Ok, we've just come home from a 2 week holiday in Brisbane with the camper trailer. The old 80 series, ever reliable but always slow, really scared me this trip. As most would know there are some quite steep hills in Brisvegas. We had to stop half way up one of these in traffic with the camper on. When I went to take off I gave it some while riding the clutch. I ended up with the clutch out and foot flat to the floor and the big girl only JUST made its way forward. I was really afraid it would either spit the clutch, or stall and have us roll back into the car behind us. The cruiser was loaded and the camper weighs in at about 1200kg. Should it be this bad with what would seem a modest tow weight? She's only just cracked 240000kms on this trip and has always been serviced and well maintained. Its got me thinking of buying a petrol model, thought the fuel consumption scares me. I know the whole turbo it argument has been killed to death already. Not sure i want to spend that much on an older vehicle. Has anyone else's non turbo cruiser scared them like this?

I'll sell you a well used Petrol Nissan. ;D
I have sopped up the coolant in the footwell now so it's almost showroom condition

Nissan? I never said I would stoop that low ;D Speaking of coolant, I just had my fair share of it spraying everything under the car when the water pump decided to poo itself. All sorted now though.

Mine's auto so don't have that issue. If you get in that situation again just pop it into low until you clear the hill.

Haha, that would have been funny with about a kilometer long line of traffic behind me.

Just put the turbo on, its only just run in.

Could always fit a lexus bent 8 with a huffer on it or LSI ... most likey be half the cost of rebuild / replacement of the donk or the rig and pull like a train .

better than cooking the clutch :P
-
It needs a new pressure plate / clutch assembly and will be as good as new.
Sorry I misread - I thought the clutch was slipping the whole way.
My bad.
Just get a petrol one and be done with it. Even if you turbo it you still have an ancient old diesel returning figures not much better than the petrol version at 1/2 the speed.
There are plenty out there that will pay good money for an 80 and that would be more than enough to get into a late model GXL 100series petrol. Just dont allow the front wheels to pogo up step ups so they suddenly bite and break the front diff.
We had the 4500 petrol 100 series and towed our off road race buggy and gear all over the east coast and passed anyone in our way.
Ahh petrol power :D
-

... and a turbo. ;D
-
BTW our 100 series petrol manual got 16 on the highway and 18 around town. Thats in Tassie which is pretty hilly.
Stay close to std in tyre size otherwise they use a lot more fuel.
Seriously, whats the diesel average? I doubt it would be much less than 15 around town. And when your towing just close you eyes at the bumper and grin on the open road. And your on the open road FAR more than at the bowser so the giggle ratio is great and you get to do this;

My 1991 80 series 4L carby >:D is still going strong and as reliable as ever.
Fuel consumption in 80 series petrol usage is only 1/3 more than diesels but parts and servicing is a whole lot cheaper.
-
Putting a turbo and exhaust in my 1HZ cas completely transformed my Cruza. Chalk and cheese now with power. I have quite a few accessories on mine and a roofrack so my fuel figures arn't as good as most but we're 13lt per 100 as a daily driver now 14 lt after the turbo and exhaust. I am sure I could decrease my figures down from 14 but when you have the power you end up putting your foot down to use it.
-
...but when you have the power you end up putting your foot down to use it.
I'd agree with that.. specially today in the wet ;D ;D ;D
-
I understand what people are saying about swapping to a petrol, but if you know the history and it’s got the accessories you need and apart from this episode it’s reliable, then maybe fitting a turbo and maybe having the pump reconditioned might be all you need.
I drive 100 series 1HZ and I was under the impression fitting turbo’s to these can cause reliability problems, but I thought the 80 series handled the turbo better due to some slightly stronger engine parts.

That was my next thought. Wouldn't want to put it through that too many times.
Could always fit a lexus bent 8 with a huffer on it or LSI ... most likey be half the cost of rebuild / replacement of the donk or the rig and pull like a train .
Would love that option too, bar the extra fuel and rego. There was an absolutely mint, 1lady owner v8 100 series on car sales for $14000.

No clutch slipping....yet. And yes, my diesel uses around 13-14L around town and on the last trip towing the camper down south, I was high 17's to mid 18's with standard size tires and staying around 95km/hr.

I would love to turbo as I've driven a 105 that my BIL just bought with an aftermarket turbo on it and you can definitely tell the difference, but for where I'm at right now it will be a case of having to sell to fund an upgrade vehicle.
Beachman, it does have a lot of accessories on it that I like, but not big things like lockers or winches that cost a lot. I'm not sure that the 80series 1hz's are stronger than the 100series and I guess I would always have that reliability bug in the back of my mind.
And Bird, don't think the missus would let me mortgage the house to drop one a them babies in the rig.
If I could talk down the price on an unmolested, low kays unit like this, I reckon I could be swayed. I do love the 80's. http://www.carsales.mobi/cars/details/1993-Toyota-Landcruiser-GXL-FZJ80R/SSE-AD-3331752?DistanceFromMePostcode=4812 (http://www.carsales.mobi/cars/details/1993-Toyota-Landcruiser-GXL-FZJ80R/SSE-AD-3331752?DistanceFromMePostcode=4812)

Shows how much attention I've been paying. I thought yours was a diesel for some reason. Have to go back and look at your thread again :D

Be nice if petrol was cheaper tbough

Well thanks for that Swannie. Just read Franks entire thread instead of getting to bed. Great work, you wouldn't want to swap for a well looked after diesel 80 with slightly better fuel economy by any chance? ;D
-
Now I did see a Toyota Tundra parked in Broken Hill last week with a 5.7 Litre badge on it...? (main drag was a bit busy so I parked the Suzy underneath it)
Which reminds me I won't be honouring our shameful defeat at Gallipoli anymore but rather celebarating the centenary of the great victory over the Turks at White Rocks-

Was this where the legend of Mr Whippy was born?

What plugs do you run swannie?
I havnt changed mine in 6 years...we'll I've never changed them and seen some around that claim better economy ect.
Can't think of much else I can do to improve the economy aside from dynoing it, not that it's terrible but it could always be better

Mate I'm just running the standard ngk ones. I'm really happy with the economy but I've always driven big v8's that are a lot worse than Frankie. I'm at the crossroads now though with him. Do I really set him up and keep him for the next 5-10!or do I look at something more modern and invest the $$$ in that.

hard decision... buy something newer and more comfortable, and better tax write off and last another 20..?
or keep what you have and have already spent a bit on - but you now have a buyer for Frank too ;D
-
One thing I don't mind paying a bit extra for fuel if I go the petrol is the fact that I won't have a loan for the vehicle. What I would be forking out in repayments if I went to a newer turbo diesel fourby, or turbo kit for my 80 (I'd have to borrow) I can spend on fuel and still be ahead I suppose.
So Swannie, maaaate. Swaggers discount. How much we talkin' ;D

Smart thinking. Amazes me when you see people borrowing for a new truck to save $$ in fuel.
-
I don't plan selling my 80 for a long while, would cost 10,000 plus to get anything I'd consider better and quite frankly I love driving it and it's comfortable to boot.
I'd rather spend money overhauling it when it need it than replacing it personal
-

....yeah, but the new ones don't seem all that economical to me.....especially when they're being worked....

That's exactly my thinking. Once you own the car, you can basically put away $100-150 a week (what you would spend on new car repayments) to spend on fix ups and upgrades to the 80.

There's a company in the states that sell quad cam 32 valve aluminium crate motors bio diesel with wiring harness and computer for an 80 for 10 gees if I had it spare I'd do it.
It's like a lexus v8 but bio diesel

yea but then you need to find enough bio to run it on.. its hard to get old cookin oil now that companies buy it off the shops.
-
Still runs on regular diesel like any other bio diesel, just means it can run on almost anything

Then add intercooler, +fitting (probably wouldn't trust myself on something that can effect the reliability of my car so much), + injectors and pump upgrade, + exhaust system, + dyno tune + guages to monitor temps, + potential cooling system upgrage, etc. I could end up at $7000-8000 to do it properly to a point where I'm confident in it. To swap to a clean, low kay petrol 80, I may even come out ahead with cash. Then I could spend $7000ish on fuel. Hard decision though.

That would be cool, but once again, I'd have to borrow to fund it. No problem getting fish and chip oil up here though. I got onto a supplier for my old man. He gets more oil than he can use for free and its so clean he doesn't have to filter it before it goes in the tank. He hasn't paid for fuel in his hilux for a year and a half now.

A video clip of the exhaust note?

I've put a 2.5 inch exhaust on mine and it gos alot better, little bit louder than I'd prefer but not rediculous

Grafy, I'm a petrol 80 advocate, however one thing you really need to consider is, if you go down the track of selling yours and purchase a petrol 80 or any other 4wd regardless of fuel type of that era (1990-1997) more often than not you will have to sink a few bucks into it to fix current problems or any surprises after purchase that you didn't pick up in inspection. If you happen to find a 4wd where you can drive away with nothing more to spend, I suspect that you'll be paying a bit more of a premium.
So I'm thinking regardless which way you choose to go, you may well be paying more than you would really like.

I get a fair amount of good information on cruisers here - http://www.lcool.org/forum/ (http://www.lcool.org/forum/)
Not long ago I very nearly offloaded the petrol Prado for a petrol 100 series, but have stuck where I am for now.
You will pay more for a diesel, so the old argument around more fuel vs more expensive vehicle is rarely considered I believe.
I predict you will enjoy the power and response of a petrol cruiser and forget the fact your fuel consumption has increased!
-
My opinion based on my experience.
Bought the 80 series about 8 years ago with 260k on the clock. Put the turbo on at 330k, cost about 4k including a 2.5" exhaust. Now nudging 400k and not a problem. We get 12 l/100km not towing, 16 l/100kn towing the KK. Most of the work it does is towing. Have spoken to my mechanic lots about updating, but he says if you know the service history and maintain it well, it is not worth updating. I have also spent a great deal of time and a little money in personalising (drawers, fridge slide, winch, cameras, electric brakes, dual batteries, lift kit, air bags, driving lights, pack rack). All these extras make it an expensive exercise to upgrade and replace all the extras.
If you have a sound unit to start with, I believe it is worth spending the money to fix rather than replace.
-

Agree, I'd be happy to spend 20k on mine(If I had the coin) tomorrow.
It owes me 41k, including a purchase price of $21,000.00, 10 years ago, this doesn't include fuel.
My 1991 80 Series (http://www.hairfysh.com/91-80-series-lc)
Somethings fail, you've got control over them. Maintain it & look after it, it will look after you.
