Hi folks
Started to look at ride on mowers - at the moment I like the John Deere but $$$.
Will also be looking at the Toro zero turns this weekend.
Any advice ?
-
I have a greenfield ride on, cox ride on and just go a toro zero turn. Its great, I never get on it and the missus mows...
-
I have a Husky 48" Cut, 21hp "Lawn Tractor" and it's great - really quick too. I've had it for about 5 years now, bought it new and it has done everything from fetching the mail to towing campers around the property, firewood runs etc.
It's a little overkill for the yard now that we're in suburbia, but it's damn fast!
I've been really happy with it's performance and reliability.
-
Another vote for the Toros. We've got a 50" Toro which over halved the mow time for our place, after using an old Rover Rancher for years.
Fast, manoeuvrable & fun.

What size yard? Size of deck?
Do you want to catch the grass? Catcher, mulcher or side chute?
Hilly or flat yard? 4wd or 2wd?
Do you have lots of trees to mow around? Zero turn or standard?
Do you want to tow anything with it or use other attchments or just mow?
What type of grass and how often will it get mowed? IE foot high Cooch grass or 4 foot high Green panic. What size engine ;D
I've owned a husky 42inch deck and now own a John Deer L111 42inch cut for mowing 4000m2 on flat ground with a few trees. Both good units. Not sure on the latest models though.
Maybe price some spares while your getting prices. Oil filter, air filter, blades...
Cheers

I have an "old skool" cox mower. 28 inch cut 12 hp engine. Simple and easy to fix. I believe the new cox mowers are just as simple ....
lets face it for the price of some of the other mowers you could pay to get someone to mow it! lol
Cheers Chippy :D
-
I have a John Deere very happy with it ,I like the fact I could service it and still keep warranty as long as I have recipts for buying the service kit.
Paid about 3.5 k from memory had it for 5 years and no probs very easy to service /maintain.
My best mate has a toro and so does my next door neighbour. they are both very happy with thier machines as well. I went JD for the 42" cutter deck as toro was only 38" at the time. Might be different now.
Also towball on rear has been handy.
I am no mower expert but I like it.... for interest sake of about 10 neighbours I know there are 6 xJD's 2x toro 1x husquvarna 1x MTD.
Jetcrew :D :D
-
My John Deer is really easy to service and they have great service kits. That reminds me i should go stock up on some spares myself because the price of the dollar has brought the price down a fair bit. Saved about $8 on a set of blades this week from last years prices. Might go get another set and a service kit or two ;D
-
I have a husky with a 36in cut
we have 2 acres it suits us fine
i sit back & relax while mowing & have a few cans if the mower is to big u will not have a enough time to have a few lol lol
-
Just got a new Toro with the 38'' deck and its great. The inlaws bought it for me as a bit of a house warming for my new place...bless em'
They have had 2 Toros' and just upgraded to the new bigger Husqy and so far are wrapt with it.

Lots of (good) questions there Geoff.
Block of land is 1 Acre which is all flat - quite a few trees to go around. Not much lawn to speak of now as the grass and weeds have truly taken over. We have just bought the house which has not been lived in since March hence the poor state of the lawn.
I would be happy to have a mulching kit on the mower and perhaps if possible tow a small trailer around the paddock - although not a necessity.
The JD I was looking at is pretty close in price to the Toro zero turn - around $5-6K.
-
I have a john deere z 445.
Awesome, mowing is so much quicker, what i cant mow, i roundup.
You can mow right around a can on the ground.
Love it, Best value out of the zero turns.
V8ute.

Iseki diesel lawn tractor here...but if you're on flat land, the diesel might be over kill. It was bought to go up and down steep and wet hills...still haven't got it up over the levy bank yet.
The Huskie that the neighbours have is a great unit with a mulch deck...but the John Deere rules supreme in the country as the ride on for choice.
If you were talking racing ride on lawn mowers, I could probably tell you that the preferred one there seems to be the Cox as a modified mower, followed by the John Deere! ;D

x2 for the Husky, had it about 18 months now and love it.
One thing i noticed whilst looking, I borrowed a mates greenfield for a month or so, however being tall it was cramped and uncomfortable to drive. I think it did do a nicer cut than the husky though, but I think that all single blade jobbies do a better jo than the twin blade units.
Take all the ones you are looking at for a drive and see what "fits" best. the thing that swayed me from the JD was that there was a button on the dash that you had to press to drive in reverse with the blades running, with the husky it is a different key position so once it is set it is done.
-
Is this the new place in Bundy, I am sure you will now have plenty of time to use a push mower and plus it will help you de-stress :D

A Cox.
As strong as an Ox.
Have an Orion Cox, Owned it some ten years now, brought it second hand for 1500 buck. Has a 48" cutting deck. On it's third motor now, first one throw a leg out of bed, the second would drain fuel into the barrel and sump if the tap wasn't turned off, which screwed the bore, blow smoke like an old steam train.
Another Briggs in her now, 13hp brand new off eBay 900 bucks delivered.
New drive cone & axle, bearings, and chain drive sprocket, just the other day, 400 bucks worth.
Owes us about 5K, now having said that, we mow about 5 acres with it.
The three turner's can't keep the grass down at the peak of summer if we've had good rain.
Pretty happy with the old girl. Easy to fix, does a lot of work.

See, that's where you guys are going wrong, what's wrong with having a few ales while mowing, Hey?
It takes you an hour and a half to mow just over an acre, Technically not an acre, you have a house and a shed and a big drive way on it. I can do 5 acres in just on 3 1/2 hours.
Ya gotta get a bigger cut.
A John Deer is just an over priced Green Field (http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-laughing011.gif) (http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys.php)

I have had a Greenfield for 10 years now. (Australian made! :cup:) It is all steel construction and that helps when you accidently hit trees etc. Mine is worked very hard, especially when we arrive home after a trip away. The only problem I have had with it is just recently. The solenoid is playing up. I will try to take it apart and clean it. Mind you a new one is only about $28. I also have fitted 4 blades rather than having the standard 2. Works a lot better and a set of blades is only about $15. They seem to last a lot longer. Kevin
-
I'm with the COX mob on this one, aussie built, bomb proof, and simple to maintain, and dose a good job on an average acre
-
flying the John Deere flag here. 110 model with the auto drive( no belts or friction plates to wear out)42 inch cut and a stubbie holder as standard! ( get that up ya Jon Kenny Cox ) ;D
had it about 6 or so years with no warranty work done on it and still going strong.it mows ans acre block once or twice a week and even has the SWMBO using it :D
ya gotta love ya Deere John 8)

Well he decided when he was offered a really good deal on a Rover Cobra Zero turn with 52" cut and 23hp kawasaki motor, with rops and beer holder (he doesnt drink) we could pension the old Rover Rancher off. I put up a bit of an argument, cause the Rancher and I were good mates. We bought the Rancher second hand about 12 years ago when we purchased our 1.2acres on the edge of town. She and I did a fair bit of work, from blazing trails through 6foot high grass so as to make fences for horse paddocks, and obligatory weekends at the pony club mowing the arena (she was the fastest), and then we bought 111acres out of town, and she still went strong. Anyway he brought the new mower home, I dont think he gets to ride it as much as i do, cause i can leave work at 4.30pm (20 min drive), come home and whip the 2 acres and drive way into shape before he arrives from work to make the coffee at 10min to 6. It is definetly a fast machine, I keep the seat belt done up at all times and give everything a one foot berth, so I dont hit it and make sure I wear a good sports bra. So far the Cobra is pretty good and he can service it as well. cheers rellbell

Wouldn't go past a Toro I have owed 2 both Zero turn use it every day with my work and they don't miss a beat.
Go and have a look at the G3 can't go wrong $15000.

I was in the same position last year......My parents have a 1.5 acre property and my father is in a wheel chair and unable to look after the property any longer....they used to have a toro wheelhorse with a 30in cut that was 12 yrs plus old that was a real pain to use....Would take just under 2 hours to cut 1.25 arces grass on a slight slope.
Well I lost my temper last year after it broke down again one Satuday afternoon and drove down to the mower shop with the trailer connected. I ended up with a Poulen mower......Hydro drive 42in cut 18HP Brigs motor etc etc....$2500 and it now takes me 45 mins to cut and it does a fine job of it.....should have done it years ago......Poulen is supposedly made by Husvana?? but I have had it 18mths and not had a single problem with it....it is great mower for the $$$$ and I have not regretted the purchase....
-
I has a John Deere LT160 for about 5 yrs and it never missed a beat, and i used for more than mowing made a tipping trailer for it and carted everything around the 2.5 acres with it, the block was rather slanted as well in sections.

Rellbell I do hope you are wearing a hat ,earmuffs, sunglasses & sencable shoes when mowing ,,uuuuuuuummmm that's all you really need . Ohhh year PM me the address as I could pop over & supervise , OH&S type of thing you know .
This thread is like tojo/pootral it really doesn't matter what you use as long as it gets the jobs done .
As they go your only cutting 25 to 30 times a year on your patch, so keep it clean , blades sharp, service up & fuel fresh . Enjoy
ps , The nine fingered mower man says "don't drink & cut " OH&S wont be happy

BLOODY HELL....
Murphy and his mate ...
You post up about how you have never had a problem with your mower ,and then just to make a liar out of you SHE YES SHE decides to burn the starter motor out and leave you with a broken heart and grass in need of mowing......started one minute woulkd not throw over the next tried everything and all I ended with was a cloud of smoke and a really bad smell.
So Off to find a Briggs and stratton starter motor part 693 551 aparentley this is the one for my JD with Briggs motor will post up where/who was the cheapest around... evilbay has em for abot $120. but aviod that like the plauge..

My 25yo+ Deutcher bit the dust. It took anything up to five hours to manicure our 2.5 acres with it. I looked at them all for a replacement and bought a new 19.5hp. Yellow Greenfield with a briggs and stratton motor.
The deciding factor, I can service it it myself. It comes with a a very.very comprehensive service book. A diff lock easy on easy and easy off, an alloy deck that spits the clippings out or an easily fitted mulching plug that blanks of the grass exit hole. Has four separate single kick back blades not the single bar type that costs an arm and a leg. Can easily spray the drive chain with chain lube. Has three grease points. Adjustable and very comfortable seat. An engine clock. And best of all has a has a catcher that you don't have to get of the machine to empty. All pulley replacment bearings etc. can be bought at your local bearing shop. My son inlaws husky has just had the electronic blade engagement mechanism fail and cost $$$$$$,
It is so fast I can cut the grass in half the time (2.5 hrs.)
Go and have a look at one.
Stan

Beware of belt drive rideons where the belt twist and turns under the seat, good when new, not so good later and quite had to change.. ???
-
Ride on now fixed. It was the Briggs and stratton starter and solinoid that went. $22 for the solinoid and $220 for the starter :'(
Funny thing John Deere were cheaper on the briggs parts than Briggs ???
so thats that

Funniest thing since writing to tell about the dust. Had big rain on Saturday arvo, had to wade through ankle deep water and tip out 5 litres of water from the 10ltr horse feed bucket. Now the weeds are poking there heads up, cant wait for Wednesday arvo to get the Cobra out and sort them out. Woo hoo cheers Rellbell

Hmmm, We had a 86 VL Turbo, the hose that runs from the top of the rocker cover to the injector box has two different size ends.
The Holden dealer was out of stock.
From the Holden dealer it was $24.95 from the Nissan dealer 45 k's away Grafton it was $54.95.
So I order one from the Holden dealer, over night it came from the Grafton Nissan dealer, had it for $24.95 and it saved me a 90k trip.
Go figure? (http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-confused013.gif) (http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys.php)

I heard about a bloke thats in more strife than the early settlers . His SWMBO complained about the heat of the day & mowing on the ride on , so next birthday she got a set of driving lights so she could mow at night . BRAVE MAN , even I am not that silly to try that , well I might think about it :D
-
Most of your original tractor ride ons for domestic work, (under 2 hectres) are made by a handful of manufacturers, the Australian Cox and Greenfields make there own, Rover, they use to be good, but they moved over to the Murray manufactured stuff, and basically its crap. Cox and Greenfield are good, spare parts are plentiful and their drive mechanism is easy and inexpensive to maintain.
Then you move into the ZTR domestic mowers, that is a different ball game and it can be expensive in the long run if you get a dud,the oil pressure grear boxes alone cost about $1000 each, plus fitting. Why the mower blokes are pushing them is that they get higher retail margins on them.
A good make 48" or 52" deck ZTR will cost you about between $11000 - $16000, there are cheaper stuff around, the second hand market is good, but check the running hours, but if you are on acreage and the terrain is marginal....its best to go for quality. This means, seperate oil pump and wheel motors on independant oil pressure lines, so if you damage a oil line, the whole machine will not lose oil and you can still limp home. In having the wheel motor and oil pump in one housing, hit a rock and damage the gearbox, you take out both in one hit $$$$$$$.
There are smaller ZTR's on the market at a smaller price...thinner decks and marginal drive systems..
Good luck treaing through the Ride on mower mine field

OH dear the Rancher bit the dust. The Nephew came out to visit and uncle brought the old Rover Rancher and started her up. Nephew was having a lovely time, till red decided to seize. Had to push it back into the shed. Bugger.

Had a Murray 12 IC with 38" cut for 17 years now, cost $2100 brand new. Cuts a bit under 1.5 acres each time. 4 sets of blades, 3 batteries, lots of flat tyres from blackberry bushes, two belts (another due very soon), and just this season a new starter cog and drive plate kit. Never been properly serviced just oil kept up and hosed down after each mow. Tows around a small home made trailer carting firewood and any other rubbish as well. My front 2/3 acre is reasonably steep so it does do some work carting my bulk about.
Not bad for rubbish I reckon.
-
Moved to a block just over a year ago, about 1.2 acres. I bought a Hustler Mini Fastrack, 42 inch zero turn. It is awesome. The cutting time is just over an hour, compared to amost 2.5 hours with my Dad's standard lawn trailer. It was a bit more than I wanted to spend, was close to $8K, but is great in the tight stuff. I have a lot of trees to negotiate.
Cheers.
-
Check out Cox's website...doing interest free deals at the moment through authorised dealers...with the drought breaking, this deal will not be around for too long.
-
I've got 2 acres, sloping like no ones business, lots of trees and other obstacles - flying fox, cubby house etc. I had a JD 48" deck and gave it a hard time. Poor thing stood up to everything and then some. Its gone to mower heaven now (I pay a bloke to mow the back, and the front get push mowed) but I would buy a JD again for sure.

I have an MTD yardman 16hp 42" cut. Had it for a few years now - only issue I had was flat battery - which was my fault for using it to run my 12v air compressor alll teh time
-
We had a Snapper 61" Pro at work as a sub from the dealer, 28hp vanguard motor, the mowing deck was a delight, clean simple lines, good belt system, hard cased spindles, discharge was excellent in medium 150mm grass and very good for 200 to 300mm height grass.
Motor works well in heavy going, low end rev torque is pretty goood considering it is an unleaded motor.
Price about $10k..GST exempt for the price and work ability...value about 8 out of 10.

Our toro just died :-( we are on 5 acres but 4 acres is bush only about 1 acre of lawn (although we use to mow the firebreak as well) it's pretty flat, we were into commercial lawn mowing 15 years ago (back then the JD deck was fragile when left in the hand of employees) never had a cox after the JD went to small tractors however want something that collects as well. Suggestions please.
Cheers

Depending on your budget, at the low range a JD with catcher system, there're cheap, but they do the job. We had a catcher version for work, lasted 12 months, just could'nt handle the work and the different opperators...typical local government parks and gardens department.
If you have a look at a mag at the moment which comes out with adds for second hand commercial mowers, you may pick up a bargin.
We have a Walkerwww.walkermowers.com.au/ (http://www.walkermowers.com.au/) for work and we use it for the Cemeteries...not bad, good pick up in dry and wet grass, easy reg maintenance locations, but it will set you back 15K, but if you can pick up a second hand job with good hours and maintanence, you never know, you can get extras like a chipper and such.
Its horses for course, have you looked at a Mulching deck option?
Anyway check this site or similar...you never know?www.hewlettequipment.com.au/used.htm (http://www.hewlettequipment.com.au/used.htm)

they are good mowers

My sons have a mowing/ gardening business and are a couple of the keenest, hardest workers around ( for young guys that is) but they treat their gear ( mowers & powered equipt) like an ex-girl friend .... jobs done move on to the next...... and don't worry about too much fuss after cutting the grass. They have a Honda push mowers ( wouldn't touch a Toro compared to them) Walker zero turn and a 4wd Kubota out front mower, both Diesel powered run all day on 1/4 to 1/2 tank, at present have over 2000 hrs on each and what they put them through is tough in anyones language...lucky i'm a tad mechanical, for what you want i'd go a Toro or JD zero turn as i have been told the pricing is pretty good lately or alternately look at the trading papers and go for a 2nd hand Kubota or JD they will last you a life time if you keep the servicing done ( oils a cheap expense for any mech equipt) our next will be a lever steered Kubota for sure, test ride to be sure it suits your needs and pocket. keep on mowin :D :D

OH dear the Rancher bit the dust. The Nephew came out to visit and uncle brought the old Rover Rancher and started her up. Nephew was having a lovely time, till red decided to seize. Had to push it back into the shed. Bugger.
Update on the rancher, Tony sold it off to a fella up the road for nix (i reckon) as tony said he didnt have the time to fix it. Anyways the fella had a look and found that the cog in the starter motor had karked it again. We had forgotten that had happened once before. Oh well his gain. I really didnt have a shed spot for it anyways.
