Title: what works for me - medical edition
Post by: paceman on January 30, 2015, 09:02:27 AM
i am always looking for new, effective ways to get over sickness and to prevent it from occurring....

natural being the more preferred, but all welcome....

just thought i would start a list of ailments and remedies that work for me and will hopefully work for others...

sore throat - gargling half a teaspoon of cayenne pepper, mixed with a glass of luke warm water once every couple of hours...  stings a bit, but kills the bacteria causing the pain....

coughing - two teaspoons of manuka honey (UMF 15+ or better).  our boys suffer from coughs a bit in winter and this is the best thing i have found that stops a cough dead in it's tracks.  10 minutes after taking, their coughs have completed stopped for at least 6 to 8 hours... makes for restful sleep... :)  make sure you get the UMF version of the manuka honey, not the Active version...

nasal congestion - rubbing white tiger balm (NOT the red... ) on the chest and forehead/temples.  heats up a bit when you first put it on the forehead and temples, but settles down pretty quick.  works better than vicks for me...  i use the vicks for rubbing on the bottom of my feet and then putting socks on before bed...

mucus buildup - bisolven (from the chemist) is the best thing if have used for budging stubborn mucus buildup...  this normally happens for me after the nasal congestion...

overall immune system help - i have been taken olive leaf capsules for a while now, and believe it has helped with reducing the severity of sickness and also with reducing cholesterol levels...  and a cup of green tea (mixed with red gum honey, because normal green tea tastes like feet) every morning also seems to help...

hope this helps somebody... :)  of course, YMMV... and consult your GP, if not sure... :)

Work with 28 children  ;D You very quickly build up an epic immune system from all their bugs. Been a teacher for 7 years now and only been genuinely sick for a couple of days in a row once.

Retirement.

Haven't had a cold, migraine, or been sick in the last 5 years.  Even the tinnitus is getting better.

Works for me.

cheers

SJ you're nearly right. 1/3 cup of green ginger wine, 1/3 of water, microwave til hot then fill it with rum. That will cure a lot of problems. Oh, you have to drink it.

Back in the mid eighties I worked in ED at Balmain Hospital - I think they were having their 100th anniversary at the time.
The Charge Nurse in ED had a collection of old home remedy books and I showed some interest so she used to let me flick through them when it was quiet.
I would reckon every recipe for cough medicine I read (and I read hundreds) began "Take half a bottle of whisky....."
Ever since then I have used this priceless advice when I get a cough.

Growing up us kids would get a teaspoon of rum / scotch or brandy  to sip on a few times a day  for coughs / sore throats or colds ...  Any wonder I cant stand the dark spirits now, Vodka on the other hand does the job nowadays ..

A single malt cures all my woes.  100% natural.  100% organic.  Can't ask for anything better.

Hangover prevention;

Ordinary drinking session: plenty of water before bed.
Big session: plenty of water and a multi vitamin before bed.
Massive session: double dose of electrolyte tablets in the water and a multi before bed.
Epic session: it is now morning and there's no point going to bed so keep powering on.

Sore lower back (mild arthritis)
Cut red meat right back like 99% back, replaced with fish & white meat (chicken)
Cut anything with refined wheat right back
These food types actually feed inflammation so anyone with back problems related to inflammation like arthritis can cut back on these and might find they need fewer meds or none at all.
I also boosted intake of foods that have natural anti inflammatory like curries

really helped
PS my blood type is type A and sometimes eating foods that is best for your blood type also helps

Two major back operations and serious arthritis but I would never cut back my red meat by 99%  ;D ;D ;D

My wife sometimes suffers headaches, mainly around the time I wanna... you know.  >:D

I find  even just the promise of a new dress or outfit and bingo, headache gone.
