Has anyone used one of the swags that "Jungle reef Outdoors" advertise? They are advertised in that same catalogue with the Techni ice and Eskies. $259.00 for a double swag, 2150mm X 1450 X 800, delivered to your door. They say RRP is $695.00 Value for money they look very good.

Peter

No idea but unless it's a 100% Aussie brand then the rrp price sounds a little inflated to me.
In saying that for $260 delivered you can't go too wrong, particularly if you're trying the swag thing for the first time, at least you shouldn't lose too much if you end up selling it again.
I think the design should be your first consideration...like how it opens, if it has full mesh, if it's traditional style or more spacious and tent like.
We did that recently, brought a down under dingo double, happy with the quality and design but seems a tad "too cosy" in there for two people, definitely no room for .....your imagination.

Anaconda have a Burke & Wills swag on special at the moment. A bit more expensive but you know it's made in AU.

Go the Burke & Wills swag, don't have one myself, but have seen many up close and in use and I swore to myself next time I want a swag a Burke & Wills is what it would be no matter the price.

I've got my eye on a Mr Swagman Deluxe double

Thanks for the advice fellas.
Had a look at the Mr Swagman swags, no mention of the canvas being Australian on his site, Made in Aust from highest quality materials doesn't mean it is Aust canvas. I think if it was they would be boasting that fact. And $400.00 dearer.
I don't use a swag very often so I think I will go with the $259 option. I have a single flat swag for 20yrs, but need a bit of extra room these days, plus I may be able to convince the better half to join me as well.

Mr Swagman has 2 ranges, made in AU from AU canvas and made overseas from overseas canvas.
Quality Australian made Desert Sand coloured 15 ounce 100% cotton rip stop canvas.

The Australian designed, overseas manufactured, Mr Swagman All Terrain swags are extremely quick and easy to set up and pack away

I think GURich has a Dune swag that is good value

I've got an OzTrail swag that is very similar to the Dune, with three sets of poles. Was only $199, and for how often I use it has been brilliant.
-
Jolly swag matilda compact/biker. I would easy spend 60 + nights in it a year. Keep an eye on ebay and you will get one under $20

Any thoughts on canvas vs. pvc floor swags? I notice Burke & Wills do both. Also single or double?

I do have one I bought it when Anaconda had a $ale on it was pretty good value I think.
I had my first swag for 20 years that is used as roof bag now from time to time ;D

I made one a little while back, 12oz with PVC bottom - 1200mm wide for a bit of extra room. It's been working really well so far! I don't have a pic of it on its own.
-
Having never owned a swag I've always wondered about how good they are in the heat, the wet, against insects and for those of us that are slightly....shall we say.....claustophobic. :-[
Several mates rant and rave about them. This Burke & Wills jobby looks great and I reckon I'll check them out. There doesn't seem to be a store near Coffs Harbour that stocks them, so I guess I'll need to wait until I next visit Brisbane. :'(
Cheers - Wayne

There are swags and there are swags and then there is

I use swags more than my camper.
PVC Floors are better in wet conditions BUT canvas floors breath better.
I use PVC floor, on some occassion when sleeping in very cold conditions you need to make sure you air out any condensation under your matress.
Remember you will get what you pay for
I personally rate;
Down Under Swags - http://www.downunderswags.swag.com.au/
Southern Corss Swags - http://www.southerncrosscanvas.com.au/swags/dome-swags/
-
i've had one of these swags for years, top quality, nothing to go wrong with them (no zips, no poles)
http://www.saulswags.com.au/Pages/product.htm
-
Im with alnjan, we have a Ultima king and its comfy and quick to set up no cliping poles around and its made 100% local. You can sleep under the mesh
cover or throw the canvas cover sheet over if its cold or raining
-
Been look'n at swag's myself and wondering if anyone has a outback canvas swag, they seem to look allright and nice and close to home.
-
I've had my new Burke & Wills Coolabah outside all week hosing it down and letting it dry out. Had a good rainstorm the other day and not a drop inside so it is well and truly seasoned now.
My question is what do you use as bedding inside the swag? I've got a down sleeping bag and silk liner and I was just going to use that. Any issues with this idea?

Silk mate thats a bit flash ;D My old swag could have set itself up the dog wouldn't even go near it ;D
I just use a sleeping bag and a pillow. I leave it in there all the time, I don't take the sleeping bag out, yeah I know you should but I just never have. In my camper I have a $5 polar fleece blanket that I sit on the doonah to keep the condensation off during winter I might grab another one for the swag too.

I've found Aussie Swags really, really good and I highly recommend them. Come larger than double as standard ... many, many extra's. Smidge more expensive than all those mentioned, but benefits outway the expense.
Aussie Swag (http://aussieswag.com.au/) :cup: ;D
Kit_e

Hahahaha, good one kit_e, we use a T van usually but sometimes a swag can be handy.

Spent yesterday traveling between the three big name camping store's check'n price's in preperation to look for a bargin at caravan and camping show on monday. Had time to check outback canvas for a swag, not a bad look'n swag , but not quite what i'm look'n for. The best one i have so far found come's from SA have spoke'n to this bloke John Wilsher and check'd out his gear and it look's top's. The price plus delivery is not much dearer than buying a local one, but there seem's to be a fare bit of differance in quality.

CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP!!!!!

I picked up a new Burke & Wills swag earlier in the week and so far, the quality looks great. It still needs more hosing off, though with possibly a wet weekend on the way, nature might do that for me.
-
Not a real good photo. But I'm sure they got enough water. 8)
-
Im pretty happy with my Outback Swag from Anaconda, originally picked it up for $210 on special down from just under $400
I know the quality isnt as good as a Burke n Wills but i dont Swag every weekend ;D

FWIW I recommend a cheap swag if it's your first as they're not for everyone. A mate of mine used one for the first time a few weeks ago and said he probably won't use it again. Felt a bit claustrophobic apparently but stupidly also complained he couldn't sit up without opening it.
I have a Burke and Wills Simpson now which I think is their top of the line. Lots of room (I'm a restless sleeper) plenty of ventilation options and thick matress. The only down side is once you add your bedding (especially blankets for winter) it's definitely not small, in fact it won't fit in my SWB fourbie so has to be carried on the roof.

That's the same one that I have; in their "redrock" colour.

Tell him to drink about 20 JD's before he hops in and he will sleep like a baby ;)
-
He doesn't drink. At all. Guess who the permanent designated driver is

got one of jim allen@sons swags, quality materials and the bloke who designed them is a deer stalker. so they are reasonsbly light, very waterproof and they pack up to reasonable size.good bit of gear in my opinion cheers@beers Graham
-
oops ,they are about $250.00 for a single and they are south rd moorabbin, cheers Graham

I use a Southern Cross Canvas Dome swag. I use it for work regularly (3-4 times a month) and find it excellent. Aussie WCT canvas all Aussie made in Vic, plenty of room and ventilation. As you can see from the pic, now that I am getting a bit older (and softer) I set it up on a stretcher. Its so much easier to get in and out of this way and you can sit up to put your boots on etc.

Jas

what work do you do that means you get in a swag 3-4 times a month?
i'm currently drooling over a new swag i'm keen to get, my mattress died in mine, and i'm looking for a bit more room in a swag, so this is my pick.. http://www.ozwild.com.au/index.php?option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=197&vmcchk=1&Itemid=197

That Oz wild one looks pretty sweet. AND with a fly!
My 0.02: I have a Burke and Wills Simpson, Red Rock flavour. I LOVE IT! AND, to my delightful surprise, it comes with an insulated bottle holder so you can take a long-neck to bed with you! Mr B and Mr W have thought of everythink!
BTW, the cheapest I found it was outdoorsonline Tony was very helpful and accommodating, have a look at their gear.

I am a Fisheries Officer mate so I get to see a fair chunk of inland NSW (My Zone looks after 1/2 of inland NSW). That swag looks Great also. I prefer side entry to Top or end entry. Also on the southern cross it is nice and high. Both sides unzip to the ground and have mesh in them and both ends have windows and vents. So in summer it essentially a big mozzie tent with heaps of ventilation.

Second vote for the Southern Cross dome swag.
Mines the green version and had it for years. Never leave home without it. Absolutely love it!!
-
Any idea how much those Southern Cross swags are worth, roughly?
Cheers Jacko
-
Hope you're sitting down: Single is $690.
-
Thanks for the info POD, yeah I know their stuff is expensive as I have a Southern Cross Ultimate Trekker double ender tent and while it's alot of money it is exceptional quality and will probably outlast me!
Cheers Jacko
-
Can get the Southern Cross cheaper at shows. But they are 100% worth it. Never regretted spending the extra in one.
Goodluck either way you go.
-
3rd vote for the Southern Cross Swags. Its next on my list.
Hey Jas, you have a very envious job mate.
Your Southern Cross swag looks like you've had it for a number of years, the'v refined the design a bit.
Interesting to see the boys at Ultimate Campers making basically the same design at $600.00 -

Thanks Tosion, it is not a bad job mate. The patrolling/travelling part is great its all the other stuff you could live without. Like most jobs I guess.
I have gone through a few different swags over the 17 years I have been doing the job, I have used Burke and wills, Jolly, Down under to name a few, the Southern Cross is the best one to date. We tend to wear them out over 5 years or so getting bashed around in the back of the vehicles. We always look at what is about and aim at better features each time we replace them.

I'm in the market for a first swag and my ears (eyes, if I'm reading??) pricked up when people mentioned the dune swag earlier.
Has anyone had any major problems with them. I realise they're on the cheap import end of the market but I'd only be using it a few times a year. Anaconda adventure club price is $99 at the mo, so I'm very tempted to just suck it and see but thought i'd ask a few questions if it will still save me the $'s.
GUrich, without sounding suss or rude  are you big/tall? I'm 6'5 and solidly built (hence the username ;D) and I'm curious to know if I'd fit in one.
Cheers!

At that height I would be test driving one in the shop to make sure you fit, I am just over the 6' mark and it feels cosy in mine, it is a different brand though

Ive been looking for a swag to fit me also. Being big lad im going to need more room also. I think ive narrowed it down to the True Blue XXL dome jobby. They are 2.3 meters long which is quite a bit more than any others I have looked at. Priced at $270 on ebay at the moment
-
Also just found a Ray's Outdoors/Wild Country "Bluegum" swag that is the same style as the Dune Stockton (any many others) but with slightly larger dimensions. Anyone got one or know anything about them? Might give it a go as I can get staff discount from my brother. Plus, he's the same height and can test it for me at work  :cup:
Cheers!
