How many level ramps?
« on: October 05, 2012, 04:58:46 PM »
Just got back from first trip with CT.  I took two of the below ramps and didn't use them.  Both camp sites where level.  But I got thinking over a cold refreshing drink, "Do I need to carry two of them ramps or will one do?  Would save a bit of space if I only needed one."  As the CT is only single axle, I couldn't imagine a time when I would need two ramps?

What are the opinions of the seasoned travellers on myswag?

I just carry three bits of timber in the tool box.

Mainly, one for the jockey wheel and one to level and one in case i stuff it all up.

With the two rear jacks on the trailer, i turf the third one under when i'm ready to attach the tregg hitch to the jeep, just to make it a bit easier.

Thanks Jeepers.  I also carry some other supports for the rear jacks and the jockey wheel but I'm really looking for experiences with levelling ramps and if I need one or two.

Hi Mate, I take 2 with me (similar to yours). On a recent trip I used just one with a couple of chocks... Honestly they are light as and fit in the front boot on my jayco swan beside the gas bottle so not a hassle to carry both...

Like you mate, I got to thinking why would I need 2. So now only have 1 packed.

Still can't help feeling curious as to why they're sold in pair though? Obviously some intelligent reason beyond my ability!

x2

If the site isn't level, I try to nose up the hill, adjust with the jockey wheel, and use some timber if needed.

I wonder why you'd carry 2 of the rampy things, when you could carry a couple of the Max-Trax type things that could do 2 jobs....

(Note to self...........maybe get a couple of the Max-Trax type things......)

I just last weekend had to level the CT up on our 2nd use of it and of course it was just 1 side that needed leveling. luckily i brought heap of fire wood with and used some of that to level up.  so if your comming past hervey bay ill buy the second one of ya hahahahaha rather than buying 2 or ill make up a ramp as described in

Only ever need one to level it up.
They are probably sold as a pair to cater for the dual axle caravans where you'd use 2 on the same side

We only take 1 of the plastic ramps but take two plastic chocks. I've never needed more (I used to use a ramp I made from timber but the plastic ones are lighter so I upgraded to the plastic one).

I never thought of using the Max Trak for that purpose. Good idea GeoffA

I would've thought of it at some point, maybe a year or two down the track.....

Your right sir, they are marketed/called "caravan" levellers...

We take 2 of the older style ones , use one to level & the other [backwards] to chock the opposite side wheel so that the CT does not pivot & add strain to the jockey wheel.

These "caravan levellers" are sold in pairs because there are times when you need to raise the van a little even though the site is level.  At some van parks the annex slab is raised above the surrounding ground which alters the fit of annex walls, etc.  For simply "levelling" a second ramp is probably not needed but if you visit caravan parks that second one could be handy.

Thanks for all the info folks.  Exactly what I was looking for.

Honestly they are light as and fit in the front boot on my jayco swan beside the gas bottle so not a hassle to carry both...

Agree they are light but they do take up a lot of room if you don't have much room to start with.  I only have a little soft floor CT not a huge jayco starcruiser  ;D

x2 I wonder why you'd carry 2 of the rampy things, when you could carry a couple of the Max-Trax type things that could do 2 jobs....

Heck, now we're talking even bigger things to carry.  I can see the sense though if I was tackling some serious offroad stuff and had somewhere to carry the max-trax thingies.

Never thought of that.  Makes sense.  I have a soft floor CT so probably won't use a site with a slab too often.  I prefer the all grass camping sites.

Thanks but I already have the ramps, not looking for alternatives, just whether or not I need to carry one or two.

Thanks again for all the suggestions.

x 2 + a shovel for the opposite effect.
