Sorry to highjack the thread. I am a MICA Paramedic (intensive Care) in Melbourne. Yes Ambulance Victoria membership covers you Australia wide. Get covered despite what Private cover you have. If you end up in a Helicopter and are not covered your fee is metered on flying time (Av gas is expensive) and will be in the thousands (for example. a trip from the Vic high country back to a trauma centre in Melbourne). If you have a car crash in Vic it is covered by Vic TAC. Dont know what applies interstate.

We get pait nothing for what we do. I do things that only specialist doctors in hospital do(put people in an induced coma with drugs to sedate and paralyse them, diagnose Heart Attack etc). The more the community knows how little Paramedics and Nurses get paid the better. Carry on everyone . rant over

As Mace said above regarding his niece, whatever the wage, triple it.
+1.

Having had the honour to ride in the Fast Taxi a couple of times now, I can honestly say I would have paid triple the cost if it could have arrived even 30 seconds sooner.

I'm happy with the QLD scheme - as far as I'm concerned it should be rolled out nationally. I know that "user pays" has some benefits, but in cases like this it's simply reassuring not to have to consider cost when you're dialling 000. By that stage, you've already got enough on your mind.

re: wages - same goes for ER nurses and doctors. What they have to put up with every day of the week is crazy.

All the best Cruisindub - I hope it all works out for your good lady wife.

Thanks,
Matto :)

Here in NSW we have a reciprocal arrangement with other states....cost here for a Ambulance is from your location to the Local Emergency Dept.....transfer from that location if required is paid by that hospital as they are transferring you for a service that they cannot provide......

Most ppl have coverage in some form, pension, healthcare card or ambulance cover......found from experience the group of ppl that seam to get caught with high Ambulance bills are the young ppl when they leave home from under their parents form of Ambulance cover and neglect to take their own cover......

And as a NSW Ambulance Paramedic with a degree......don't get me started on our wages !!!!
