit.
Don't know which receiver you have at the moment but this receiver can monitor up to about 12 tyres (just keep adding the additional sensors). I think it is 7 that come as standard. Depending on what tug you have this is not the specific 4x4 kit but in my opinion and from other forums/reading it is better for four wheel drive application. As Doc raised an important feature is the changing of pressures, the receiver picking this up and ease of use to achieve this. This unit adjusts pressure reading just by pressing a button twice and the new/various pressures are set as the base pressure for each tyre. So each tyre can have its own pressure automatically. A recent trip dropping and increasing pressure about 4 or 5 times a day was just made too easy just by pushing a button to record the new base pressures.

Doc and Allan, thanks for the further info.

Allan, on reading about internal transmitters as opposed to external ones, quite a few people have stated that they had their Inawise senders smashed by tyre fitters, have you found this an issue? Also, have you any idea as to the battery life, I take it that you need to swap the transmitter when it dies.

Traveller,
Haven't had mine on long enough and (touch wood) haven't had a puncture or need to change a tyre since fitting but will soon I suppose to rotate as I have 0 offset on the front and -55 offset on the rear to make the cruiser front and rear tracks the same. Will find out then.

It seems however not really a problem when you make it clear to the tyre fitters that the innawise are fitted and they will be up for it if they destroy one (politely of course)😀

Also, as I understand the earlier innawise (and others ??) actually had the valve stems incorporated as part of the internal sensors. Mine are an updated version which are actually strapped by a steel strap to the inside lowest part of the rim taking it away from the edge. When buying and talking to innawise I was told that even some of their authorised agents would not be aware of the new types (as was the case when talking to such an agent at Noosa a couple of months ago)

Horses for courses I suppose but I was happier putting on the internal ones with the intent to let the fitters know exactly where and what they are dealing with when the needs arises.
Cheers

No help at all on advice about tyre pressure monitoring systems, but you could always consider using a service like ShopMate (Australia Post believe it or not...) to get around the "we won't ship to Australia" problem. https://shopmate.auspost.com.au/our-services/how-shopmate-works

I personally haven't used it, but have been keeping it in mind for the next time I run into that issue...
