I have both, but if I had to choose then it would be the winch for all the reasons stated in the above posts

I can get in the poo easy enough with out lockers and most of the time lockers would only get me further into it, but use the winch to get my self out lots of times ;D
you can't polish a turd, BUT you can roll it in glitter...

How does a winch get you out of trouble if its on the front? Must pull you further in!
Needs to be on the back.   ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Hwmbo just picked up a 12,000lb winch from Deals Direct for a really good price, and as I was trolling the accessories i noticed a holder device that you plug into your tow bar that your winch sits so that you can relocate your winch to the back of the vehicle.  Noice.  OR you could do as my uncle did to his 6 wheeler Patrol, he mounted a winch on the front and one on the back.
