Title: Bathurst 2015
Post by: D4D on October 04, 2015, 06:55:48 AM
The footy is over so now it's time to get down to business. One more week to go and the mountain will come alive!

Bird - yes I know it's taxi racing and the race cars do not resemble a road going car, blah blah blah.

It is still an engineering feat to get to the end of the race, and the mountain always throws in a few twists and turns.

Even Jayco is getting in on the act http://www.v8supercars.com.au/news/championship/retro-class-for-kelly-brothers-bathurst-road-trip (http://www.v8supercars.com.au/news/championship/retro-class-for-kelly-brothers-bathurst-road-trip)

Going on form, it's hard to go past one of the Prodrive FG-X's.  I'd love to see Reynolds and Canto take the flag.  Would be great to see Canto win and also give Prodrive/FPR a hat trick with all 3 cars.

and the Merc's finally get a decent sponsor and decent looking livery.

Still love the Annual Bathurst Race regardless of the cars that are racing these days although i still miss the old muscle cars.
We had a good win over Eng at the RWC this morning and have the NRL Grand Final this arvo. All is good. :cup: :cup:

Interested to see how the all girl team goes!

I do agree that the Prodrive team is definitely going well, but then there is the olds and bolds that could easily win! Lowndes has been at the end of this race more than one time whilst other holdens are already tucked into bed!

Not sure if that is just for bikes, as it skips the mountain all together........

The last time I was in Bathurst for the race was about 15 or 20 years ago. McPhillamy Park was always a bit of a mad area. The photo below is a tame one compared to some of the things that went on. Not long after that shot was taken, a group of guys (all wearing viking helmets) drove down in a purpose built car that looked straight out of mad max and all holding sledge hammers and then proceeded to overturn a stranded car before laying waste to it with the sledge hammers and then setting it on fire. It was pretty common to see the police roll through the area in their hundreds and then beat a hasty retreat as they got pelted with anything people were holding. I was standing around the donut ring one day watching a car do donuts and it strayed too close to the people watching it. A drunk guy holding a beer in one hand had the beer knocked out of his hand by the rear end of the car as it swung past him at a great rate of knots. He laughed, shook his hand and grabbed another beer

I heard things had been cleaned up a lot since those days and I am planning a trip down there in 2016 with my aging father who first brought me down there when I was 8 years old. 36 years later I am bringing him down to relive some memories so I am hoping it has been cleaned up somewhat as being on the set of Mad Max every day isn't my thing any more

I'm going to watch the whole race on TV,  you miss so much at the track, but if I lived close , sat top ten shootout would be good to watch.

I like watching the touring car masters and the shootout is good as well.

Just no mojo for any of it this year. Must be getting older, cars and modifying them were my life as a young fella. It sh!ts me to have to change the oil these days.

Is it not on free to air? I have fox but no sports channels. I had a free trial during the clipsal 500 and the coverage was great plus being able to watch the other categories you don't normally see made it even better.

That's got to be up there amongst the biggest hits at Bathurst. Looks like Chaz has a broken leg and wrist for starters.
There goes his chance at the championship this year. Wishing the young fella well and speedy recovery.

It's getting close to 20 years since I was last at Bathurst too. Camping up on the mountain was certainly an eye opener. Scariest camping experience ever :o

Lucky the racing was worth it. There's nothing like the roar of a big V8  :cup:

Chaz accident started out looking so minor, then went pear shaped so quickly, the incar footage shows the hit on the gear stick.

Tesla should enter the gen2 and use a big stereo to achieve the minimum noise levels.  Wouldn't do well at Bathurst with long straights though

Honest mistake

“I'm really sorry for the team as it was my error that put us out and also destroyed a car,” Mostert said in a statement released from his Prodrive Racing Australia team late last night.

“I just lost my racing line due to a bit of sun glare and glanced the wall. From there I was a passenger and took some pretty big hits.”

I agree! But on Telstra TBox, the channel you are watching is put in a small box in the lower corner  and the ads are playing in the back ground! Work that out!

Would be better if they just played the add at the bottom of the screen!!

Esky iced and packed waiting at the door  for a 7am pick up.
Off to the bakers to pick up the pre ordered bread and rolls. 7.30am can in hand at a mates place for the traditional bacon, egg and black label Beam breakfast.
Then light the spit and kick back for 10+ hours of mayhem with 40 odd blokes....

From what I understand, in F1 cars they use a ZYLON  synthetic rope [ 5000kg breaking strain] it attaches to the chassis and around a flange on the back of the brake disc hub / some are fitted to the stub axle spindle.. Nascar etc use it too / monster trucks etc ..
pic is of a monster truck set up for a better veiw.
Google, Race car  wheel tethers ..

Yep, race pace is the main factor with TV wanting it to finish just before the nightly news. Maybe they should make it the Bathurst 1200.
My main beef with TV is they way they interrupt the shootout with add breaks. When you get rain it handicaps the faster cars

Only the second time in about the last twenty years I have not been on the mountain for the race, it just ain't the same sitting at home. Lot more comfortable tho
Porsches are good just before the race, means you can watch the masters then go back to camp and have a feed before going over to the track for the start of the race

I think it was Roland Dane chatting to Whincup and pointing out the error of his ways down there at Bathurst.

The Lowndes 888 car has been impounded.

Everyone is using a 650HP supercar engine, but 888 was running a 3.7 litre V6 Jeep engine and that's just not fair to the others.  ;D

Just curious if others recon Lowndes is better than Brock? I know he is yet to overtake Brock's 9 wins at the mountain but he has overtaken his podiums. I don't think anyone will pass 9 wins as I think the competition is closer than ever but Lowndes is always at pointy end at the right time.

Lowndes is a great driver with great car control, but Brock did it in cars that handled like bowls of jelly. Different era, different machines but any way you look at it they are/were both bloody awesome to watch

He won about 6 in his own car. They changed the rules to stop his car-hopping.

Brock was an excellent driver, but he had a very un-savoury checkered history off the track.

No rose colored glasses here Geoff,  I worked on one of his cars when he was with Gown Hindhaugh and got to see quite a bit of him at the time, so knew what he was like off the track but I was talking about him as a steerer , not him as a person, as said earlier different  era and hard to compare

How things have changed.

Note the lack of fencing...

Actually, the Ford had not broken down.  It had a flat tyre.  In those days, they were standard production cars and had to carry the spare, jack etc in the boot.

From memory, the Ford was leading with about 11 laps to go.

I like how the marshal just wanders down and they have a chat as the driver changes the wheel.

Right as to year and position.... :cup:

1968 Bathurst, top of the mountain, 24D is Jim Palmer, who came 2nd !

1st was Bruce McPhee !  BTW, he did a lap record of 2.56  !!

Another bit of trivia, Bruce McPhee ran buffed down radials ( Michelin ) compared to race tyres of all the others, because they lasted longer...

Still remember going for a ride with him in an army cargo carrier in the local river approx 45yrs ago !

A bit OT but Fabs is confirmed at DJR next year with Pye. Ambrose must be done with full time driving. Its not like he needs the money and after 10 years in the US he could do with a rest from it.

Yep the XT falcon was,

My dad had a ZB Fairlane , 6 cyl with a few options not ever listed....he wanted a GT but with 4 of us snotters he needed a front bench seat.

BUT, Ford only ever made 2 good cars.....the GTHO and the 68/69 Mustang fastback 390.......NOT the XT.

5 if you consider the "1.5" the model everyone has chosen to forget about, being a lemon and all  ;D

Ford finally got it right when they built the Cobra.  :D
