Title: Washing your CT
Post by: Camping Grant on May 31, 2015, 12:31:15 PM
How many of you actually wash your CT (like you would wash a car)?

Every time we go away, it's washed and chamois dry before it goes back in the garage. I think we clean it more than our Prado, lol.

It gets a wash if it's been up the beach or on a dirty dusty track, but if it's good weather and we take it up the highway to a holiday park then usually don't bother.

I admire your dedication and I'd like to think I'd do that but I probably won't.
Mines hard sided and topped and I intend to wash it as required but if i don't plan on using it for a while I might wip the wheels off if only as an anti theft measure

Always wash & chamois the CT after each trip. Sometimes I have been know to use a bit of Tyre shine on the tyres as well.

I wash mine when its really dirty ... but I'm always cautious of not putting too much water on the travel cover as I don't really trust it to keep water out ...

Same as above, but if I've been on the beach for a week I've even been know to empty out the toolbox and trailer and clean all the sand out of them.

As above, if it is really dusty, muddy or been on the beach I will just stop at a cash wash and give it a high pressure rinse on the way home. Haven't used soap/carwash on it, probably never will haha!

Only ever wash the trailer after coming back from the beach, but ALWAYS set up and wash the canvas and mop the floor after each trip.

As for tyre shine, that crap belongs in the bin.  ;D

Always pressure wash after short trips.

Just finished an 8 week trip that included red dust and sand.

Everything emptied out of every storage nook and cranny, vacuumed, stainless steel bits cleaned and polished, canvas brushed down and bird droppings hand scrubbed and removed.  Then the real work began.

Wheels off, pressure washed, truck wash used, another pressure wash, rust and stain remover (diluted phosphoric acid) used on all gal surfaces, pressure washed again.  Finally hand washed and polished, tyre shine on tyres and mud flaps and black plasticy bits.

Kamper looks great and is ready for another adventure.  I don't consider myself anal, rather a good clean is part of the ongoing maintenance of the Kamper.

Another vote for taking it to the car wash for a soap and pressure spray after a really long or dirty trip. And probably a fairly thorough inside clean.    Otherwise just put it away ready for next time.

Think you forgot to mention pulling it out every Sunday with the Prado and Hilux on the front lawn for a quick buff and show n shine for the neighbours!

Usually give it a clean before it goes in the shed, otherwise a quick one before we take it away.

Haven't washed it yet in over 2 years.  Hasn't been to the beach, and not on dusty roads.  I do open it at home and clean off bird poo, sweep inside etc.    It does have a bit of road grime but I only ever notice it after packing it away, and if I wash it I would have to open and dry again, I might clean it before the next trip....  what I might do and what happens are likely to be completely different.

I wash ours after most trips unless I know there is a short stay between. It even gets washed during trips sometimes  ;D

Just a quick question for you...what more would you need to do before you'd classify it as being anal out of curiosity?...lol
Not having a go at you by the way, just having a friendly dig. Good on you for looking after your gear like you do, i couldn't be bothered going to that effort of cleaning something myself

Myswag could coin the phrase "Anally Clean" perhaps?

I think I might have a touch of the OCD also.  I always set mine up in the driveway and wash it like I do a boat, lots of water and soap using a foam gun. I found a really good mop like thing from supercheap on an extendible pole for doing the canvas.  After I've chamiosed it down and it's all dry I go to town with Inox and spray every bit of metal I can find.

If I've been on the beach I usually degrease the springs etc so no sand sticks to them.

And then a once a year I give it a wax using Meguiars RV wax.

To be Anal I'd do that after every trip, short or long.

I bought the Kamper second hand, the previous owners hadn't bothered to keep it "clean", so red stains on all the unpainted surfaces and they couldn't sell it, was on the market for around 6 months.  When I had a look at it I was happy that the canvas was "as new" and all the Kamper really needed was a good detail, I got it for around $5k less than they where going for at the time.  So the lesson here is a bit of time spent cleaning and maintaining will pay off come sale time :-)

PS That Rust and Stain Remover stuff is the ducks nuts for getting red stains off gal, spray it on, leave for a couple of minutes and hose it off, done.
